Subject: BS: What do you collect ??
From: Claire M
Date: 01 Jun 13 - 02:31 PM

Hiya,

I've known & do know quite a few collectors of various things & was wondering what you collect.

1. Anything to do with Steeleye Span. It's getting increasingly difficult now, but a woman I see as an adopted relative is making me a bag with one of their logos on as an early bday present.

2. Jewellery. Usually copper, but I also like wood, brass or fused glass. I can't wear anything too heavy, & don't like the idea of wearing jewellery you can't take off.

3.Fantasy novels. I love folklore – charm making, sacred jewellery etc. I've a sign on my "flat's" door saying
"Leonaidh mi a h-uile duine,
Cha leoin duine mi.

That means "Wound can I every man, wound can no man me"

I went thru Betty Ford about 15 years ago but before that:

***old toasters (had dozens on 'um)...

***old car parts (had thousands of them)...

***old doilies and drawn-work (had hundreds of 'um)...

When we moved I sold 90% of my collection at an auction, which included hundred and hundreds of other things I had collected during my addiction...

If you were to look at my office you'd think that I had never completed Betty Ford but this ain't nuthin'...

Lumps. Over the years I've collected lots and lots of lumps. Lumps on my head, lumps on my face, lumps in my pants. I will freely share them with anyone interested.

I also collect bills. I've tried to collect US dollars, but instead I collect bills from places like the electric company, credit cards, and others. These I will also freely share.

I also collect rocks. Fools gold from California, a stone from Daniel Boone's grave, one from Hadrian's wall, a chunk of marble from the old PO where my office used to be. The story is too long and few people would be interested in hearing it.

Rubber squid, flamingoes seem to follow me home, but I don't actively collect them, printing and typographical stuff.

Oh, and then there's the books. Amazing how there's room for anything else, considering the books.

I've got rocks, too -- some of them from significant (to me) places. And fossils (I mean, other than Curmudgeon...) and shells and skulls and an accumulation of wild turkey feathers.

Guitars, generally, and guitar stuff. Mandolins, banjos, basses, ukuleles. Gold Tone products, 4 banjos and a Weissenborn. It just kind of happened. Other stringed instruments.

Used to collect fishing lures but after discovering that a select few were the most productive I kind of got stalled. However, sometimes I can't resist...hook, line, and sinker...sucked in.

Major weakness for pocket knives.

Peace, Mooh.

Well, perhaps I should admit that I've cataloged 1,593 books from my office. This does not count my wife's rather extensive collection or "our" collection.

I guess you could say I collect knowledge.

Oh, and that doesn't include the LPs, cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, and CDs and DVDs.

A 'collection' means something basically organized and documented. Then there is an 'accumulation'.

I accumulate samples of odd woods for all over the world.... and folk music books and records/CDs... and I used to accumulate beer cans & bottles, but as some know, I've been getting rid of the originals and accumulating digital photos of them

Hiya,

I got rocks in my bed!

I now have said bag. It is stunning. I am now a proper grown-up woman. The logo (which means nothing to my flatmates) is silver & covered with leaves. When people see anything to do with Steeleye, they instantly think it's mine.

I've got so many books I've started getting ones I want in pdf cos I'm not good with £££ & half the time I can never get them– I only read books once, then pass them on. No non-fiction cos it bores me.

Oh, forgot, I'm a huge fan of Retro programmes, started off by Life On Mars.

"it bores me"

Different strokes...

I never buy any book but history--I find it endlessly fascinating, and there are always new (or old) corners to poke into).    Added to which, it often has a direct effect on current circumstances--an obvious case being the 2nd Amendment.    An awful lot of people are abysmally ignorant of history, which does not stop them from spectacularly wrongheaded ideas---which they in fact act on.   And, more's the pity, they can vote.

And I find fiction pointless--except the classics, which I still--- eventually (who knows when)-- intend to get to.

But of course that all has to coexist with what I collect:    songs, of all kinds, to memorize and sing.

I sort of started with a small bit of "nothing" and have now accumulated an enormous amount of the same. "I started with nothing and have most of it left" is the traditional explanation, but sort of understates things.

It's difficult to relate to "collecting" in any usual sense but I have a fairly significant accumulation of "I might do something with that someday" things. My assemblage of "I did this with that" items is much smaller and considerably more selective, although it does include some quite notable pieces.

I have found some difficulty with passing my interests on to my own future generations, since most of my "did with" things elicit nothing but "only old people do that" responses when I try to display or demonstrate any of them.

But I don't see much reason to change, and plan to leave them my notes for when they get old enough.

John

I don't COLLECT anything.

I tend to ACCUMULATE guitars, science fiction and fantasy books, folk/old country/Americana CDs (having graduated from vinyl, then cassettes, both of which I still have many of), and DVDs, mostly of a sex-and-violence sort.

Songs, rocks, seed-pods, small decorated boxes, dodos, tiny animal and bird skulls, small used nests, feathers, funny old pictures of performers, little felt animals and birds from Sandra, pictures of angels pushing children off cliffs or bridges -- yes they are! I'm sure of it.
Joy -- yes! I like to collect that too.

Hats and Maps. I had more of the former but was forced into a cull by a house move. Still have a dozen or more though, all used quite often. A drawer full of the latter. I tend to get a 1:25000 or 1:50000 of any area I have walked in along with city maps of places I visit.

I used to collect pre-1960 ski manuals—if the ski boots in the pictures had laces instead of buckles, I was interested. Eventually I bought up all the affordable used ski books in Vancouver (BC) and started in on "antiquarian" quality books. After getting a few of those at fifty to a hundred bucks a pop, I came to my senses. I still look for old ski books, but they're not around anymore. The last one I found was five years ago in Perdue, Saskatchewan, in a store set up in the old Royal Bank building by a dealer from New Brunswick who had moved his entire stock halfway across the country.

My favorite is "Invitation To Skiing" by Eislin and Spectorsky (1947). My oldest is "How To Ski And How Not To" by Vivian Caulfield (1923). Ski technique changed dramatically after the world saw Stein Erikson in action at the 1952 Olympics. The first author to teach the new technique (counter-rotation) was Canadian Ernie McCulloch in "Learn To Ski" (1955). Nowadays, with "shaped" skis, technique is not required at all.

I generally travel lightly, and acquire few things that I don't use frequently.

I have acquired a few things, and often keep a few of them, in case they come in handy (mostly parts of items stored in my basement workshop, where I don't see 'em every day). Then I go though a "big" downsizing, realizing that I will never have a use for these things. I then get rid of alot of "the non-essential stuff" hanging around. I guess that is kinda like "collecting" - but, not likely in the sense of the OP.

Outside of that, I don't collect much, except for a few interesting butane cigarette lighters (the ones that have neat functions beyond being a lighter). But,oddly, I don't use them to light tobacco products. I use a BBQ lighter to light up an occasional cigar, on a warm day when I am "wastin away in margaritaville".

If you'd like to pay us a visit we'd love to put you up and let you collect critter skuls. Western Victoria in Australia in the middle of nowhere. Getting them out of the country would be tricky.    There are Dinosaurs down the road, buried in the swampland. Dragons are a distinct possibility in our lava caves and tunnels.
Come and see us and we'll swap stories.
