I recently went on two cruises with Cruise And Maritime Voyages, a UK -based cruise line. They have a penchant for operating "old fashioned" and "traditional" vessels ,which obviously appeal to the older generation, BUT I was somewhat surprised to discover that their latest acquisition , the cruise-ship MV Azores , which makes its" maiden voyage " early next year , is ,in fact , the "Stockholm" , laid down in 1944 , launched in 1946, and still going strong after nearly 70 years.
Of course, she is famous (or infamous) for having collided with ,and sunk, the liner Andrea Doria off Nantucket in 1956 ,with the loss of lives on both ships (certainly 5 crew-members of Stockholm).I gather that she was rebuilt from the waterline up some time after the collision (for which Italy blamed her )but the idea of going on a cruise aboard the MV Azores seems a little unsettling now, somehow ! However , CMV DO have some GREAT "Special Offers" ,which is why Nicola ,also aged 70, and I have been able ,in the last month,to visit Bristol,Falmouth,Honfleur,Antwerpen,Amsterdam,Liverpool,Madeira,Portimao,Lagos, Lisbon and Estoril , on two different ships (Discovery and Funchal ); so I guess we'll go !!

Well, it's already done its sinking so it should be safer than another ship, right? Back in the decades posted in Cote d'Ivoire, going Stateside for home leave and back overseas and to Europe for R&R and back home to Cote d'Ivoire and so on, we always felt (guiltily!) safer if there was a plane crash the weeks before we had to travel... this kind of went away as more crashes were terrorism and fewer were accidents but still. You should be fine.

Each flight or cruise has its own risk factor -- they're not additive. So if you've flown or cruised 50,000,000 miles the next flight or cruise starts the risk anew. Besides, the Andrea Doria ain't no more.

Have a good cruise.
