This is the first verse and chorus of a song I've known for a long, long time. But I've forgotten who wrote it.
I can't find it in the digitrad or forum.

Lots of bells ringing !! Guyanese songwriter from the early days of the Folk Revival ! Other that that my brain is too faded .

I once saw David perform at a folk music club in Liverpool UK in the 1960s.
He was very impressive. Had the audience in the palm of his hand..as they say.

Cheers all.   That's the name I was looking for.
I didn't know he was Guyanese.    From the words of the song I presumed he was American.
