The Tardis is not all it's cracked up to be.

In mine the transport controls are annoyingly erratic, so you never know where you're going to end up - and lot's of times you don't even know where you're starting out from.

And all those interior rooms do nothing but collect dust bunnies - some of which are disturbingly aggressive.

A complete aside, but the BBC website told us that Steven Moffat is the 'runner', which was the first time I'd discovered American TV has decided to use the same name for both the top job and the lowest job in the industry. Why on earth (or Gallifrey) should anyone do that?

"Maybe it's because I'm American but I've never figured out why the show was popular and lasted so long."

Don't worry, Wesley, I'm British and I don't understand it either!

My best guess is that, like most 'TV SciFi', it's appeal has nothing to do with 'real' speculative literature. For that, the show's plots would have to be informed by real science, be thoroughly thought through and make some sort of sense (rather than the half-baked jumble of of silly notions derived from 'pop science' that they usually are). Basically, 'Dr Who' is yet another soap opera and I suspect that its audience are more interested in the relationship between the eponymous 'Dr.' and his glamorous assistant than they are in any speculative content.

I can't say I've enjoyed the shows much since Matt Smith joined, but I don't think that's down to him, but that the overall standard has declined from some well thought out ideas to "the half-baked jumble of silly notions" you refer to. But I don't think it is necessarily the case these need to be correct scientifically, since some of the most interesting stuff is of quite a different nature. For example, in one of the Christopher Ecclestone episodes a dalek gives a one liner to the doctor: "You would have made a good dalek". That's simply brilliant, in my book, since it opens a whole train of thought on exactly how they differ, and whether it is in fact true. And that, for the thoughtful kind of person, reflects into their own lives about whether they as different from some other group as they assume they are. To me, that is (science) fiction at its best.

I can think of perhaps a dozen such points throughout the series (hmmm, I wonder what the plural of series is?), but I can't think of any since Smith joined.

Agree with Shimrod, I find Dr. Who to be very weak as sci fi, it's more of a soap opera slash romance with some scienceish ideas tagged on, though I do think it has seen better days.

On a point of order, and at the risk of being thought a pedant, the new incumbent will not be the new 'Who'. He or she will be the new 'The Doctor'.
The Doctor's name is 'The Doctor', not 'Doctor Who'.

Dr's Glam Asst ~~ We know that, but the pedantry has been overtaken by a sort of folklore; deliberately engineered by the originators of the series title, I should say.

My late wife Valerie spent a few days in hospital once, where there was a Chinese houseman called Dr Hu. Every time the call came over the tannoy for "Dr Hu", all the ladies in the ward would shout in chorus "And the Daleks".

but I've never figured out why the show was popular and lasted so long.

It hasn't. It had a (generally) good run from 1963 to 1989 when it was cruelly culled by a cynical BBC. I think anything that came afterwards is referred to by the faithful as Nu-Hu (New-Who) to differentiate from the original continuity & the mythos thereof in which we might still imagine what the world would have been like if Geoffrey Bayldon had taken up the mantle thus depriving the world of Catweazel. Nothing in Nu-Hu can compare with this, much less the Weirdlore Zeitgeist that gave us The Daemons in 1971 - though I must confess to hiding behind the sofa when the morris dancers came on.

Enjoyed the Sarah Jane Adventures though; back to basics with character & story development rather than bogging itself down with big meaningless concepts and mawkish overkill.

Here's my vintage CYBERMEN just to show I'm a real fan of the show.

To the critics - please remember that this was, and judging by the timing still is, aimed at the teen/younger adult audience. While I agree it is not traditional sci-fi I do not believe that is any reason to knock it. Doing so is akin to knocking music, no matter how good, because it is not folk. I can't see that happening, can you? :-)

If you think of more as loosely science connected fantasy, pretty much like Hitch-Hikers guide to the Galaxy, it begins to make more sense. Well, I suppose sense is too strong but I can't think of another at the moment!

As to being more interested in the romantic aspect, not guilty. My family and I find the token romantic intervals more of a distraction. Fortunately they are not too often or too obvious so I can live with that.

Cheers

Really, Dave? I thought him absolutely right in Jonathan Miller's The Beggar's Opera ~~ as good as Olivier in the Peter Brook film, tho the character quite differently conceived by the two of them. I have both on video & often play them back-to-back, to continued pleasure & enlightment.

My favourite 'sight gag' in the Matt Smith era was in "A Good Man Goes To War". Madame Vastra (the Silurian) and Jenny (her 'assistant') have overpowered two guards and one of the guards (picking up on the chemistry between the two) says "I don't know what she sees in her", at which Madame Vastra lashes out at the guard with her six-foot tongue.
Fortunately it will have been completely lost on the kids!

The writing in the current series has been so poor I'm not sure it matters. Especially Mark Gatiss, dreadful.

You're bang on the money there, Michael - best we take that as a very serious warning for a future Tory Dystopia that will make The Thatcher Years look like Heaven on Earth.

*

As far as I know it will be John Hurt. Hope this doesn't spoil your fun......

Seems John Hurt was a red herring - one theory has him as the missing Doctor Regeneration between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston. Read all about it here, but take some aspirin along:

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/05/23/doctor-who-john-hurt-50th-anniversary-show_n_3324473.html

*

For me the ideal Doctor would be multifaceted character actor David Threlfal - he could regenerate every month or so and still come out more convincing than that last two (I liked Eccleston, but would have preferred June Brown).

DtG I suppose it's unfair to disparage things other people enjoy. To be truthful it's mainly an annoyance at the lack of scifi on TV generally as well as the ubiquity of soap operas and romance!

Someone above mentioned Tom Baker, now there was a Doctor! Weird, powerful and not quite human despite the appearance of being human, far too Other for romance!

I just can't abide these pretty clean-shaven boy-men and the romantic dramas they've imposed upon us as though to appeal to the female audience - as a girl who actually likes science fiction I'd like to tell the Beeb: real girls like real scifi!

Seems somewhat daft to brand Dr. Who racist for only ever incarnating in white form. He's an *alien humanoid from another planet*. Maybe the people of Gallifrey simply don't have a lot of mellanin pigment? Maybe they never needed mellanin as a defence against sun-light, or maybe they've evolved not to need it? As a side thought, have any of the Doctors had even so much as a suntan? They always seem ubiquitously pale-skinned to me. As for referencing boo-boos from the seventies, give us a break, it was the *seventies* ffs, even crap like The B&W Minstrels were considered family entertainment!

I was under impression from the ending scene of last show that it would be John Hurt.

I just think the show is a laugh. But I am as inclined to sleep through it as sit on edge of my seat, depending upon many internal and external factors. Most of the fun is making disparaging commentary while watching it. Kind of like Mystery Science Theatre 2000.

If the new Doctor is woman, I'd like Sandra Millican to give it a whack.

The end of the last show was a bit contradictory, VT - Matt Smith said that he (the John Hurt Character) was everything the Doctor was not - Some sort of alter-ego. But, yes, the credits said he was the Doctor. I suspect it will pan out as the former unless the two 'halves' combine maybe? And a big yes to Eddie Izzard :-)
