Subject: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: ChanteyLass Date: 14 Jan 14 - 10:59 PM Now that Chantey Blast is over, it's time for a new thread! The 35th annual Mystic Sea Music Festival starts on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at 7 PM, and continues almost continuously through Sunday afternoon, June 15, 2014. Here's a link to the website for more info. http://www.mysticseaport.org/event/sea-music-festival-2/ Some of the line-up for June's Sea Music Festival are Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman, Barrouallie Whalers, Martin and Phil Hugill, Ana Vinagre, Jack Dalton, Dan Milner and Robbie O'Connell, The Johnson Girls, and Bob Walser. I hope to see you there! |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: maeve Date: 15 Jan 14 - 07:33 AM Well now, doesn't that look like a fine line-up? Have a wonderful time, Chanteylass. |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Jan 14 - 08:16 PM I'm looking forward to hearing Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. I've listened to a number of their CDs but never heard them live. They also have an interest in Cicely Fox Smith's poems. And of course I'm looking forward to the rest of the line-up as well. Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: MMario Date: 22 Jan 14 - 08:34 AM I find it interesting that I just got the spring newsletter from Mystic - which mentions various things and events to the end of June; but no mention of the Sea Music Festival. Though I guess most members would already be aware of it. |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: ChanteyLass Date: 22 Jan 14 - 09:36 PM Oh, my! If the spring newsletter you got is the WindRose, you are correct that it does not mention the Sea Music Festival! In the case of the Morgan's ports of call, summer camp, and sailing programs, it actually goes into August! For the latter two, that may be to encourage early registration. For all other events and activities, it seems to go through May. I imagine the Sea Music Festival will be in the summer newsletter which I hope comes out early. However, the dates are on the website at the link I posted when I started this thread. |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: Trad Folkie Date: 27 Jan 14 - 08:06 PM I just created a new thread for the 2014 Mystic Seaport's 35th Annual Symposium "MUSIC OF THE SEA" Call for Papers. The Friday, June 13, session will be held on the maritime campus of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point in Groton, CT, and the Saturday session, June 14, will be held at Mystic Seaport, in Mystic, CT. |

Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: ChanteyLass Date: 16 Mar 14 - 09:14 PM Time to bring this thread back up to the top! I was at the seaport today, and it was a sunny, cold, windy one, but any day at the seaport is a great one. I saw the Morgan for the first time since early December, though of course I've been following her restoration on the seaport's website. I found a dime on one of the dirt walkways. Nobody was around, so I picked it up and put it in my pocket. Don was today's chantey singer. A large group of students from Japan, probably high school age, came with a translator and guide to the seaport and heard him. He asked if any of them played an instrument. One plays a mandolin, another drums, and a third the koto. They were an attentive audience and Don got them to participate on a chantey. After, the koto player and some of her friends asked Don to write the name of two songs ("Molly Malone"--this was Music of the Sea and Shore, and tomorrow's St. Patrick's Day--and the chantey "Haul on the Bowline" and to sign his name. The koto player came over to me to show pictures on her phone of her playing the koto. I asked if she played "Sakura." She smiled and said yes, and I started singing the song. Okay, I only know the first two words, "Sakura. sakura," but I hummed a little more. She smiled again, said with surprise, "You know it!" and hugged me. Then she showed me a video of her koto teacher playing it. Like I said, it was a great day at the seaport, and the days and evenings of the Sea Music Festival will be great! |

Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: sciencegeek Date: 06 Apr 14 - 08:11 AM was thinking Mystic and Bob Webb's memorial service yesterday. I really hope to see Helen & Margaret this June. Did they have any info on the symposium lineup? |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: ChanteyLass Date: 06 Apr 14 - 09:50 PM The memorial service brought me to Mystic, but I stayed for the rest of the day. The flyer I picked up was one of a few sitting on top of a barrel in the Neptune's Orchestra exhibit where Music of the Sea and Shore is presented until May when it moves to the Green. I don't know anything about the symposium lineup. I guess that's still to come. I plan to be back at the seaport on May 17, when the Morgan leaves for New London, but I may get back there sooner. My guess is that I won't find out anything until it appears on the website. And I still have the Alistair Anderson CD for you! |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: GUEST Date: 07 Apr 14 - 10:15 AM I was talking with Craig Edwards yesterday and mentioned to him that one of the highlights of the Fisherpoets Gathering is the Sat night poetry contest. A line is given out and participants come up with an 8 line poem using that line or phrase. It is a fierce competition with a lot of entries (no prize, but bragging rights). How about a new chantey contest at SMF. No parodies, but something fresh and new, either referencing historical or contemporary work, I will disqualify myself (maybe ) having already written a yachting chantey.....who's got the line? |

Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 27 May 14 - 11:46 PM Besides the awesome Dan McKinnon, another Nova Scotian will be there. Cindy Campbell-Stone has been researching and working towards this show about Catherine Gallagher for years. Catherine Gallagher was one of the people who supplied songs for Dr Helen Creighton. Cindy has been invited to lecture on this work at the music of the sea symposium and presenting exerpts in workshops during the upcoming Mystic Sea Music Festival in Mystic Seaport, Connectcut in mid June and would welcome any and all
Please take in her lecture and give her feedback |

Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: Charley Noble Date: 04 Jun 14 - 08:51 PM More advice to newbies: Come on Thursday if you like leading songs. The after concert shanty session at the German Hall is less crowded and you may be able to lead more than one shanty. Oh, and don't forget to charge your camera batteries before arriving at the Festival, and bring your charger. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: ChanteyLass Date: 05 Jun 14 - 10:06 PM Another hint about leading songs at the late-night pub sings: if you have one you plan to sing, try to do it early before someone else sings it! It's okay if the same song is sung once on each of the three nights but not so good if a song is sung more than once on any given night! |

Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: Gibb Sahib Date: 11 Jun 14 - 09:09 PM Question for local/programming people: The Symposium schedule states, for Friday, "Please join us at Mystic Seaport following the Friday symposium for a special presentation by the Barrouallie Whalers." *Does anyone know the exact time planned for this "presentation"? The symposium would probably end at 3:30. The Friday evening concert (in which the Barrouallie Whalers are scheduled to perform) starts at 7pm. Presumably, this "special presentation" is some time between 4pm and 7. But when? Will it require $35 admission fee for the Seaport on Fri. just to see that presentation at the end of the day (seaport closes at 5)? And an opinion question :) And is it worth buying an "all access pass" just to get into the Seaport to see this late Fri. afternoon presentation when the Two Day Pass gets you into the concert starting @7 that evening and every other thing thereafter? Thanks, bullies! |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: ChanteyLass Date: 11 Jun 14 - 10:07 PM Gibb, are you going to be at the symposium, or at least the afternoon portion of it? I'm guessing you are flying in from CA, but I don't know when or where you are arriving or if you'll be too tired to go to the symposium which is free at Avery Point. I also don't know if the seaport would charge you or not. It will probably be close to closing time. The last time the Barrouallie Whalers did a demo we were told before leaving the symposium at what time we should gather at the seaport. My member's pass is a Plus Membership, so I can bring one guest any time I go. I can meet you in the entrance building to get you in free for the demo late Friday afternoon. I have a definite guest for Sunday and a tentative one for Saturday, but none of my friends have claimed Friday. I'm going to PM my email address and you'll be able to contact me that way to let me know. You can also email me your email address, but do NOT PM it to me because I'll only have my cell phone with me and won't be able to access PMs because I don't have a Mudcat cookie on it. If you email me your address, I can send a message to let you know at the end of the symposium what time the demo will be and when I should be at the entrance building. |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: Gibb Sahib Date: 12 Jun 14 - 08:41 AM Thanks very much, ChanteyLass, but I can't make any definite plans. I might pop in, might not, depending on timing of various things. Don't think I'll be able to make the symposium. And I have an engagement at 5pm. I'm being vague. I had simply hoped the Seaport had posted the exact time and info for this "special presentation" on their site. I mean, it is definitely scheduled, right? So why leave it unannounced? The same goes for the Festival events, i.e. who is performing where and when. For some reason, they don't post this, though they have it mapped out and you see it on paper once you get there. Once in the past I found the schedule document, on-line, but posted privately! Anyways… whinging is fun. :-) |
Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Jun 14 - 08:50 AM Nope the Seaport is not posting any spreadsheets for the day activities Saturday and Sunday, or if they have, I'm unable to find any. We'll just have to pick them up at the gate. Judy and I should be arriving late this afternoon, and probably grab a bite to eat before the evening concert. Charlie and Judy |

Subject: RE: Mystic (CT) Sea Music Festival 2014 From: ChanteyLass Date: 16 Jun 14 - 09:43 PM I'm home. I'm still exhausted. That's due to the normal lack of time I find to sleep during this festival, but in addition I had insomnia Saturday night. I hope to write more about it when my energy returns. In the meantime, my quick summary: it was wonderful! |
