If you do social good or welfare you qualify for a 501 C4 tax free status. Just like Mudcat has tax free status, you too can submit you request to the IRS. Your members are permitted to be annonymous.

Since the law says you must be primarily dedicated to social welfare make sure 51% of your activities are for the the social welfare of others.

While this provision was made possible by the Citizens United decision to collect and spend money on anti Obama ads and money for Corporate Candidates, we should use it for social good and welfare just as it says.

What is the social good and welfare you provide to others?

PS    501 + C4 = ?

It's a tricky business, trying to figure out what qualifies as a 501 (c) organization.

I belong to a community organizing group that does advocacy work. We have to be careful not to promote any individual candidate or party, although we can promote issues and we can promote one side or the other of an election initiative (like proposition 13 or the like). The "Tea Party" groups that the IRS targeted were quite obviously close to crossing the line, but I suppose it might have been better if the IRS had also targeted some liberal organizations.

I think the Catholic church crossed the line this election season with those nasty letters from an unnamed cardinal..who has been very quiet since the new pope and/or ever widening investigations into abuse coverups etc...

There is a VERY clear difference between a:

Not For Profit

OR

Non-Profit

In the USA IRS tax code.

Sincerely,

Gargoyle

Consult your local USA state tax code.... one of the distinct differences is "payment" to members....or the governing board....and employment.

People like Joe who get down and dirty to grease the gears of a system with all its inequities, ambiguities, broken parts, (some on purpose) and service an organization's tax status needs deserve great respect.
Like Lawrence O'Donell it takes special skills and experience to tread those waters.

Looking at the IRS and how it has effected the psyche of America, I see how it was presented to citizens and how it took an IRS to put away gangsters like Al Capone. This would include how tips from certain wealthy class leaders including the church could bring down perceived enemies of their personal interests. The IRS uses very specific celebrities to celebrate their authority. People like Romney settle for pennies on the dollar almost annonymously.

Therfore it seems obvious to me that the IRS has always been a political force to reckon with in some way or another.

Now look at the people who want to starve and shrink government down to a withered shell small enough to drown in a bathtub, who are now pointing out how they may have been stereotyped for investigations of their IRS tax excemption requests. It almosts seems as if those claiming victimhood are the most clever of all.

I know I could not determine a law that demanded proof about what Percentage of one's activities are for social good and what percentage are self serving politically motivated endeavors.
Of course the spirit of the law was to allow unlimited money from secret people to be used for their own political take over using the number of dollars over the number of real people.
The letter of the law is therfore a complete mess after trying to word it in a more palatable way, or at least in a way not so overtly anti democratic / pro corporate.

But this is exactly what the Citizens United case invented by the double Bush Court has brought us.
