Subject: RE: BS: Winter Comfort Food From: Rapparee Date: 02 Nov 14 - 12:10 PM Weeellll...I got the recipe from the Frugal Chef's cookbook. He was from Seattle. Oh, it helps to warm the milk slightly before putting it in. I've had biscuits and gravy from Maine to California and from Northern Montana to the Deep, Deep, South. They were a staple in Western Central Illinois where I grew up, as much as I ever did. They were served from chuckwagons and can be a quick and simple meal in hunting or other camps. I'll give y'all the recipe for Super SOS when I can. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter Comfort Food From: Ed T Date: 02 Nov 14 - 12:46 PM Most "winter food" is likely not considered health food by such enthusiasts. A corned beef dinner, ( or the related Jigg's Dinner) the salt fish dinner, and also (cod or haddock) fish cakes are true winter "comfy" food where I grew up. Jigg's Dinner |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter Comfort Food From: GUEST,sciencegeek Date: 03 Nov 14 - 09:13 AM came back last night from a fun music weekend... to find several inches of snow coating our hill... grrrr & brrr I am soooo ready for hot comfort food! :D as for ramps... they put up seed heads, but I've yet to have the seeds germinate. They also spread by dividing at the bulb. I usually just pick one or two leaves & let the plant remain to regenerate. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter Comfort Food From: GUEST,sciencegeek Date: 03 Nov 14 - 10:06 AM Ramps: what you eat when you want to be alone. ... LOL Hubby's dad was a teacher and later prinicpal... every spring he'd have at least one student who figured out how to sent home... doesn't matter if cooked or raw... always thought it would be useful when hunting to mask the smell of the gun & hunter... that said, the leaves are so tasty it's worth it... down south they hold ramps dinners... ham & ramps & potato... if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter Comfort Food From: Musket Date: 03 Nov 14 - 12:09 PM Mrs Musket occasionally makes Jiggs Dinner. Not known as a dish as such over here but she did her elective as a medical student in St Johns and the family she boarded with introduced her to it. Regarding corned beef, I make corned beef and potato patties, dimple in the top and coddle an egg in them. Chill them and have them as a snack. Yum. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter Comfort Food From: GUEST,Mrr Date: 03 Nov 14 - 05:54 PM Thanks about the kidney beans. I was tasting chili and they weren't done yet and then I remembered that mystery where there was non-murder by kidney bean and got worried. Egg noodles are a must for winter soups. The very thin noodles are for summer broths. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter Comfort Food From: Janie Date: 03 Nov 14 - 07:45 PM I remember the issue of The West Virginia Hillbilly that arrived in our mailbox, a good 100 miles away from the original scene of the crime, reeking of ramps. They really are good eats, btw. I have been known to make special trips back home to West Virginia for notable ramp festivals. (They are an early spring phenomena, btw. |
