Subject: RE: Origins: Light from the Lighthouse From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Jan 18 - 04:05 AM I see what you mean, Catherine. The song gets fast on the lighthouse refrain, and then it keeps that fast pace on another verse - and I can't make heads nor tails of it. I hear "unto thy side," but I may be wrong. It's on this YouTube recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQyKGJH7wyE. The difficult part begins about 2:16. -Joe- P.S. What's the Phipps thread that's closed? I can open it, if there are no technical issues. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Light from the Lighthouse From: GUEST,catherine yronwode Date: 12 Jan 18 - 03:03 AM Re: the Ernest Phipps and His Holiness Singers version of "Shine On Me" -- There is a [closed] thread requesting lyrics to songs by Phipps, with the comment that due to the enthusiastic singing of the group, and the speed at which they sang, it is often difficult to understand or transcribe their lyrics. This has certainly proven to be the case with the Ernest Phipps version of "Shine On Me." It took my husband and i dozens of listens until we cracked two out of the three verses. The third one is still a mystery. Verse 1 is actually Verse 1 of "Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone" by Thomas Shepherd. Verse 2 is actually Verse 3 of "We will Stand the Storm" by Isaac Watts. Verse 3 eludes us for now. If we had even a few words to match against all of the online hymnals at Google Books, we could solve the mystery in a moment. We know that it must be lifted from another hymn -- but which one? For now, this is what we have: ===== Must Jesus bear the cross alone And all the world go free? No, there's a cross for everyone And there's a cross for me Chorus: Oh, shine on me, Oh, shine on me Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me Oh, shine on me, Oh, shine on me Let the light from the lighthouse shine on me Sure I must fight if I would reign Increase my courage, Lord I'll bear the toil, endure the pain Supported by thy word Chorus Chorus (fast tempo) Then the fast tempo verse that we cannot understand And a final two Choruses at fast tempo ===== Any help would be appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Light from the Lighthouse From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Jan 14 - 02:31 PM Several threads. If memory is working, I believe that the phrase was used in a gospel song in 1928. Check out the threads, it's there somewhere in a posted song. |

Subject: Origins: Light from the Lighthouse From: GUEST,mg Date: 10 Jan 14 - 02:05 PM I have heard two people recently introduce Light from the Lighthouse as written by Bob Zentz. I always thought it was an older song, perhaps with newer words. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfHN7-zjkrc From 1963. Of course Bob could have written it before that date but does anyone know the history? |
