Seems like my cookie's been eaten..... anyway, this is not exactly a lyric, more a short monologue my father used to say when I was small, and I can no only remember bits of it. It is about Harry, and his Hawk, and contains the following lines that I can remember:

'Arry 'ad an 'awk

'Arry put the 'awk in an 'at box

'Arry 'it the 'awk' on the 'ead wiv a 'eavy, 'ard, 'ot, 'ammer

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Martin

Hi, Martin-
This is all I found:

'Arry 'ad an 'awk in an 'atbag
And the 'awk made an 'orrible row
'Arry 'it the 'awk with an 'evy 'ard 'ammer
'Arry ain't got an 'awk now.

...and another:

Our 'arry 'ad an 'awk an'
    Our 'arry's 'awk 'ollered 'orribly.
    Our 'arry 'it 'is 'awk
    on the 'ead
    wiv an 'ard 'eaded 'ammer.
Now our 'arry ain't got no 'awk.

It seems as if this poem ought to be in Mr. Punch's Cockney Humour (1910) – but I can't find it there.

My granddad used to recite a variation of this (would have been in the early 1960's but doubtless much older)

'Arry 'ad 'an 'awk
'Arry 'it 'awk on 'ead with 'eavy 'ammer
'Awk 'owled 'orrible

Most of those things turn out to be from music hall songs or routines, but I have no idea where this one's from.
