Apologies guest, Allan and all: serious mistake on my part. For some reason I can't explain, I thought Uruguay's population was larger and Glasgow's smaller than they respectively are. The Glasgow population was Britain's second largest in my infancy (but not as big as Uruguay's). I see now that it has dwindled to half its former size thanks to boundary changes, resettlement to surrounding tow,ns etc.

Uruguay is still the smallest country in the tournament, by population.

No penalty shot given to Costa Rica and then Italy gets 2.5 obvious bad calls for free kicks? I absolutely LOVED the goal before half time yet I still want Italy as England's prospects (once again, as understand it, hinge upon such a win). That goal was from God as a smite for the ungiven penalty shot. >;-) In any case, it's and exciting game... sorry if I disturbed anyone with my loud response to the beeeeeautiful goal.

Well, there's England out. Seve us right, the rubbish qe had been playing. Italy too, probably, if they go on playing as ineptly as that. Thought they were sleepwalking.

Anyone ever seen a worse display of refereeing ~~ if that travesty could be dignified by the name? Emma and I decided he must be an impostor who had locked the real ref in the loo & hired the costume at a joke shop...

½-hr later & still fulminating inwardly about that great big booby running about masquerading as a referee. Not even as if he could have been got at by either side. He spread his ineptitude with absolute impartiality both ways. Blatant yellow cards overlooked [the only one he gave was for sod-all to the wrong man], 2 obvious penalties missed ~~~

Ahhh. So I wasn't the only one who thought the ref was a total you-know-what. I sometimes wonder due to my limited knowledge but that display of ineptitude was obvious to even me. Of course, no matter now. Done deal. Let's see what the French and Swiss are up to. Got the rest of me bugs cracked just in time and the ale is cold.

I never progressed past the school team but I enjoyed running down the left wing before I discovered girls and booze

I spent a lot of time at scrum half or stand off (fly half) and never discovered any girls or booze there.

I didn't discover many girls as a tight head prop for that matter. Got my balls squeezed a few times though and I am convinced either a second row or number 8 has carnal knowledge of me.

I discovered the booze back at the clubhouse. I am completely out of touch with them but I may still hold the Worksop Rugby Club record for the dance of the flaming arseholes. Less than two inches. When one of the Peach twins tried to beat it he ended up explaining himself in A &E.

In this bloke's case, it was just a very sore skin and not as hairy an arse as before. A a fashion item, it is sure cheaper than anal bleaching, if truth be known. I contend that my record stood on account of having a hairier arse than most, protecting the skin more.

My record was with a rolled up copy The Daily M*il, and I remain grateful to Mr Dacre and his motley crew.

I think Al may be referring to scorching a Tudor rose onto a whitewash wall. I never tried it to be fair. I do know that it must be an old fashioned whitewash wall though, as more modern rendering is more heatproof and the scorch mark doesn't show.

Anyway,

I agree with some of your comments about Gerrard. He has never produced consistent top form for England. Great club player and OK he made a mistake that may have lost Liverpool the League but he had a great season otherwise.

As a captain he does not appear to be able to organize his team once they are on the pitch. Unlike John Terry and Rio Ferdinand who got left behind he does not inspire and marshall the defence.
INHO if either or both had been playing against Uruguay we would not have gone gung-ho for the win after we had equalised.

Actually he was penalised on two occasions. One for the Chelsea Branislav Ivanovic incident; the other was in Holland when he was playing for Ajax against PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal. He never played for Ajax again. Maybe we should have taken the same steps ?? !!

Well. That was quite a game. Felt bad for the Iranian keeperin the first of 4 minutes added. The lad did a great job all game and there were many saves. Then, heartbreak at the end. They fielded a good team. I was impressed. Now it's time to cheer for the Mainland English. >;-)

For once I actually felt sorry for Rooney and thought for once he showed humility when facing the press. Too be fair whoever Hodgson would have picked for his team whether it be younger players or the usual faithful old timers if the same failure had occurred he would have still been slammed for it no matter what he decided to do. Change of manager perhaps I don't know. I really thought that his constant support for his players would have made a difference.
