He was one of the best American authors with a low recognition factor. He is known probably more for the cinematic version of 'Little Big Man' than for his book, which I read sometime after I saw the movie and loved even more than the movie. He returned to his character Jack Crabb in 1999 for 'The Return of Little Big Man', another good book. Probably Dustin Hoffman was too old by then to play the 'young' Crabb.

Thomas Berger wrote many other books and they are of a high quality. I pledge to read more of them.

Good movie - great book. I didn't know about the sequel. I'll look for it.

Little Big Man was Crazy Horse's lieutenant and threatened to kill the Black Hills Commissioners. However, after surrendering along with Crazy Horse, he switched allegiance and was directly involved with Crazy Horse's death by assisting in pinning his arms. It was said the Little Big Man was crafty, but with considerable ability and presence, while being a recognized trouble maker. Crazy Horse's last words, uttered to Little Big Man and others after he was bayoneted by a soldier, were "Let me go, my friends. You have got me hurt enough."

That wasn't Berger's character, who is a white boy who lived among the Cheyenne. I had breakfast with Mr. Berger, by accident, when I was in college. He'd spoken to the students the night before, stayed the night somewhere on campus and had breakfast in the cafeteria the next day. I think I was the only woman at the table. I don't think Mr. Berger thought much of women. His generation mostly didn't. I did read
"Little Big Man" It was an interesting book. But fiction, not fact.
