La Bottine Souriante is probably the most famous Quebec trad group, but I have never bought any of their records. Can anyone direct me to the best of their albums?

You have great taste! A couple of years ago, the great Sharon Shannon told me that La Bottine was her favorite band as well... she did a bunch of their tunes in concert in New York, for my wife and I... I tend to like their early stuff the best... On the album, y a ben du changement I think youll like trinque l-amourette (sorry my apostrophy does not work in this program for some reason) and le manifeste d-un vieux d-oies. On the albumJe voudrais changer d-chapeau, you may like la brunette est la and the great reel that follows it, le reel des quarte fers en l-air, belle virginie and les filles de la rochelle. They have another song, le zigulon, that I like, Ill look up the album for you. If you like La Bottine, you may like a band from Prince Edward Island, Barachois - they are very good as well. One of my all time faves as well. Especially their version of "La rille du porc-au-pique" (if I spelled that correctly.) A few years ago, CBC flew La Bottine Souriante to Toronto to jam with a brass band from there (I forget the name of that group). Neither group uses drums; La Bottine Souriante use their feet for rhythm, Quebec-style (toc-a-toc, toc-a-toc,etc.) Although the two groups knew of each other, they had never met, if I remember correctly. They were allowed to practice for less than a day if I remember correctly. Then CBC rolled the cameras and broadcast the results. WOW!

Great Band, I agree whole heartedly. I'm wondering if any of you can help me. I'd like to learn a few of the previously mentioned songs, but they don't appear to believe in putting lyrics with their recordings. Would anyone have any idea were some of those lyrics might be available, particularly ziguezon. If there is a book or publication of any kind, I don't have a problem paying.

They played live here in Toronto about a month ago. Two dates, one at the CBC's Glenn Gould theatre and one at a downtown bar. They were astonishing live although some of my more traditionally inclined friends liked them better before the brass section joined them permanently. They are currently on tour in Europe and their tour schedule is available on-line. (Sorry I don't have a blue clickie thingie on my computer. Maybe I'll get one with my next hardware upgrade.)

En Specticle is the one. It covers a range of stuff they have played over the years and great tunes, why have you got none!!!!

Sorry, Sam and others; I'd recommend La Mistrine over En Specticle any day; "Specs" was a distinct disappointment. And to try to justify that . . I'd pick up on Michael Miland's comments about the brass. As I understand it (and as my ears tell me), La Mistrine is where they'd really worked up a set featuring an extended brass section, essentially serving a "traditional" sound. To me "En Specticle" doesn't have the same edge and freshness - I suspect because the material has been RE-worked. And since then the brass have had a stronger influence on the overall sound of the band, giving them a more jazzy sound which I like somewhat less.

Just my 2p.

And anyone who particularly loves the way brass is used to augment traditional music on La Mistrine should also listen to Home Service's "Alright Jack" CD, which does the same sort of thing to UK folk (and UK folk as arranged by Percy Grainger with vocals reclaimed by Home Service).

The only La Bottine CD I have is En Spectacle. (Ifound it in a used bin for$6!) When I saw them in '97, they sold out of CDs before I could get back to their merchandise booth. En Spectacle is incredible! I also recommend the trio of Bourque, Bernard and Lepage's debut release "Matapat"

I second SBPWDKAB's recommendation of Bourque, Bernard and Lepage. We had them at the Dayton (OH) Folk Festival this summer and I got to see and hear them live. They're young, talented and full of energy, but have a nice spare sound as just a trio. Benoit Bourque was in Ad Vielle Que Porra.

I must confess that I don't like La Bottine as much after they've added the brass section. My two favorite older albums are "Chic 'n swell" and "Je voudrais changer d-chapeau".

Another Quebecois duo that I got to hear while working on the Washington Irish Festival were a pair of brothers, Le Freres Brunet. Both were right around 20 years old, playing fiddle and guitar, or sometimes 2 fiddles. They were fantastic! I don't know if they have any recordings, but I'd buy one in a flash if I saw one.
