Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: treewind Date: 26 Mar 14 - 04:52 PM I've been getting occasional YouTubes with no sound recently. I'm not absolutely sure, but I think I have sometimes solved the problem by switching browsers - I usually use Chrome or a Chrome-alike (Chromium or Iron) but switching to Firefox brings the sound back. "an unprecedented number with those individual volume controls for the video turned down." Oh yes - I've been caught out by that one too [blush] |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: frogprince Date: 25 Mar 14 - 06:52 PM Uh-huh; I was happy awhile back to be able to help somebody here sort out his messed up monitor color (it just needed degaussed) because I had just BTDT. And, on second thought about that, somebody else here had just straightened me out on that one. : ) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: Jeri Date: 25 Mar 14 - 06:11 PM Guess why I suggested that. BTDT. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: GUEST Date: 25 Mar 14 - 05:55 PM Well...sitting here feeling stupid...I don't know that I can name any of the "silent videos". Until recently I had come across just a rare "silent" one; the last few days I have been getting a bunch of 'em. Apparently I had somehow just stumbled unto what was for me an unprecedented number with those individual volume controls for the video turned down. Thanks all. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: Crowhugger Date: 25 Mar 14 - 05:53 PM I've never had that problem with youtube, but sure do (well, did) have it with soundcloud and vimeo. In my case the cause certainly was not the computer volume, nor the site/file volume, nor my firewall (gave temporary trusted site status to check the last one, as my general security level is fairly high). A bit of related thread drift: I soon gave up on and deleted my vimeo account because their help people were useless to a degree that wasn't even entertaining. My soundcloud account may end up a "gone-er" too--there is so much more music to get on with and so little time in a day already that (until I'm cornered into HAVING to do so) I'm not willing to prioritize time to figure out user-unfriendly sites. Far easier to share audio only by turning it into a "video" with a movie editor, just add a photo to my mp3 and youtube will accept it as a movie. Most of my use of these sites is to share rehearsal recordings with the people who were rehearsing. I sure do hope that frogprince's issue is not a harbinger of me having a similar problem at youtube! In my "spare time" I may try soundclick as several people here use it and (so far!) I do get the sound for their files with no problem. Dang technology. Love it. Hate it. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: meself Date: 25 Mar 14 - 05:27 PM Okay - the first one is 'Quiet Bob', the next one 'Silent Mary'. Someone else's turn, now. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 Mar 14 - 01:38 PM Please name some of these silent videos. I am only an occasional user, but I have had no problems, except one on which there were copyright limitations. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: Mr Happy Date: 25 Mar 14 - 12:48 PM Turn it up to 11? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 25 Mar 14 - 11:18 AM Jeri's second advice seems most plausible to me. YouTube (like its mother Google) collects all its users' preferences under the pretext of doing us a favour; some of these settings may become confused. The idea of storing a "typical" playback level per uploader may make a tiny bit of sense. On the YouTube page of the video, right below the actual video display rectangle, there are speaker and volume symbols to click and drag. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: meself Date: 25 Mar 14 - 10:23 AM I've encountered the same phenomenon from time to time, though not often. And I've seen bemused comments from people who obviously were getting no sound from clips that ran fine for me, so ... ? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: Jeri Date: 25 Mar 14 - 10:05 AM Make sure the speaker icon on you computer shows sound is on, and adjust the level. Make sure the speaker icon on the YouTube video shows sound is on, and adjust the level. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: frogprince Date: 24 Mar 14 - 10:18 PM Being as all the ones I'm thinking of are obviously supposed to be musical performances... I'm running windows 7. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Youtube sound From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Mar 14 - 10:14 PM Of course some YouTube clips are silent in the first place. I don't know if there is any way to know if a clip is one of those, or whether the sound just isn't getting through. |
Subject: Tech: Youtube sound From: frogprince Date: 24 Mar 14 - 08:33 PM I'm finding what seems like an increasing number of YewTewb vids that just run silent, whether or not they run deep. Do I need to tweak some setting, or download some new program, or what? Generally it seems that all the vids from a given poster either play with sound or don't, so I suppose it's a format issue. |
