Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 20 Jun 14 - 10:51 AM Apologies guest, Allan and all: serious mistake on my part. For some reason I can't explain, I thought Uruguay's population was larger and Glasgow's smaller than they respectively are. The Glasgow population was Britain's second largest in my infancy (but not as big as Uruguay's). I see now that it has dwindled to half its former size thanks to boundary changes, resettlement to surrounding tow,ns etc. Uruguay is still the smallest country in the tournament, by population. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Musket Date: 20 Jun 14 - 10:55 AM About a gaggle of South London boroughs according to the commentator last night. I translated that into three Rotherhams in my mind. And that is a frightening thought at any level... |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: gnu Date: 20 Jun 14 - 01:00 PM No penalty shot given to Costa Rica and then Italy gets 2.5 obvious bad calls for free kicks? I absolutely LOVED the goal before half time yet I still want Italy as England's prospects (once again, as understand it, hinge upon such a win). That goal was from God as a smite for the ungiven penalty shot. >;-) In any case, it's and exciting game... sorry if I disturbed anyone with my loud response to the beeeeeautiful goal. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 20 Jun 14 - 01:31 PM It is Peter and of course the smallest nation to ever win the World Cup - and not once but twice it is has won it. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,LK867 Date: 20 Jun 14 - 01:57 PM Was it just me or did anyone else notice Italy deliberately missed three open goals today ? |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Musket Date: 20 Jun 14 - 02:06 PM i doubt they missed anything deliberately, but the radio commentary said they missed a couple of sitters. I will have to wait till I watch the highlights when I get in from the rub a dub dub tonight. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: MGM·Lion Date: 20 Jun 14 - 02:17 PM Well, there's England out. Seve us right, the rubbish qe had been playing. Italy too, probably, if they go on playing as ineptly as that. Thought they were sleepwalking. Anyone ever seen a worse display of refereeing ~~ if that travesty could be dignified by the name? Emma and I decided he must be an impostor who had locked the real ref in the loo & hired the costume at a joke shop... ~M~ Just going down now to watch France v Switz. Here's hoping for something a bit more worth seeing... |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: MGM·Lion Date: 20 Jun 14 - 02:52 PM ½-hr later & still fulminating inwardly about that great big booby running about masquerading as a referee. Not even as if he could have been got at by either side. He spread his ineptitude with absolute impartiality both ways. Blatant yellow cards overlooked [the only one he gave was for sod-all to the wrong man], 2 obvious penalties missed ~~~ as Mr Wooster might have remarked: did you ever in all your puff see such a perfect perisher? GGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,Musket Date: 20 Jun 14 - 02:53 PM There's a thread about spelling mistakes if you are interested Michael. Runny poo. Useless bloody Ities. No matter, test match season in full fling and I am a free man from next week so plotting my diary to take in some. Not for thirty odd years have I had opportunity to watch a full test match. Just the one day knock about fun or one day of a test. Bring it on. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: gnu Date: 20 Jun 14 - 03:00 PM Ahhh. So I wasn't the only one who thought the ref was a total you-know-what. I sometimes wonder due to my limited knowledge but that display of ineptitude was obvious to even me. Of course, no matter now. Done deal. Let's see what the French and Swiss are up to. Got the rest of me bugs cracked just in time and the ale is cold. Any thoughts on USA v Portugal on Sunday? |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 20 Jun 14 - 04:03 PM Ugh gnu! How could you? Cold beer! Grooooo! I like it at room temperature, not icy. I should think it puts barnacles on your binnacles like that. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST Date: 20 Jun 14 - 07:15 PM League of course being from Lancashire said Dave the Gnome. The George Hotel, Huddersfield is not in Lancashire. I never progressed past the school team but I enjoyed running down the left wing before I discovered girls and booze I spent a lot of time at scrum half or stand off (fly half) and never discovered any girls or booze there. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,Musket Date: 21 Jun 14 - 01:51 AM I didn't discover many girls as a tight head prop for that matter. Got my balls squeezed a few times though and I am convinced either a second row or number 8 has carnal knowledge of me. I discovered the booze back at the clubhouse. I am completely out of touch with them but I may still hold the Worksop Rugby Club record for the dance of the flaming arseholes. Less than two inches. When one of the Peach twins tried to beat it he ended up explaining himself in A &E. