Subject: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: Will Fly Date: 25 Nov 13 - 02:29 PM Anyone been following the imminent appearance of Comet Ison? It's due in our skies in the next few days, and will be visible in the skies in the first two weeks of December - unless it breaks up in the vicinity of the sun. Scientists are enthusing over it as analysis of its gases will provide valuable information on the beginnings of the solar system. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: gnu Date: 25 Nov 13 - 02:43 PM Oh crap! More to research on the internUt. Like I got the time for more. >;-) Thanks, Will. Sounds interesting. Ya know, some of these scientists that study the Big Bang Theory should devote some time toward the Big Brawmp Theory. Lotsa gas to analyse. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: Bill D Date: 25 Nov 13 - 05:11 PM Will is right... it has the potential to be something special, or to fizzle out if it gets too close to the Sun. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 25 Nov 13 - 05:28 PM I have been following this since January. thread.cfm?threadid=148934&messages=30 Comet PanSTARRS was a non-event. Here's hoping for something better and clear skies. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: Will Fly Date: 25 Nov 13 - 05:50 PM Thanks, Keith - I did a search here but nothing came up... We're getting the odd clear night down here - might catch a bit of Ison sometime. |

Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: GUEST,John from Kemsing Date: 26 Nov 13 - 07:42 AM I watched a superb astronomical science programme(reasons for light and dark)on BBC4 last night and it even convinces me further that the more our experts study the above the less we all know about it. An example of this enigma is the assertion that the universe in which we are situated is expanding at an accelerating rate into eternity and oblivion. QUESTIONS REMAINING:- Why and How?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 26 Nov 13 - 07:46 AM Dark energy, whatever that is. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 26 Nov 13 - 07:55 AM It isn't so much approaching as returning after rounding the sun. It was visible, faintly, for a while last week. Spaceweather.com usually has the latest. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: GUEST,Musket Date: 26 Nov 13 - 01:42 PM Excellent Horizon special on The BBC last night about it. Most days, I drive East through flat big sky North Lincolnshire early in a morning, in the dark at this time of year. I look forward to be driving with it in view in my windscreen during the period if it survives the corona intact. One question it may give light to is whether the impact of a comet on a planet could, through the heat and pressure, be the catalyst that triggers reactions in amino acids. I recall a thread on another subject recently where someone reckoned we do not know how those reactions led to life. Some of the research, led by the university of Kent await data from observations to feed their encouraging experiments. We may get the answer, and that opens a huge debate...... Not to mention whether comets could be the source of our water. To date, the jury is out. |

Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: GUEST,Ed Date: 28 Nov 13 - 03:31 PM Well, first indications suggest that it's burned up. A real shame... Skarpi, please stop believing such unmitigated nonsense. Mind you, given that you believe the worst conspiracy theories regarding moon landings and the shuttle, there's probably little chance of that. I feel sorry for you. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: skarpi Date: 28 Nov 13 - 04:24 PM Dear Ed , don´t feel sorry for me never be , I ´ll be fine I just don´t believe you r Government and I will never do . that is just me . if you have problem with that , then its yours not mine . 98 % of what ever is on the Inter net is fake . But it is still sad when you people don´t even believe you own people who go to space to work and gain knowledge , when they start telling you that they see things that are not made by humans , unless some one is not telling . worry about our self not me . all the best Skarpi Iceland who is with the Trolls . |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: GUEST Date: 28 Nov 13 - 04:47 PM Skarpi, My apologies if my comment sounded patronising, which on reflection it probably did. I'm sorry For what it's worth I'm not American, and live a good deal nearer to you than they. Whilst I'm still fairly certain that you are wrong, your comment worry about our self not me is a good adage. All the very best, Ed |

Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 28 Nov 13 - 05:52 PM Comets do sometimes fall into the sun. |
Subject: RE: BS: Comet Ison approaches... From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 28 Nov 13 - 05:55 PM BBC 1 hour ago. Comet Ison was severely battered in its encounter with the Sun, and largely destroyed. Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer emerge. Astronomers continued to search for the object, but it eventually became clear that the much vaunted "Comet of the Century" had gone out with a whimper. Despite its great size, Ison was probably torn apart in the immense heat and tidal forces so close to the Sun. The European Space Agency's experts on the Soho Sun-watching satellite called the death of the comet at about 21:30 GMT. "Our Soho scientists have confirmed, Comet Ison is gone," Esa's twitter feed announced. |
