We stayed up late every night talking about the old days, politics, food, and a lot of heady stuff... She has been a leftist as far back as I remember and that hasn't changed... Still "commie mommie" after all these years... We talked alot about the 1920s and 1930s... Very cool... She took me out to lunch one day at this very funky joint that has the best groper sandwiches (even if they don't actually use real groper) and then to dinner where I had grilled romaine lettuce with a balsamic vinegar sauce, feta cheese and onions... Very yummy... Met most of the folks who are in my mom's life now and they were all great people... At 93 she still is a very interesting person who attracts some pretty interesting characters... Tired... I hate flying... Unless I'm the pilot... B~ |

My dad was a died-in-the-wool Republican, as is my poor brother to this very day... And on the other side of the divide was my mom and me... My mom is very outspoken... Her father was a strong "union" guy who because of the union kept his job during the Great Depression while lots of folks lost theirs... My mom told me a story about my grandfather that was very revealing... One day she and her father were walking down a street in downtown Detroit, where she grew up... There was a man asking for spare change and my grandfather told her, "Don't give him anything... It will just encourage him to beg"... Then my mom said, "That seemed strange because other than that one occasion her father would all but give his shirt off his back to anyone in need..."??? Anyway, I had a great time... I slept 9 hours plus last night after 4 days of lousy sleep... My mom has strange bedtime habits... First, she plays her TV all night long and in a small condo, even with the door closed, I could hear it thru the earplugs I bought after the 1st night... Second, she wakes up every night between 2 and 3 am and makes a half a cup of coffee, drinks it, and then sleeps to 8 or 9??? B;~) |

My father-in-law is within an easy half hour drive, so we get to see him a lot more often. 95, and still going pretty strong, funny as all getout sometimes. On the one hand he's an old gent, without a mean bone in him. But on the tother hand, he's always been staunch repub, and now he really doesn't have much perspective except from mailings from the teapublican "patriots". Fortunately he doesn't major in railing on that, but sometimes he has to let us know that it bothers him that his grandkids are voting "socialist". |

When my dad was dieing (not dying) my mom was concerned about a CD, as in Certificate of Deposit and not compact disc, that he had moved a couple months earlier from one bank to another... Dad was pretty much out of it and she kept asking him over and over which bank he have moved it to... I think his last words to her were, "Middleburg Bank"... Typical Republican thing... Never mind... B;~) |

Let's me just say that my dad passed away at age 88... "Middleburg Bank" is a locally owned bank in Loudoun County, Va. and a couple mont;s before my dad died, dyed, ahhhh, passed away he had taken money out of another bank and put it in the "Middleburg Bank" without my mom knowing it and she needed to know it... That's why she harassed my poor father as he was, ahhhhh, trying to pass away into coughing up the information... B~ |
