...wow!!!

So, a long, long time ago I had a auto shop where I restored Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertibles and sent them to California to be sold to So Cal cool people like Amos...

That business lasted about 3 years and in 1985 I packed up and left to live in Wes Ginny...

A couple years ago I met this young man at Lowes who is a VW nut and we've become friends and he uses my garage to work on his old VW and pick my brain... Well, this has forced me to bring up torque specs and all kinds of VW stuff and that was all locked up in this brain file...

Opening this file has been kinda fun but it also brought forth a major memory that is quite intriguing... Ya' see, my shop was way out in the country in an old converted chicken house... Next to that shop was a large barn where I left...

...about 8 or 9, maybe as many as 12, parts Karmann Ghias...

"8 or 9, maybe as many as 12, parts Karmann Ghias", did you say, Boberdz...

Yup, that's what I said so...

...I Googled up Google Images and took a look at my old shop and guess what...

Yup, you guessed it... There is a high probability that those "8 or 9, maybe as many as 12, parts Karmann Ghias" are still there...

So, of course, I called my old Richmond homies, the other 2 of the "Curious Three" who are going to *sneak* out there and check things out...

Now, here's the deal... Karmann Ghias are bringing real & serious money these days so even parts cars might be like a gold mine...

I mean, I might even be able to make one car out of 'um for me and still have plenty to sell off...

I'll keep ya'll posted...

B:~)

Who owns the barn now, Beaubear? Remember what happened to OJ! He was "just trying to get back" his own stuff...

"Delusions of Wealth"? "Illusions of Wealth"? "Allusions of Wealth"?

I used to know a local friendly mechanic, years ago, who serviced my Audis - he also renovated old Karmann Ghias and shipped them all ove Europe.

I rarely see one over these days. My friend said that one of the worst places for body rot was where the main headlamps were fitted into the body - there was a concavity around the rim that trapped dirt, snow, etc.

Yup, Peter, thems were/are beautiful cars... None of the ones I left were converts...

Yeah, EB... I am fully aware of O.J. but...

...I'm a smarter crook than O.J.... If they are there I'll figure out how to extract them without going to jail...

"None of the ones I left were converts"

It took me a while to look at the thread.

When I saw the title: "Bobert opens old brain file and ..."

I kinda figured the open post would just be:

"... there was nothin' in it."

Then I got to thinkin' bout pokin' 'round in my own old brain bins and figgered I usually find stuff I didn't know I ever knew, so curiosity finally won out.

I'll have to 'member how that worked here, since there really was somethin' worth talkin' 'bout.

Now if I just had somethin' in one of my old files to say ... (?)

My only VW, a beetle, died and was given a decent sendaway when I started having trouble finding fairly basic parts. Had it been still worth working at the fixes, I probably could have found what it needed with a little more work; but after both of my kids contributed to runnin' the guts out of it it wasn't really in prime shape for too much rebuildin'. (That was about 20 years ago.)

Even with it's problems near the end of its life, I'd still rather have it back than one of the new pseudo-beetles. They look more like a grub worm that came out of its cocoon too soon.

One of my HS teachers had a nice little Ghia that I always sort of admired, but I probably didn't pay proper attention to the car since (according to my memory) she was a lot hotter than her wheels.

(Course I was young and impressionable back then.)

John

Fond memories of a Karmann, from when we inveigled one into a Mini sandwich and tried to find out how fast they corner.

They don't, do they!
Pretty, though, like many Ghias.

They tend to under-steer but with a few modifications the Gee-ro will out-handle a Porsche or Vette... I raced one for many years (autocross and mini-stock)...
