For years now I have noticed that whenever I wake there is a song or a tune being played in my mind. I have no control over it at all, sometimes it is a song that I haven't thought of in years, sometimes it is one that I have never sung. Sometimes it is a current favorite, other times it is one that I have never particularly liked. It seems to be a random looping.

As an example, this morning I woke up with Columbus Stockade. Yesterday it was Moon River, the day before it was Nine Pound Hammer.

Anyone else do this? Anyone with an explanation for the phenomenon?

Yes, Ebbie, I do this quite a lot. And the song is nearly always pertinent to something in my life. It's as if my subconscious is using music (which I've always loved) to send me a message. Some examples are:-

Going round the supermarket I found myself silently humming Max Bygraves' song 'I'm a Pink Toothbrush, You're A Blue Toothbrush...' as of course, we needed to buy toothpaste, which I'd forgotten.

Another time, after the death of a very dear friend, I found
the tune of 'My Little Nicotine Gal' (a Norfolk song which she had always loved) was often in my mind. Made me sad and happy at the same time.

And when I'm a bit low for any reason, the Life Of Brian song, 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' pops into my mind.

I have to say, it's always quite beyond my control, and I sometimes have to think why it is that a particular song has arrived!

Reel to reel?

I like to break it up with a slip jig.

Still got the old Revox B77 in a box in the attic though

I would compare that to waking to the clock radio. ;-)

I often wake with a tune running through my mind, but sometimes it's not one I've ever heard before. So I hum or whistle it into the recording app on my phone. I really will have to gather them into some sensible kind of order, have got around 40 so far, one or 2 with words.. Anyone else have this odd tendency? Oh, I do get known tunes too.

I sometimes 'hear' a tune in my dreams that are complete- but I never remember how they go.

Some psychologists have said that the tune brings forth the lyric in the sub-conscious that relates to something you are thinking about at the moment. If you can chase down the lyric to that tune you might find an idea that is "buried" that will surface.

If you are a practicing musician and are learning a tune, and in your waking hours you go over it many times, it will follow you throughout the day and in the night. It actually may be a valid form of practicing the tune until you get it.

Yup!

OCD, well-channeled and fed by good recordings of good music, plus a discriminating internal decision-maker on what to fetch up and when.
