What does it mean? I’m looking for this sort of explanation: English take on analysing American lyrics

Or rather, I can only come up with that sort of explanation: the coal wagon was invented before what we now know as the wheel, and the wheels they did have were square, so of course, they wouldn’t roll (buddy).
