Subject: BS: UPSPAW report - 4 April 2013
From: katlaughing
Date: 04 Apr 13 - 10:52 PM

Just talked to Karen. Spaw is having a rough time, but they will be going home after her shift is over. He doesn't have the falling off hair nor the curly hair. Nausea, yes. Karen is not looking forward doing it all over again the week of the 32th. I hope it clears in time for them for a christmas.

UPSPAW!!!!!

Hey! Spaw, I need you to be healthy, you hear me? I'm sick and tired of you being sick and tired.

Or something like that. Be good. Be well. Be the best that you can be.

Quite major, actually.

Our beloved and ribald Catspaw 49 is nearly a master at focusing on the positive and staying in the moment. Cracking jokes and sounding crude and crass. Amazing sense of satire and irony. Incredibly entertaining with his sometimes shocking humor.

Remember, however, the awesome person that is apparent behind the persona.

Up Spaw.

Yo, SPAW! Definitely NOT up to your high calibre but...

A Russian couple walks down a street in Moscow when the man feels a drop hit his nose.
"I think it's raining," he says to his wife.
"No, that feels like snow to me, dear," she replies.
Just then, a minor communist party official walks towards them.
"Let's not fight about it," the man says. "Let's ask Comrade Rudolph whether it's officially raining or snowing."
"It's raining, of course" Comrade Rudolph says and walks on.
But the woman insists, "I know that felt like snow."
To which the man quietly says, "Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear."

Hat... coat...

Pat has lived his life out loud and a lot of it here at Mudcat while he was recovering from something. So this is UPSPAW Redux. Thanks for letting us know - not everyone wants their medical information out here, but Spaw is exceptional - and I suspect people learn a lot from these threads.

Get over the nausea soon, buddy. And pay attention to Michelle - she has information that can help.

Friends: While the Doctors work their magic, you might want to make an adjustment to your diet.

Respectfully suggest you investigate kale, custard apple(guanabana), pomegranate, broccoli..

Wishing you Health & Recovery...bob

Hey Spaw,

Thinking of you tonight. If you've had Zofran and didn't find any relief, I was given Compazine and Fenagren to use when the Zofran didn't work (but it always did work and I never needed the other meds...but thought maybe it would be something to keep in mind if you are still feeling icky....worth asking about anyway).

Stay strong.

Love you.

I immediately thought "ass" but then I realized, in Spaws case, there are a number of blanks.

My apologies........I guess we need an update here but I'm at a loss for what to say exactly. This would be easier if I had any idea what the hell was happening but I don't so let me tell you what I know.

The disease is Myeloplastic Dysplasia Syndrome. I was having problems (more than normal) breathing. Problem was anemia, a lack of red blood cells to carry O2 to the lungs. After much diagnosis this was what they found. I was getting transfusions and I would feel great for a short while but you can't go that route all the time.

There is no cure for this disease and the end game plays badly with a form of leukemia that doesn't treat well. The drugs they do use to treat both is 1) Aranesp- A weekly shot which kickstarts the bone marrow and 2) Vidaza- A chemo treatment involving stomach shots (3) for one week per month.

We stated the Aranesp a few months back but it did not build the hemoglobin but had at least sort of maintained to the point where transfusions were 6-8 weeeks apart. At that point we stated Vidaza which kills off the bad to help the good or some other such nonsensical sounding crap. By the end of the first week I couldn't breathe and was transfused again.....and again only 4 days later.   At this point my Hemoglobin should be through the roof but I am still having a hard time breathing and now at a Hemoglobin level which before had been acceptable. I also have CHF of course which makes the transfusion process delicate without building up fluid in the body or scar tissue on my lungs.

Well, to hell with all that.....bottom line is I don't know why this is happening although it started gettin worse with the vidaza. I will be at the Zangmeister Center tomorrow foran Aranesp shot and will see if we can find out what the hell is happening. When I first asked and then read about side effects it was about mild nausea (yeah, but very mild), a rash/irritation athe each of the 15 injection sites (really sucks bad but liveable). Why I am having the trouble with breathing at this level and why my platelets are so super low......no real answers yet.

I love you all and I apologize to each of you for this lack of updates but I really didn't know what to say short of the above and that's still a developing story. I will do better in the future. Kat has been trying to get more info out of me but trying to explain this crap is just ridiculous. Hell, I got it and it doesn't make sense to me. I know it ends badly but that bothers me less than the daily lack of info and also BREATH!!!!

Now get back to doing whatever to hell it is you should be doing and I will keep trying to kick Sinsull's ass in Words with Friends. Also, may I suggest you buy or find and listen to an album by Jewel called,"Lullabye." Karen bought it while I was in the hospital this weekend and it is terrific. Her voice has always been sort of mesmerizing to me and the country influence comes through on this album. Beautiful stuff.

If you feel the need to worry, here's my best suggestion. Take 15 or 20 minutes within the next few days an worry like a motherfucker! Worry about whatever strikes you and feel free to worry like a double motherfucker about me. Then when the 15 minutes ends, go do something that matters a damn. Or do something that doesn't matter at all. But stop the damn worrying! Completely pointless and I respect all of you enough to know you are NOT pointless people.

