Subject: RE: Lyr Req: shortenin' bread From: Freddie Fox Date: 06 Nov 99 - 07:53 PM This is completely irrelevant, but my twins sing, to the same tune; Two little monkeys jumping on the bed, One fell off and bumped his head, Mummy called the doctor, the doctor said, 'No more monkeys jumping on the bed'. I can't work out where they got that from, but is that cute or what?!!! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: shortenin' bread From: Azizi Date: 01 May 05 - 07:18 AM Greetings! The Mudcat thread Shortnin Bread Origins contains multiple versions of that song, including one that I adapted in 1998 or so for contemporary children's groups. Underneath this thread's title there is a listing of other Mudcat threads on Shortnin' Bread. However, I prefer the thread that I hyperlinked because in additin to providing examples of Shortnin' Bread, 'Catters and Guests discuss the history & meaning of that song and some of its lyrics {for example 'the lid' probably means the 'cover' of the pot}. Enjoy! Ms. Azizi Powell |

By the way I hope you are singing this a la Skillet Lickers and not the dirge that I always heard as a kid sung by Paul Robeson. Took me years to find out that this was a good up tempo dance tune.
