Subject: BS: Dress to the left or the right, sir ?
From: GUEST,Trouser question
Date: 10 Jan 14 - 12:18 PM

Having just misread the Thread title "Which Way Do Your Dogs Point?"
as - "Which way does your dong point"

My mind wandered to the question of which way do we men dress and why ?

I've always dressed to the left,
and after over half a century of comfort and habit have no idea
when or why I adopted this position?

Btw, I'm right handed if that has any significance.

Is there even any scientific, physiological/psychological reason ?

Mudcat Scholars please fell free to debate.....

It's in your politics. Left-wingers dress left, Right-winger dress right, and middle-of-the-roads go commando.

I always heard it as Carry, not Dress, from tailors.

I always assumed it's just the way you hang. Would love to see a survey. Going to google after getting my cookie back. Will update if time, I have to work soon...

Rapparee -- I always go commando thru the summer, but I still have trousers on, to one side or other of which I have to dress -- left
fwiw, tho I am right-handed; & more-or-less a-political these days.

Mrrzy -- I fear that 'hard data' would be likely to confuse rather than enlighten!

Some young men these days wear trousers with the crotch not far above the knee (which to me looks very uncomfortable and restricting) and I had assumed they are trying to make out they hang that far down! - maybe they are just having difficulty deciding which way to go.

Rap... hard data... hahahahahahaa!

I was asked this for my first suit. I had to ask for an explnation. I still didn't get *why* it was asked.

Now, why does a doc say "Turn your head and cough."? Minds me... I went for a physical prior to induction* into the Canuck Royal Militry College in Kingston. The doc said, "Drop trou." I did. He was sat behind his desk, cocked his head (intended) and said, "Two. Good. You can pull em back up."

* I was one of three accepted from nb.ca but a personal constraint came up and I had to bow out the very day before my picture was to be taken for the newspaper with the other two accepted. What might have been???

According to the Korean Guinness Book of World Records Kim Jong Il's dong was 3 feet 4 inches long - I wonder which pant leg he dressed in.

The story about Kim Jung Il reminds me of the legend of Big Pierre.

Since Big Pierre was a midget or dwarf about three feet tall, there was a mystery about why he was called "Big" Pierre. But someone noted that he was constantly accompanied by beautiful, sexy women. Then the word got out that he had a penis about as long as he was tall (sort of like Kim Jung Il).

It was a hydraulic engineer with a knowledge of physiology that blew up the myth about Big Pierre. "With a penis that size, in relation to the rest of his body, every time he had an erection, it would draw so much blood from the rest of his body, particularly his brain, that he would faint!"

========

Reminds me of the story about the small town in eastern Oregon where the townspeople were sufficiently envious of the annual Ashland, Oregon Shakespeare festival and all the tourist business it brought to town that they decided to go into competition with their neighbor across the state and started their own Shakespeare company.

They had committed so much money on costumes and sets for the program of six Shakespeare comedies they planned to present that there was little money left over for poster advertising. So one fellow said that he could make up a poster that would list the plays very succinctly and economically. The commissioned him to design a poster.

Forgetting that this guy had one of the raunchiest minds in the country.

He presented them with a poster with three titles in the top row, two in the second row, and one in the bottom row. It read:

3"               6"               9"
       Wet             Dry
          Miscarriage

"What the hell does THAT mean?" asked the dumfounded producer.

"Easy!" responded the poster designer. "3 inches = Much Ado about Nothing. 6" = As You Like It. 9" = The Taming of the Shrew. Then, Wet = A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Dry = Twelfth Night. Finally, Miscarriage = Love's Labors Lost." Clear as a bell to me!"

They decided to cancel the whole thing.

Left, these days anyway.
I found out about that in 1954, when my mother ordered me a Brooks Bros suit for highschool graduation, and I was too far out in the country for Brooks Bros to send a tailor, so they sent me a form, and that was on it. My father explained.

Would that be "left" from the owner's POV (the same way my heart is on my left) or from an opposing observer's perspective? This needs to be cleared up.

I sold tailored clothing for about ten years. We rarely asked that question - about left or right - because most men had no clue what you were talking about. And in most cases it didn't matter anyway. And unless you are actually having a suit hand made by a real tailor it's not going to be an option you can do anything about.

Yes, but it's intriguing just the same. I first came across the phrase as was uttered by Geoffrey Rush in The Tailor of Panama. It makes me wonder what it is the tailor does to accommodate the angle of the dangle.

Anyhow, most trousers we wear are surely not tailor-made but bought off-the-peg, so we just have to adjust to them, don't we? And who has any difficulty doing so? Thought not. The question is surely just one of those bits of chi-chi peculiar to the tailoring trade.

I had a couple of suits made when I was in Bangkok the other month.

The tailor measuring me didn't ask, he pointed out that Westerners always dress to the left.

Clever bugger.

Never mind. Given time, I will be able to throw them over my left shoulder. Always wondered why old men wear trousers up to their tits.

Hmmm... apparently, I may not have ever "gotten it", according to some posts after mine. I later "got" that I was being asked so that when the gentleman measured my inseam, he measured it on the opposite side so as not to disturb Little Gary. Otherwise, the posts I refer to appear correct in that it don't make no nevermind.

Westerners always dress to the left.

I reckon that goes back to the days of Y-fronts. To get your willy out it had to go to the left before doing a sharp turn to the right. Afterwards you'd stuff it back in, so it ended up pointing to the left where it had just come from.

Not a problem any more, I haven't seen Y-fronts for years.

Gnu - One of the reasons the tailor asks the question is that supposedly he will add a little more material on the same side that you "dress" on in order to accommodate your needs in that area. And a smart tailor always infers that his customer requires the extra room because he's so manly.

Maybe not, G-Force; but the question goes much further back in the past than the advent of Y-fronts, which might have gone out of current fashion but appear very recent to one of my age. Anyhow, whether you have seen them recently or not, they are still available and there is obviously still considerable sale for them. Just google to find how many outlets still deal in them.

Be buggered if I remember where we got it from, or if we wrote it, but back in the day, we used to sing a song about how to become a body builder by attending folk festivals.

I recall lines on a theme as follows; (repeated a la "Drunken a Sailor)

He joined the clog dancers and built his ankles up

He joined the Morris men and built his thighs up

Put a marrow down his trousers and he built his reputation up....

Women's buttons are the opposite of men's.

Look at the fly in your skivies, or buttons on your pants or shirt.
Compare the difference between men and women.

Then there was the tailor who was making a suit for a rock musician,
and was told to make the trousers tight, because "I want them to show my sex"
If I make them any tighter, replied the tailor, "They will show your religion."
