Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 20 Jan 14 - 11:58 AM Linn- Odd, I was just seeing if I could stitch the "Minstrel Show" back together myself just yesterday. I've just posted a huge album of Mystic Chanteyblast photos on my Facebook page, if anyone is interested. There's another album of the Exceedingly Good Song Night that I was able to participate in while I was in NYC last week. Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Bat Goddess Date: 20 Jan 14 - 08:28 AM No, Charlie, I couldn't wrap my brain around it. Lyrics overload -- too many swirling in the brain, but not those. |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Jan 14 - 10:32 PM Thanks for posting this, Linn. We wimped out because of the weather. Barry couldn't remember "Sloop John A"? For shame!!! I found just the time to sing "Wake Up Susianna" at the Mystic Chanteyblast. It was lots of fun leading that one again. And I found the perfect time to lead the "Wreck of the Norfolk Express" at the Exceedingly Good Song Night in NYC; there are a lot of photos I've posted for both those events somewhere on Facebook. Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 Jan 14 - 02:59 PM To reiterate, the crew who braved the elements in order to sing were me (Linn Schulz), Dianne Lavoie, Peter Bixby, Nick Noble, Mary Currier, Tony Hilliard and Janet Young, Justine Donovan and Steve Smith, Don Hale, Barry O'Brien, and Barbara Benn. Plus a lot of people who WANTED to be there, but were foiled by the weather. We had some competition from a noisy table (wonder if they were left over from last night?), but we sang louder. And we sang: 1. Cannery Shed - Linn Schulz 2. Whale of a Tale (originally sung by Kirk Douglas) - Nick Noble Kirk & Esmeralda 3. Ye Marner's All - Peter Bixby 4. The Town I Loved So Well - Tony Hilliard & Janet Young 5. The Jeannie C - Dianne Lavoie 6. The Ways of Man Are Passing Strange - Peter Bixby 7. Nine Times a Night - Linn Schulz 8. Take It From Day To Day - Tony Hilliard & Janet Young 9. Salonika - Justine Donovan 10. The Captain's Wife's Christmas Pudding (or whatever the title is...) - Nick Noble & Mary Currier 11. The Rosabella - Dianne Lavoie 12. The Stevedore - Janet Young (and Tony) 13. Dublin In the Rare Old Times - Tony Hilliard 14. Plum Island National Anthem - Linn Schulz 15. Eddystone Light - Nick Noble & Don Hale 16. Rolling Down the River - Justine Donovan 17. Donkey Riding - Peter Bixby 18. Happy Birthday Interlude - Linn, Dianne & Company (H.B. Halleluyah Chorus & Why Were You Born So Beautiful) 19. Big Bow Wow - Don Hale 20. Race of Long Ago - Linn Schulz 21. All For Me Grog - Dianne Lavoie 22. Paddy Lay Back - Tony Hilliard 23. Who's On the Way - Barry O'Brien 24. That's All Right - Linn Schulz 25. Lady Franklin's Lament - Don Hale 26. Fire Down Below (Fetch a Bucket of Water, Girls) - Justine Donovan 27. Oh, Molasses - Nick Noble 28. Rolling Down to Old Maui - Tony Hilliard 29. Tinker, Tailor - Dianne Lavoie 30. Haul, Boys, Haul - Don Hale 31. Sailor's Prayer - Barry O'Brien 32. Bay of Fundy - Tony Hilliard 33. Union Maid - Nick Noble 34. Old Dun Cow - Peter Bixby 35. In the Port of Amsterdam - Tony Hilliard 36. Gin Was Mother's Ruin / The Nurse Pinched the Baby - Linn Schulz 37. Down the Line - Justine Donovan 38. Almost Gone [?] - Barry O'Brien 39. Black Betty - Dianne Lavoie 40. White Collar Holler - Dianne Lavoie (what I couldn't wrap my brain around to sing at the time was "My computer's down, dooby do down down...") 41. Pay Me My Money Down - Barry O'Brien 42. Sixteen Tons - Tony Hilliard 43. It All Makes Work for the Working Man to Do - Dianne Lavoie 44. Barrett's Privateers - Tony Hilliard 45. Sloop John B - Barry O'Brien (after I failed miserably to remember "Sloop John A") 46. Jamaica Farewell - Dianne Lavoie 47. Farewell To Tarwaithie - Don Hale 48. Roll the Woodpile Down - Peter Bixby 49. Out On the Rolling Sea - Barry O'Brien 50. Final Trawl - Tony Hilliard 51. Bunch of Thyme - Dianne Lavoie 52. Maggie May - Linn Schulz 53. Davey Louston -Justine Donovan 54. Before They Close the Minstrel Show - Dianne Lavoie 55. Jamestown Homeward Bound - Don Hale 56. Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her - Tony Hilliard 57. Nelson's Prayer - Don Hale Discussed a little of the history of the session history with "Leave Her, Johnny"... In the early days of the Friday trad session (meaning most of the 1980s), we closed with that song -- verses traveling around the crew. We sang for so long that not only did the regular session goers get thoroughly sick of it, but the Press Room staff got pretty tired of it as well. I think that's when session meister Tom (Hall, Curmudgeon) switched to "The Parting Glass" which was sung up until Tom lost his voice in 2009. When the monthly sea music session (this session) got started in 2003, we initially started using "Leave Her, Johnny" as a closer...but...twenty years hadn't been long enough. We were still sick of it (at least those of us -- read "Tom" -- who were still around). The "Leave Her, Johnny" based on the C. Fox Smith poem (recorded by Bob Zentz) is MUCH more "acceptable" but even the traditional version is okay as long as it's not overdone. Today was fine... Linn |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST Date: 19 Jan 14 - 02:54 PM Today is the 133rd anniversary of the launch of the RNLI lifeboat Robert Whitworth at Robin Hoods Bay. The Shanty group Kimbers Men wrote the song about how people shoveled snow and cleared the way through 8 feet of snow for 8 miles so the boat could be launched to save 6 lives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3A18VTbN2k |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Bat Goddess Date: 19 Jan 14 - 10:12 AM By the way, before I hit the bridge leaving town, I had sung through "Sloop John A" perfectly...no hesitations, remembered every verse and chorus. Go figure... Linn |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 Jan 14 - 06:46 AM When I turned down Priest Road there were a bunch o' what looked like power company trucks and guys in the road, etc. and I figured I'd come home to no power...but soon saw Christmas lights outside a house, lights on in the houses I passed, and, best of all, my porch light on as I drove down the plowed driveway (thanks, Drew!). I'd cleaned off the deck twice before I left home, but I think my plow guy not only shoveled TO the deck steps, but removed the more recent layer of white stuff from the deck. I woke up too early -- I'll post play list later. Right now I'm taking my tea and a decadent pastry upstairs... Linn |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 19 Jan 14 - 01:15 AM Linn, the town is Norwood, which I successfully returned to (in an hour less time than it took me to GET to Portsmouth!). And yes it was a lot of fun! Don |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bupkes Date: 18 Jan 14 - 10:31 PM That's very funny and consoling, Jeri. Nuts to no power! Marty |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Jeri Date: 18 Jan 14 - 10:22 PM So your electricity at home didn't go out? I made it to Newington. I'm not sure how much voice I had after swearing at the stupid drivers, and I was getting antsy about parking, driving, driving Dover, and driving home after to possibly have to shove my car in through a load of snow, climb through it and try to get the door open. Then, I checked Facebook to find the London Julie gig was cancelled and gave up. But I'd bought three different kind of nuts (what's with that?) at Trader Joe's and so had something to eat when I got home and found out I didn't have any power. Stay outta the fridge, don't cook, don't run water, but there was an abundance of nuts. |

Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Jan 14 - 09:15 PM And Barry O'Brien! No, I didn't forget him; I just didn't get it written into the last post. Linn |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Jan 14 - 09:13 PM I drove in to Portsmouth wondering all the way whether I was crazy or not...fearing no one else would show up. I got princess parking right in front of The Press Room. The jazz people had just started to pack up. Dianne was first to arrive after me and we mused for awhile that it might be just us... You know, I can't think of a better way to spend a snowy afternoon than in a snug, well supplied pub singing. We really didn't expect anyone too far afield. Dianne is from Portsmouth, Peter Bixby arrived from Dover, but then in came Nick Noble from Worcester, MA and Mary Currier from Rhode Island. They were actually coming up to New Hampshire for the London Julie concert at Red and Shorty's later this evening (which I'd also planned to go to) -- but we got word that it was cancelled midway through the session. Then Tony Hilliard and Janet Young arrived from Gloucester. A bit later Don Hale arrived from the south end of 128 (sorry, Don; can't remember where you live, but it's close to Attleboro, right?). Because the London Julie show was cancelled Justine Donovan could come, and Steve Smith. Barbara Benn was also there. We had a grand time! I'll post the play list tomorrow because right now I'm taking a glass of rum upstairs and will read and listen to music until I turn the light out and go to sleep. The drive home, while a lot better than the drive in, still involved precipitation and dropping temperature so there was the threat of ice. I REALLY need to wind down! What a wonderful session! Thanks so much for everyone who braved the elements and the tricky driving to get there! Linn |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bupkes Date: 18 Jan 14 - 03:46 PM Well, I picked up Kevin and then we were skidding and found it too difficult to drive back to I 95. I took Kevin home, and am not sure whether to proceed. The weather forecast is Winter Storm Warning, 6 -- 8 in. snow until 9pm in Portsmouth. |
Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bupkes Date: 18 Jan 14 - 11:57 AM Charlie asked who's coming from greater or lesser Gloucester: I'm driving up and picking up Kevin McDermott in Groveland on the way; I think Peter & Audi Souza will come, but arrive after 4 or 4:30. Tyler and a friend of hers are coming. -- Marty |

Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Jan 14 - 10:20 PM We'll be wrapping up the session 15 minutes early tomorrow -- at 7:15 instead of 7:30. London Julie (session regulars Justine Donovan, Susan Young, Ramona Connelly, and Carol Coronis) are doing a house concert at 8 PM in Dover, NH at Red & Shorty's...and I can use 15 minutes extra travel time to get there and find a parking place. More information here -- Red & Shorty's -- and you can call for information at 603-776-3305 Linn |

Subject: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 13 Jan 14 - 10:43 AM This Saturday, January 18, 2014, is our monthly Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Ballad Sing, from 3:30 until 7:30 -- the first Press Room Sea Music Sing of the New Year and the second without Tom Hall at the helm. The location is, of course, The Press Room on Daniel Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. And the weather looks good, sunny and reasonably warm and, with the warmish temperatures, fog and rain, parking places should be reasonably snow-free on Saturday. No, I don't yet have a date for a memorial gathering for Tom at The Press Room -- but now that my mother's funeral in Milwaukee and the holidays are survived, I can seriously start planning it. Please bear with me; it's been a complicated two months... I'm looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible! Linn |