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Big Al Whittle Date: 21 Jun 14 - 05:32 AM ah yes... he got blowback. we had to take one bloke to hospital with internal burns. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Musket Date: 21 Jun 14 - 07:17 AM In this bloke's case, it was just a very sore skin and not as hairy an arse as before. A a fashion item, it is sure cheaper than anal bleaching, if truth be known. I contend that my record stood on account of having a hairier arse than most, protecting the skin more. My record was with a rolled up copy The Daily M*il, and I remain grateful to Mr Dacre and his motley crew. I think Al may be referring to scorching a Tudor rose onto a whitewash wall. I never tried it to be fair. I do know that it must be an old fashioned whitewash wall though, as more modern rendering is more heatproof and the scorch mark doesn't show. Anyway, Brazil v Costa Rica in the final? Form does not seem to affect results up to yet. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,MikeL2 Date: 21 Jun 14 - 09:30 AM Hi Michael <" MikeL -- Just out of interest what your objection to Suarez 'as a person'? Seems a likeable enough young man to me."> I don't like his attitudes and anyone who goes biting lumps out of the opposition doesn't go down as likeable to me !! But as I said earlier he is one hell of a player. Regards MikeL2 |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,MikeL2 Date: 21 Jun 14 - 09:37 AM Hi G Force I agree with some of your comments about Gerrard. He has never produced consistent top form for England. Great club player and OK he made a mistake that may have lost Liverpool the League but he had a great season otherwise. As a captain he does not appear to be able to organize his team once they are on the pitch. Unlike John Terry and Rio Ferdinand who got left behind he does not inspire and marshall the defence. INHO if either or both had been playing against Uruguay we would not have gone gung-ho for the win after we had equalised. Cheers MikeL2 |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: MGM·Lion Date: 21 Jun 14 - 10:46 AM Oh, yes, MikeL; there was that bite. Odd sort of way to go on. Have never quite figured that out... |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,MikeL2 Date: 21 Jun 14 - 11:22 AM Hi Michael Actually he was penalised on two occasions. One for the Chelsea Branislav Ivanovic incident; the other was in Holland when he was playing for Ajax against PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal. He never played for Ajax again. Maybe we should have taken the same steps ?? !! Regards Mike |

Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,michaelr Date: 21 Jun 14 - 01:49 PM Well, it has surely been interesting. Spain crapped out, Italy looks sluggish, and right now Argentina can't get anything going against Iran. Netherlands and Germany are my favorites so far. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: gnu Date: 21 Jun 14 - 02:01 PM Well. That was quite a game. Felt bad for the Iranian keeperin the first of 4 minutes added. The lad did a great job all game and there were many saves. Then, heartbreak at the end. They fielded a good team. I was impressed. Now it's time to cheer for the Mainland English. >;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: MGM·Lion Date: 21 Jun 14 - 02:33 PM Two good candidates there for sure, michaelr. I favour Germany to win myself -- let's see how they do in ½-hr's time; while Emma fancies France. What price Messi, tho? Just as one was wondering where all the magic had gone ~~~ Vrrrrooooommmmm! You'd think he'd saved it up, just for a climax. But could even he be quite so adept a showman as that? ~M~ |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: gnu Date: 21 Jun 14 - 03:57 PM Well the present game is all entertaining. Seems like Germany is gradually matching Ghana's open, balls to the wall, style, bit by bit. I will be glued to the screen. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: The Sandman Date: 21 Jun 14 - 08:57 PM dont cry for me argentina, we wont because they will win the cup |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Jun 14 - 04:46 AM My husband says he thinks Germany will win, because they're focused and determined. (Two things the England team were not.) I felt a bit sorry for Rooney sitting dejectedly in front of the press, fielding questions about their disappointing performance. My husband said, "He can wipe his tears on his payslip." ! |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: MGM·Lion Date: 22 Jun 14 - 05:01 AM I too thought Germany would win -- see above. But drawing with Ghana has somewhat reduced their chances, eh? Just suppose USA beat them & overtake them, & Ghana win remaining match. Unlikely; but Germany no longer one of the cast-iron certs to proceed as appeared previously. Still -- keeps things interesting! ~M~ |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: gnu Date: 22 Jun 14 - 06:25 AM Interesting is good. Looking forward to the USA game even though I know little about either team. