Animals can help us understanding a person better.
The following are questions to facilitate this thread.

What animal or bird has always fascinated you?

When you visit the zoo, which animal do you wish to see the most or first?

What animals do you see most frequently when you are out in nature?

Of all the animals in the world, which are you most interested in now?

What animal most frightens you?

Have you ever been bitten or attacked by an animal?

Do you have dreams with animals in them or are there animal dreams you have never forgotten?

.. of course even though I would describe myself as a Whippet, my wife might suggest that I am best described as a very different animal in deed; pig, comes to mind. In fact, I suspect she'd tell you that 'men are all pigs' - then I'd remind her that we had to work hard to get to that level!

Me, I love dolphins, I'm quite calm, shy and quiet for most of the time though I can get noisy and excited. I once worked with Chimps for a while, now it's kids! Chimps are easier. My wife says I'm like a gorillar, strong, gentle and kind, keep away when I am cross or threatened or my family is. Me I think I look more like aan ape!! (With long hair, Not an Orang u tang though, my arms arn't long enough!) Eric.

Cat, what else? Even my friends and family say so. In answer to your questions, though, I feel a keen kinship with ALL critters, before anything I feel for humankind.

What animal or bird has always fascinated you? Cats, all kinds and sizes. Red-tailed hawk; it's my totem animal according to one Native American astrological chart.

When you visit the zoo, which animal do you wish to see the most or first? Cats. Dolphins, seals, polar bears, elephants, oh hell, ALL of them! Although I hate to see them in a zoo, I know the breeding programmes are vital.

What animals do you see most frequently when you are out in nature? Cats. Antelope, deer, coyote, bald and golden eagles, praire dogs.

Of all the animals in the world, which are you most interested in now? Cats. Whales, dolphins, and the Kermode Bear on Princess Island.

What animal most frightens you? Rattlesnake, I guess, hadn't ever thought about because I've never met an animal I was frightened of, well, maybe my Trys if I don't get up and feed him breakfast!

Have you ever been bitten or attacked by an animal? Had a cat latch onto my arm, full jaw clench, sunk in teeth and all when I was flea-bathing him in the tub and he got scared. Quite a site, me rising up in pain, screaming at my daughter to get him off, here's this 15lb Russian Blue tough guy, dangling, full body stretched out, from my right forearm! A tetanus shot and antibiotics and I was fine. Little bitty scars.

The other time was right after I broke up a dog fight involving my old dog, part pit bull and something else and a young, but fully grown yellow shepherd that was living with us at the time. While I was on teh kitchen floor looking over my dog for injuries the other got loose came running in and in the melee, it was my hand got ripped open. The companion of the shepherd, a Irish wolfhound was so worried about me, he was such a gentleman; followed me to the bathroom and gave me soulful love eyes. Luckliy I ahad just completed emt class and knew the proper way to take care of a dog wound. Usually they are so full of germs a doc will not stitch them up. They said I did such a good job of first letting it bleed freely,(took away lots of germs), then flushing it for a good ten minutes with cool water, then pressure bandage, that they went ahead and stitched it. Now, the scare just looks like part of my lifeline, probably added at least twenty years, so I can't complain!

Do you have dreams with animals in them or are there animal dreams you have never forgotten? Just had one with a cougar on a rock overlooking a trail I was on. Took as a warning to be careful in any plans for the future.

I will some times foolishly take on larger dogs to my own detriment It would never occur to me that someone might not want to pet me. I am loving and loyall, but I am not at all subservient. I like to be outside in all weather. Unlike some other West Highland Terriers I know, I do not obssess about rocks in the backyard nor do I pee at the front door when I greet people.

Ol' Slew Foot is a great song about a bear, especially the part where it goes "And some people say he looks a lot like me."

I've always been fascinated with monkeys (mostly New World monkeys)

I want to see the monkeys first, Mom!

The animal I see most ALIVE are the squirrels at ECU. You have to be careful--those little buggers throw acorns at you! Also, I see a lot of dead racoons on the side of the road. Poor little critters...

I'm most interested in cats! Since we got our cat Boo three years, ago my family and I have turned into kitty cat junkies!

I'm bloody scared of jelly fish. I almost got stung by a 5 foot one when snorkeling, but I got away before it realized I was there. I came about a foot away from touching it. This was in Japan, BTW, so now I don't have to worry.

I've been bitten and scratched by my cat about a million times. Mostly it happens when I'm holding her and she gets scared, or she accidently cuts you when her claws are untrimmed;but once I teased her too much, and paid for it by a bit on the nose. Ouch!

I never had any dreams featuring animals, or at least any that I remember.

My Chinese animal symbol is a Stallion. My sign is Sagitarius. My great-grandfather was in the Italian Horse Cavalry. Coincidence? You make the call. Although my mothers maiden name means "parrot" in Spanish...

