The Clutha bar a Glasgow pub with live music almost every night was at about 10.30 last night struck by a police helicopter which fell out of the sky.

There was thought to be about 120 people in the bar at the time thankfully many of them were standing at the right hand side of the bar where a band was performing and were able to escape through the door at that side or be pulled clear by folk who were in the area at the time and ran to help.

There has been 1 confirmed death but emergency services say that number will rise as they can search the left hand side of the bar where the helicopter is embedded.

The pilot must have been able to turn of the fuel supply to the engines in the sparse seconds before impact which no doubt saved many more lives.

So far 32 people have been evacuated to hospitals around the city.

This is not the way I wanted to celebrate St Andrews Day. Like all exiled Scots my thoughts are with the victims and their famiiles, the emergency services and the oft-maligned people of Glasgow who started their own evacuation before the emergency services arrived! The operation is now being described as "recovery" rather than "rescue" which has definite connotations.

Tragic. I hope the situation is not as dire as it seems at the moment.

Megan L - A helicopter expert on Sky News this morn reckoned that ones like the one involved have some kind of 'fail-safe' system which contains fuel in such a mishap & would have explained why there was no fire/explosion!

As I was listening to the news last night one witness said the engine misfired then stopped - then the helicopter fell. IIRC he also said the rotor blades were at a funny angle.

Here in the States, I just heard about this not too long ago on an overnight news radio station.

How tragic and horrifying! Our thoughts and prayers definitely go out to our friends in Glasgow.

Sad times, indeed.

Jay

We have great fondness and respect for the people of Glasgow, many of whom made our visits there times of great happiness. Prayers are for recovery, restoration, and that vigorous Glasgow spirit to carry all to healing.

Maeve and Truelove

In my youth, the Clutha and the Scotia bars were my favourite pubs when I was in the City.
They were no nonsense establishments, full of "folk worthies" like Billy Connolly, Danny Kyle, Hamish Imlach, Matt McGinn etc, there were sessions on the go all the time, with poetry from wee Freddy Anderson thrown in for good measure....great times, but times move on and there is a different clientele in the Clutha and the Scotia these days. They say folkies are banned from the Scotia (sacrilege)!!!

I stop right outside the Clutha every Saturday night on my way back from the greyhound racing in Shawfield Stadium, so I suppose I will see the wreckage tonight
Last I heard there were 6 dead and many injuries.....a few bodies remain within the building, which is in a perilous condition.

Condolences to the relatives of all who have been injured, or who have lost their lives....Ake

I heard about this earlier and thought "How awful." It is sad to see the rising count of those who were killed. When I entered Mudcat tonight, I wondered if someone had started a thread. Thank you, Megan.

Interesting that listening to music may have saved some lives.

Never made it to Glasgow but The Clutha were a group no doubt associated with the pub or pub name and reknown as a music pub as noted above and an accident at this time of year is indeed tragic

Our thoughts are with the helicopter pilot and police and the customers and people who died and the sense of compassion and community of the customers who calmly responded to the task in hand of removing injured customers to safety

We seem to suffer such incidents from time to time and such freak occurences just happen

Condolences to all involved

Ray

The Clutha were the little boats which acted as ferries and goods carriers on the River Clyde in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

I know some of the folk group, and have heard that the Bar and the group took their name from these little ships.
The wonderful Gordeanna McCulloch sang with The Clutha.

I believe the helicopter is being removed from the Bar today, friend told me last night that there is at least one body yet to be recovered.

Sad news. I lived in Glasgow as a boy after the war and have vivid and fond memories of the city. Went back in 2001 for a visit and had a wonderful time.

Condolences to all the families affected.

Clutha is the Scottish name for the river Clyde, so many things connected with Glasgow will have the name.

The good. kind, loving, Christian people at Westboro Baptist Church reckon this was God's punishment on Scotland for allowing gay marriages!

http://www.newnownext.com/westboro-baptist-church-blames-gay-marriage-for-scotland-helicopter-crash/11/2013/

I don't have the words to describe my feelings right now about them! I think I'll just direct my love towards those who need it.

Eddie

"Clutha is the Scottish name for the river Clyde" I think it is possibly closer to the Latin name for the river than the original Britonnic name or the Gaelic version.
