Mawkin Mild, brewed on the premises can be found at the White Horse in Edwardstone, Suffolk. Great evening session on the second Wednesday every month too.

In Scotland, it used to be heavy or light beer. The latter was probably similar to mild beer in England. IT was often darkrr in colour although pale ale was often sold as light beer too. Usually, it was slightly cheaper and not quite as strong as heavy beer but different breweries still produced a different type of beer. They were often very different.

Most good real ale pubs still sell pale ales but these will vary in strength and price. So, it's not quite the same as getting a pint of light or mild as such.

I'm not too "au fait" with all the different keg beers these days though. I prefer cask or real ale whenever I can get it.

Thanks for that Pete.
Bubblyrat, when I was in the RAF, in the mid 60's the mild on tap at NAFFI's in Lincolnshire and Rutland was Ansells King Pin. And what a great pint it was. Mind you, I was comparing it with the local Newark brewery, "Holes". Aptly named as the beer was like piss. Their only grace was "Castle Stout" which was smooth, dark and creamy. Needless to say, when they were bought out by Courages, the only beer to get the chop was..... "Castle stout".

I started going into pubs legally ahem in 1963 The piece of advice I received from older drinkers was avoid the mild as landlords pour any old rubbish into the barrels and serve it up. I started working in pubs in 1964 and it was indeed true - half finished pints all went back into the mild barrels I do not know if this still true.

Well, `i've been here a couple of weeks now and only had one pint of mild and one pint of brown and mild so far. both were Greene King. Not really anything to write home about. `However, I have had some very good bitter and am enjoying all sorts of beers along with the obligatory Pork Pie!

Looking forward to a couple of folk clubs in the next couple of weeks.

Pete, I came away and left your list behind in Australia. can you please email it to me again.

`Cheers for now

There was a dark(ish) mild on tap at the Phoenix pub just off Oxford Street in London earlier on this week, so it will hopefully still be there. Bloody lovely it was too.

Hope its OK to bring Folk Music into this thread. Many, many moons ago a number of us took Fred Jordan for a few jars in the Hilly Hill at Richmond (yes of course Yorkshire). Fred was full of praise for Theakstons Old Peculier, 5.6%, then served straight from the cask via enamel jug. "Lovely pint of Mild" he reckoned. RIP Fred.

The choice of beer is no longer restricted to mild, bitter and a bland keg lager.

A new generation of brewers is producing a growing range of interesting craft beers - available on draught and in bottle. Many offer different seasonal beers throughout the year.

See what your local brewery has to offer!

Oh! I Have been, henry. I'm awash with local ales!

I've only had about 3 pints of Mild so far, all dark, and none to really write home about, but I'm really enjoying the variety of tap and spile beers available. It's a real treat for me and I'm making a bit of a pig of myself. ;-))

From Chesterfield:

the Red Lion on Whittington Moor has Old Mill Brewery's mild always. It's my tipple of choice (a) because it's cheaper than the bitter, (b) because I strive to keep the traditional beers alive (I'm working hard on it), and (c) because when it's good it's good. BUT... it's very variable. Chesterfield is not a great mild area, and I suspect Maureen doesn't sell quite enough to keep it at its prime.

And if you're in the area, try Brampton Mild. Named after the product of a long-defunct brewery, this is a really excellent pint, but it's much stronger than you'd typically expect mild to be (ie og between 1030 and 1035). The "new" Brampton Brewery does a whole range of very good beers; Golden Bud has a very good reputation (justly so).

Come to the Black Country and enjoy milds from Bathams, Holdens, Old Swan, Sarah Hughes and plenty of others in the land that lager passed by. You'll find some bostin' food and plenty of music too at prices that'll astound you. Head for what CAMRA describe as 'the firmament of the three Gornals' and take it from there. Unlike our bull terriers we don't bite either!

Mmm, Batham's. Never (yet) had the mild, but the bitter is worth a sizeable detour.

Agang of us used to go camping in a place called Luddenden Foot, near to Midgely, in Yorkshire in the early 60s.
The local pub, The Nelson Head, served one of the finest pints of bitter imaginable - most of the crowd, who were to beer what wine buffs are to wine, all agreed - the finest bitter they'd ever tasted.
As we were packing up to go home on Sunday afternoon, the guvnor called a couple of us over and said, "I have a confession to make - we've been out of bitter all weekend so I've been serving you mild - hope you don't mind"