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Jun 14 - 11:43 AM well Klinsman is working for USA. At least ten times more intelligent than anyone involved in the England squad - should be interesting. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST Date: 22 Jun 14 - 01:54 PM Just to put the UK's early exit in context, Belgium goes through...that has to hurt. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Jim McLean Date: 22 Jun 14 - 02:21 PM I was surprised not to see a white face in the Ghana team. Is this a result of reverse racism? |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Ebbie Date: 22 Jun 14 - 02:46 PM I am a woman. I am an American. I have just discovered football! (American style football is misnamed- I am in awe of 'soccer's athletes. Maybe American football should be called 'Passball'? Or 'Kickball'?) I have now watched all or part of four matches- I had no idea that one could scarcely drag one's eyes from the screen. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 22 Jun 14 - 06:39 PM For once I actually felt sorry for Rooney and thought for once he showed humility when facing the press. Too be fair whoever Hodgson would have picked for his team whether it be younger players or the usual faithful old timers if the same failure had occurred he would have still been slammed for it no matter what he decided to do. Change of manager perhaps I don't know. I really thought that his constant support for his players would have made a difference. Think I will stick with rugby I know where I am there. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,gnu on laptop Date: 22 Jun 14 - 08:02 PM UNreal. Yer ahead and ya get the ball in their end with less than 60 seconds left in the game and ya try to make a play rather than simply passing it BACK to your defence? WTF? USA deserves what they got with seconds to go. Piss me off!!!! Stunnedasmearse crap that. Champions don't make mistakes like that. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST Date: 22 Jun 14 - 08:05 PM Change of the entire damned system, more like, from Manager to most players - after reducing salaries to something affordable. Low basic, performance bonuses? Which brings me to another question: does failure on the pitch affect funding for the sport? |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Jun 14 - 09:31 PM guest - you are living in an alternative universe, enjoy it! must be terrific fun! |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Bill D Date: 22 Jun 14 - 11:55 PM Ebbie... when American 'football' was new, there was a lot more kicking involved- hence the name. Then there needed to be some other name for that game which few Americans played. It doesn't have to make sense... but at least everyone knows what game 'soccer' refers to. |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: Ebbie Date: 23 Jun 14 - 01:18 AM I could look it up but what does 'Association football' refer to? Why "association"? |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: The Sandman Date: 23 Jun 14 - 01:28 AM Argentina might win |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: MGM·Lion Date: 23 Jun 14 - 01:56 AM Ebbie - "The Laws of the Game were originally codified in England by The Football Association in 1863" -- Wikipedia Governing body still called the FA in England, SFA in Scotland, which has now extended to bodies like UEFA [European FA] & FIFA [worldwide Federation International de FAs]. Used particularly to distinguish from Rugby Football, a handling game with an oval ball. These days, pundits will refer to "Rugby or football", the latter meaning Soccer [which of course derives from 'association'], which strictly is incorrect, as they are both forms of football, & have the word in their names. But I have found it useless to protest ["MGM, your pedantry is legendary!" a friend once wrote in a post]; that's the way the language has gone, and even old King-Canute-MGM has failed to stem the tide... ❤~M~❤ |

Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,LK867 Date: 23 Jun 14 - 04:45 AM Michael, there have been a shortage of rising stars in this tournament unlike previous years, still hard to say who will lift the trophy, who do you fancy ? |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: MGM·Lion Date: 23 Jun 14 - 05:05 AM Well, it was Germany till Ghana drew with them. My wife Emma fancies France, and I am coming to agree with her... But time will tell! ~M~ |
Subject: RE: BS: World Cup From: GUEST,gnuonlaptop Date: 23 Jun 14 - 02:02 PM Oz played VERY well for 30, then well, then very well... on pressing and offense... Spain took advantage when opportunities arose. I was impressed with the young Oz team. And Robben? Wow! That old man left men near half his age in his dust (yeah.... I got 2 TVs side by each). Two mores games in an hour. Must try to do sommat productive until then. |