There are also songs and rhymes about the man in the moon. Maybe we need a thread debating the ways to make green cheese, so we can gain a fuller appreciation of our solar system, and its music of the spheres. There many are areas of the moon that haven't been well explored yet, and just think of the possiblities for find many pockets of new and exciting kinds of cheeses. Maybe some will have longer and thinner holes than Swiss cheese and we can find cheap substitutes for the pipes in organs. We might be able to make an all natural organ by getting our 'air' supply from farting cats. [We'll have to re-engineer it, of course, to account for the difference of the velocity of sound in air and cat farts. Same problem with using cows for their pressurized methane. This would probably require too many cats for a long performance, and we'll probably have to stock up on frozen farts that can just be thawed as needed. Then we can kill the cats and use their guts in the string section.]

My animals depending on the mood are Bear, Owl, Racoon( I saw them in the wild in Canada this year, well I say in the wild ,,they were in a garden in downtown Toronto, but "wild, they were furious" until we gave them bisuits). And for the real spirit the Great Northern Diver, I sent a .Wav file to a mate . who inadvertantly played it loud in his office at 8.30 in the morning and scared the brown stuff out of all his colleagues. But all of them represent different aspects of my character The Squeak claims I look like a badger, but thats the effect of a grey beard and hair and glasses. But I know people involved with Shamanic ceremonies and beliefs and they talk a lot about identifying your "totem animal" and getting inside his skin and being guided by it, they also say you do not have to blieve in pagan things just be open to the influences.I understand a similar set of beliefs are common in native cultures both in North America and Australia.

Penny, Yeah I know all this anthropomorphic stuff is very un-scientific, and you don't find people selecting Daphnia or Pulex irritans as their totem animal. However as a professional scientist with a degree in Chemistry I am also in possession of a fully functional imagination and I do not find any conflict. Like WyoWoman I consider myself an otter-- an aquatic playful animal-- gives me something to live up to even if I am not always there. . . and like Micca I hold advanced degrees in chemistry and find no contradiction. John W. Campbell Jr. always believed that when magic was finally understood, the laws would be as "reasonable" as the laws of science, it's just that we don't know them yet. There is a reason why I am drawn to the otter, years before I ever saw one in real life.

Oooh, hippos, that's nice, I've always had a soft spot for hippos, even after seeing how they mark their territory.... they're the ones I'd go to see first at the zoo, if I ever went to the zoo that is. Haven't been for so long alone, only with my daughter so we tend to make for the children's corner where she can terrorise the little darlings to her hearts content. She broke a guinea pig once. Her favorite (and mine I suppose) are the ferrets. Grandfather used to keep them (yes, in his trousers) and I think she is attracted to the way they move like a silk ribbon in the wind. Better go, she's about to dress the cat as Barbie....

Ah Penny, you've missed a lot in life if you've never had an animal talk to you.

I remember this one time I was helping a friend move. He had this old gander that everyone was scared of. So I said I'd take care of him. I just went up and grabbed him round the neck and put him in a cage.
He cussed at me something rotten. When I moved away he settled down and just watched everyone as they passed by. Except that everytime I went near him, he cussed up a storm. There was NO doubt exactly what he meant.

You can't tell when I'm not being entirely serious?

My best friend is clearly a cat, demands food with soulful looks, all places - especially with food, are alike to him.

I have never quite been sure of any creature that quite spoke to me, and I haven't gone looking for one in case I didn't like what I found.

Best match so far, Alex the parrot. I don't know if you have ever seen this redoubtable bird. He is the project of a woman who is researching whether parrots use language, or merely parrot. There was a BBC program in which she used plastic shapes of various primary colours to show that he gave the correct answer when askd for the shape or the colour (to ensure he was associating the correct ideas, thus language, rather than parroting). he did very well at this, so she moved to something harder, a corn-cob, asking the colour.

Alex: want corn
Scientist: when you tell me what the colour is. What colour?
Alex: want corn
...and so on, and on, the scientist getting very irritable as she is being filmed failing. The parrot managed the body language of a child who cannot answer, doesn't understand why the questioner keeps asking, and is descending into sulk, wings hunched, beak down. Eventually,...

Alex: I go away now (shuffling down to the other end of his perch) I go away now.

And that, my friend and I agreed, was the sign of a very intelligent bird. Apparently he is getting worse, very insistent on his own way. And rude when he doesn't get it.

I reckon that colour vision, especially of ripe fruit and veg., is important to parrots, and he thought it was another colour he hadn't been told the name of, instead of the yellow (plastic) the researcher thought it was.

Truth? I would pick a gull. Yeah, I know, they're dirty little beggars and eat a lot of garbage, but..........Gulls know more about flying than other birds and they have an intimate understanding and feel for the mysteries of the wind. Sometime in my life I'd like to have that same form of communion with ANYTHING. I've been sailing over forty years and I'm still in awe of the gull's ability...and in my lack of it.......in everything. Maybe one day I'll feel that way about something; that total mastery and thoughtless ease, but I doubt it. So if there's anything to reincarnation, I'm requesting to be a Franklin Gull. I eat a lot of trash in this life too, so that part's not a problem.

Are you all the same with every group of people?

I'm going away now......