You too Janie......

Love y'all

I'll take that under advisement.

As for my shift, I'll be in late as I didn't rise til 6AM and I am only on my second cup of tea. I can't worry well for at least two more cups.

Robiin Roberts is much younger than I am which makes a difference and there are some variants within the disease which make the transplant a non worker for me. It has not progessed to leukemia yet but the treating drugs are the same for each.

Feeling moderately better today and hoping that keeeps up this week.

Hey Spaw, pushing out the positive vibes and spirit up lifts for you. Last night I decided to run a little Wiccan type home grown event for you. So I put Art Rosenbaum on the music machine, stripped off all my clothes and danced wildly in a circle around my banjo .... guess you must be feeling a bit better now huh? Me, I'm still searching a way to explain it to the lady from over the way who came over to borrow some flour ... she peeked in the window. Might cop a temporary insanity plea.

Hang tough and get well !

Spaw, you're about the only human being who makes succinct sense around here.
When you are done with the medicinal poison, give me a call on your phone:

Here is a dity by Cole Porter I made just for you.

When you call someone up
You have no right to privacy
for what you say
The constitution mentions secure books and papers
Not a word of privacy
If we all knew everything
about everyone's secrets
we would realize the big secret
is simpler than we thought.
Everyone's ripping each other off

CIA do it , NSA do it, Even kids at DOJ do it
Lets do it
Let's hack 'their' phones

Banks do it, Cranks do it, Even Facebook billionaires do it
Let's do it
Let's hack 'their' phones

Spies do it FBI do it . Even Murdoch,s who tell lies do it
Lets do it, lets hack 'their' phones.

With love,
Don the Hackman

Love your philosophy on worrying. I teach people about 'fret energy'; if you're worrying about something you can't do a damn thing about, you're wasting energy you could be using on something else. So, set aside some time to cry, pity, roll around and pound grass, then get to work. And sometimes the work is sitting and accepting.

Thinking about you and your family, sending prayers and hugs for the hard times, high-fives for the good ones.

Dani

PS: know any good online bananagrams? THAT I could kick your ass at!

Well, hell. I had commissioned the Royal Mortar Forkers to create a statue worthy of the Mississippi Kingdom to commemorate what Spawzer has meant to the people and the throne of said Kingdom.
They have worked tirelessly, which is quite difficult to do. Have you ever tried to push a wheelbarrow full of mortar without any tires on it? Try it, by gawd, then maybe you'll be more appreciative of their tireless efforts. By gawd. it's inconsiderate people like you that have gotten the world in the pitiful shape it's in today!
You should be ashamed of yourselves and take a lesson from people like Mr. Joe Offer (who, incidentally is no Igmo!) who are kind, considerate and very smart. You could learn a thing or two from him and his ilk! A fine example is Joe Offer, by dang!
In fact, igannies, someone should erect a statue of him as the shining example of positive humanity that he is. Think of it... your children's children will look upon such a statue and say in whispered tones. "Oh. to have lived on this earth when men like Joe Offer roamed about".
By dangnation, somebody ought to build it!

Oh, yeah, Spawzer, (harumph, ahem) yes. The RMFs built a four hole brick shithouse and copied Spaw's Mudcat postings concerning the King and the Kingdom all over the walls. Thousands have line up to take a dump in his honor.

It was the least the Ethereal Kingdom could do for such a supporter of all things Mississippi as Mr. Spaw!

Get well or at least, get better, buddy!
Me and Joe Offer think you should!

He's on Facebook promoting the use of plungers as beer can holders at the beach.
Some things never change.

LOL.....They aren't going well yet..............the plungers, not the chemo.......The chemo is a pain in the belly.

Things are showing positive results though. My numbers are doing better, platelets have tripled and are close to normal. So it seems better and I feel better. Breathing is improved too.   The problem is the treatments are okay as they are given, a bit painful, but okay. By the end of the week my stomach begins to hurt pretty badly as though I have pulled muscles and am being stabbed by knives. Cold and Tylenol help but it takes a 4-6 days before I am even close to normal and even today I still hurt some. But it is two weeks before I have to do it again.....which sucks.

I've had to watch sodium closely and the plus side is I have less edema problems than I've ever had since the CHF began and my weight is down as well. The balancing of multiple problems is getting better and we learn as we go. Tomorrow is blood tests and Aronesp shot so we'll see the results of this last treatment and also in next week's testing.

Sorry if I haven't been more forthcoming or whatever but the story is the same and I really don't have much news. anyone need a bottle/can holder made from a toilet plunger?

I was going to bitch about the gout in my left toe but now it seems silly to complain.
I'll take a plunger if it has duel uses - good for stopped up toilets as well as creating them with too much beer?

Nice of you to grace us with your presence, as always. Even tho much hasn't changed, as you said, just the fact that you are able to sit up and take nourishment, let alone continuing to improve (HURRAH!) is worth an update to all those that care.

Now, turn the plunger upside down and

TWO toilet plungers.. with handles cut off a bit shorter... make a handy gadget to sit on at the beach. short handles sink into the sand and the plunger cups provide suction to keep you from toppling over if you've had too much beer.

It's ok... no need to thank me....
