Hello,

I would like to tell about youtube channel I have: Link
where I upload folk records, and some of them have songs that where not available on the internet before,
so I thought that some people would like to know about it.

I am not doing this for any money or profit, just to make people happy and to share some great rare songs.

Have a nice day!

I don't want to be the fly in the punch bowl but I'm curious, are the artists involved getting any royalties from these uploads? Some of these recordings have been reissued on CD. Just asking.

At least one of the people responding here with encouragement has torn strips off several people in the past for posting links to sites that had similar content (ie copies of older recordings posted on-line without obvious permission). Funny how that works.

I don't really know how youtube works in that way, all I know is that I am not getting paid to do it and I paid for all of the records I upload. For me it is all about the enjoyment of the music and to share it with others, so as long as the content is not taken down or anything I won't question it.

When you buy albums they are for your personal use. If you buy a movie meant for home viewing and then rent a theater and show it to people, free or for a fee, you're breaking the law. The same is true for distributing copies of records you own. That is the issue to sort out - if you distribute it for free, then the artist doesn't receive compensation. If the artist complains, your posts of their material will be removed. If entities representing recording artists decide to take issue, it can get expensive. In a hurry.

Most artists I upload records of past away so I don't think they will complain soon, but I understand that music labels can. If they are going to complain I will take it seriously, but for the time they don't I will continue doing this.

I don't know if the following thing is anything of an argument, more something to think about, but if I buy a record from any sort of place that sells them none of it will go to the original artist either.

Edit: Now I looked at them again I realise that most of the groups still have some living members, sorry about that.

I don't think it matters if the recording artists are still alive or not. Someone will own the rights to the recordings and they are, legally speaking, not yours to put on-line. At the end of the day it's up to yourself to decide what you feel is the right thing to do, you wouldn't be the fist or only one to upload material that isn't yours to upload.

I think the owner needs to complain. Then Youtube give a warning. If there's a second complaint then they say they'll delete the account. Unlikely to happen though I suppose the more content on a site then the bigger chance of it happening

I am aware that what I am doing might not be very legal,
but since I started doing this a few people have thanked me
and have great memories of the records I upload and that is what
I do it for. If youtube will take it down one day I still made those
people happy for the moment it was available.

I don't think anyone on here is having a go Jessica. It is a good site. They're just talking about the legal ins and outs. Basically we as youngsters all used to tape each others albums. Everyone knew it was illegal but no-one bothered. It is just done on a bigger scale and in a less private fashion now!

I was watching a programme on I-Player which was Iggy Pop giving a lecture on how people listen to music now and the music business in general. Iggy was talking about how certain managers and record companies had ripped musicians off. Bernard Sumner of New Order piped up that people getting their music for free now were also thieves and ripping musicians off. Iggy didn't agree with him or at least was less damning.

Anyway I thought to myself "Sumner surely you put albums on cassette tapes too?" and besides i know who the rip off merchant is. We did a 100 mile round trip to see New Order in their early days just to discover that they couldn't really play, he couldn't sing a note in tune, and they walked off after 20 minutes swearing at the audience!!! :-)