I was once had horses and was a complete horse nut. I used to try to imagine what it felt like to be one. To have stifle joints instead of knees and fetlocks instead of ankles and wrists. I wondered how it felt to run. I never thought I'd make a very good horse, though. Sometimes I feel like a cat and want the independence of a cat. And I'd love to lie around all day and have someone feed me. Other times I think I'm like an otter. I could live in the water if my skin didn't get all pruny. Plus, I already have that "shellfish in my paws, floating on my back" thing down.

Sometimes I'd like to be a red kite, rare and beautiful. Sometimes a dolphin, or a seal.
I loathe zoos and circuses. Everything in the wrong place.
I keep poultry, as well as cats and dogs, and my geese swear at everyone except me. We have long conversations when I'm weeding the vegetable patch. Sometimes I'd like to be a wild goose, or one of mine, because the solstice holds no fears for them. And they are spoilt rotten. Hwyl, Bron.

At times in my life I have been fascinated by owls, seahorses and dragons. I was born in a year of the dragon, but western horoscopes give me a centaur. We always had cats and I loved them all.

I most often see mosquitoes when I am out in nature, but there are also frequent sightings of ground hogs, squirrels, raccoons, birds, and deer.

I watch the squirrels a lot now, they've chewed through our compost container.

The family of big cats terrifies me when I think too much about how easily they can kill. I saw The Ghost and the Darkness recently and couldn't sleep afterwards; its about two man-eating lions. I cried this summer at the circus watching the tigers, I hated to see them doing silly tricks, I wouldn't ever train any of our cats to do that. Also connected to the circus; I spent 45 minutes watching, enthralled, as three elephants washed and played in our local lake. The health department then closed the beach down for the rest of the day due to elephant droppings.

I have been bitten by a dog, cats and attacked by a chimpanzee. When I was at the tender age of two my father had to run and remove me from my outdoor playpen in Jasper Park before that fascinating bear wandering by in search of our lunch came too close.

I have had nightmares about wolves, bears and ducks (yes it was a really strange and creepy dream). I also dreamt once about Charlton Heston and an ostrich but that one wasn't scary.

It may have been scary for Charlton Heston.

Art, I can just imagine you as that creature, swimming slowly up the river, half submerged, playing the guitar and feasting on Moss Nesters.

The folks near Fulton, New York, on the Erie Canal, started having yearly outings to eat and play music and record sightings of the lock moss nesters---what the creature was doing and if it made sounds of any kind or not. That happened after a folk fan heard me tell the story on the JJulia Belle Swain steamboat one summer---around 1987 I think. They just adopted the idea of the creature and had it living in their canal (at least where there was still water in it). I was really honored. For a few years they sent me the lists of sightings. I got a great version of an Erie Canal ballad called "THE BULLHEAD BOAT" from Lyman King of Fulton, N.Y. Had a ball singing it.

Given the nature the past week's MC dialogues...

Perhaps, you should consider clearing your postings...., especially "new threads".... with your mentor.

I'd guess it was a headless chicken because I'm often running around like one! Seriously, I'd have to say I was like my dog: hairy and unkempt, not in the first flush of youth, and a bit on the neurotic side. She's got one up on me: I have never yet gone for the postman. Nor have I relieved myself in public.

I am a jenday conure in all but voice.

What animal or bird has always fascinated you? Birds, owls, cats of any size, bears, whales, octopuses.

When you visit the zoo, which animal do you wish to see the most or first? Primates, especially gibbons and orangs. Then elephants, bears, and birds.

What animals do you see most frequently when you are out in nature? Not fair; I live in a place where the majority of wildlife has been mercilessly wiped out. The only black bear to wander across state lines in 30 years was shot on sight by the Dept of Environmental Mgt. Mostly I see housecats and rabbits and crows. Hundreds of crows everywhere I go.

Of all the animals in the world, which are you most interested in now? Human toddlers; fascinating and frightening at the same time, especially when they are your own. Other than that, birds and whales.

What animal most frightens you? Groupers. They terrify me. As do any humongous fish in the sea that can accidentally swallow an entire human being because they are so freaking huge. Oh, and lizards; too fast and wiggly (not including baby iguanas).

Have you ever been bitten or attacked by an animal? Only dogs, back when I was young and stupid enough to interpret hostility as overtures of friendship.

Do you have dreams with animals in them or are there animal dreams you have never forgotten? The only animal I dream about is my little Jekyll-bird, my heart and soul, whom I had to give away while I was pregnant (my jenday conure who hates children with a passion bordering on murderous rage). At least once a week I dream that I find her somewhere, abused and neglected and dying. :-(

Art, Gargoyle is referring to me starting this thread. He is suggesting I should first run my ideas by Rick, 'My Mentor', before starting what Gargoyle considers to be a meaningless topic and waisting valuable Thread space.

I have been known as ferret for many years because it rhymes with my surname (Merrett) but mainly because if a crowd of us are in an area we have not visited before I am the one who can 'ferret out' where all the good pubs, eateries etc. are. Many times rural pubs have been 'invaded' by a group of us and entertained with our folk singing and playing quite often behind locked doors until the early hours of the next morning!
