I think I've it figured out: The people who loved Palin are the ones who now love Trump. It is just that they have more hope now because Trump is louder and even less self-disciplined, and they believe the bulldozer approach will work. But it's the same people. Trust me.

I almost typed 'Hilarious'....except she isn't hilarious, either...'pathetic' is a closer adjective.

I was once criticized for spelling it with two 'L's...and told it was one...so I checked...this time it's two....and I wasn't trying to 'insult' her....just calling it the way it is!
She's a lying sack of shit!

Acme, Mrs Clinton has a dreadful record in Foreign Policy.....surely the Democrats can come up with someone better, especially at this extremely dangerous juncture.

Sanity is being rather outspoken, but has history on his side.
Seems to me she would be better suited to representing the Republicans.   I think it MUST be the electability factor, surely the US electorate are not that naïve?

You know the main reason why you insist that Hillary Clinton is such a liar? It is because certain members of the media say so. Do a little homework for a change. A refreshing change.

Ake, you're in the UK and I'm in the US. And you're telling me about Hillary Clinton's record? Filtered through what yellow news media? History isn't on Gust's side. Look into the charges - they hold no water. But Gust would hope, as you apparently do, that if political fiction is repeated often enough it becomes true.

No fiction Acme, I watched her speeches on Libya, pushing a reluctant President to take action. Watched her push for war in Iraq.....I do not think she is stupid, I think she is power hungry....the "dynasty thing"
I have read many of her articles, in fact I study politics rather closely.
I would guess that I have a better insight into Mrs Clinton's MO than the typical American, just as I would expect you to have a better understanding of UK politics than the average Brit.

As Greg F did not say: Horse pucky. Of course you say that, because it is your opinion. However, your opinion is just that: your opinion. Your opinion and a US dollar in some cities will get you a bus ride.

Pardon me- but the situation in Paris is grievous. So, just for decency's sake, hold your tongue.

Besides, "What difference does it make!?!?".--Hillary Clinton (at a very animated moment, during the Benghazi hearings) when pressed on the fabricated story she was peddling to the American people about the video vs. an attack....I assume you know about it.....and just don't care.

and it matters to me, because the UK is tied to US Foreign Policy.

From what I have read lately, there is no comparison between Mr Sanders and Mrs Clinton.....centre left people should ALL be voting for Sanders.
In the UK the Labour party has a real socialist as leader, elected in a landslide by the party membership.....The Parliamentary Labour MPs are for the most part self serving hypocrites in the mould of Tony Blair......the party membership(the rank and file) want a rather mild form of socialism to combat the austerity agenda of the tories.
The sitting MPs don't want anything to do with socialism as they think it will make Labour unelectable.
Mr Corbyn(the leader) seems to be working to educate the electorate, to explain what socialism really means and he knows that it will take a decade or more for change to happen. Sometime "electability" is meaningless if people don't know what the labels they vote for signify
Politics should not be about jobs for the boys and girls who toe the line, it should be about principles and constructing a fairer society

If GfS can't spell Hillary, then what price the Scottish specimen who can't even spell his own moniker?

In Scotland, you have it easy. A party decided to treat everybody equally, came to power in your devolved government where The UK government wipes your ass anyway and to the surprise of many, turned out to be good for all, even if they can't afford it.

The SNP introduced marriage for all, regardless of gender. It stated recently to have gender equality on boards of public sector bodies. It has cruel sports with animals in its sights and it enjoys the prosperity and jobs that UK allows it to have through Trident.

Don't confuse your utopia with the stain we call US politics.

It certainly looks as though Americans are going to be faced with a pretty depressing choice next year. Of course if Trump ends up as the Republican candidate, it'd be not just depressing, but terrifying, and not just for Americans. He'd make Dubya look quite tolerable in retrospect.

It seems Trump is the testosterone-fueled version of Palin ...witness his mini temper-tantrum the other day in Iowa when he railed "how stupid can the people of Iowa be?" (addressing a group of Iowans in Iowa) because he's lost some ground to Ben Carson in that state (do you suppose his campaign advisors just threw in the towel at that point?...oh to be a fly on the wall when they met afterwards ..."This guy is a loose cannon! We can't do anything with him.." --or thereabouts). It was Trump's version of Palin's "I can see Russia from my window" profound observation....

Kudos to Fox Business channel the other night during the debate for actually directing some substantive questions towards the candidates regarding the economy, banking, trade...stuff you would expect from a business-oriented news organization-- and a telling moment when a couple other candidates got deep in the weeds arguing the finer points of some policy issue: dead silence from Carson and Trump ...a telling moment since neither Trump nor Carson has studied the issues enough to comment no further than to mouth some simple-minded platitudes aimed at pleasing the low-info voter. "Let's make America great again!" (through ignorance of the issues) ...

Sen. Rand Paul gets the debate award for making Trump look like an amateur on trade policy after Trump was asked his opinion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement and Trump plays his China-bashing card (which reads, more or less, "China is bad. They don't play fair. They beat me up on the playground and took my lunch money away."). Paul: "Ummm... I think we should point out that China is not part of this deal..."   ..this from the senator from Kentucky and home-perm cautionary tale (as Stephen Colbert described him) Rand Paul...(did Trump later tweet that Rand Paul's mother wears army boots...or some other clever come-back?).

Trump will probably declare all Americans dumb as a box of hammers when the nomination goes to some other candidate. As retribution he will threaten to buy all the states who caused him to lose and turn them into golf courses.

Actually, pointing out that Alaska is right next to Russia was quite a valid point to make. I suspect there might actually be a fair number of Americans who weren't actually aware of the fact. (Not just Americans, quite possibly a good few Russians.)

Perhaps before he calls the moderators he at least gets the nationality of a person posting right. Never mind who he would like the person to be.

As I said, Scotland is a model that those who worry about the Republican v Democrat circus may take heart from. You do it a state legislature at a time regardless of White House incumbent and if your party captures the imagination of the people, then your grass root movement could either alter the main party lines or provide an alternative.

The people of Scotland were fed up with sectarian lines, bigotry and the national government taking them for granted. The SNP promised a liberal inclusive local government and they have been true to their word, reflecting what people wanted. Public services, equality and inclusiveness. They tackled bigoted opposition to gay marriage, promote gender equality in the board room, try to protect front line public services and stick to their motto "prosperity through equality."

Nobody ever said a level playing field brings results but it's a start... Compare that to the GOP candidates.

Lost our chance to elect a narcissistic dunce who resigned half way through her first and only term as guv to sign a lucrative contract to host a reality TV show and to avoid an investigation into her use of state employees to pursue a vendetta against a private individual. ...yeah but seeing Russia from your window does not make a person knowledgeable on foreign policy as it relates to the US-Russia relationship, just as being about 90 miles from Cuba doesn't make the residents of Miami, Florida experts on the Castro regime, just as being able to bash China because of some of their trade policies doesn't make Trump knowledgeable on the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement...which was the point.

No, it doesn't make any difference either way, but it wa a fair point to make, to remind people of the fact we live on a globe, not a flat Mrrcator map world.

Like the trick question, which states on the USA are furthest East and furthest West? And the answer to both is Alaska.

Just to keep the record straight, Palin never claimed to be able to see Russia from her home. That was Tina Fey in her impersonation of Palin.

In reality, Russia and Alaska are their closest to each other at a certain point across the Bering Strait, a good many miles up-coast. The islands, Little Diomede (American) and Big Diomede (Russian) are fewer than three miles apart, and therefore visible to each other.

I think media has run away with the show as it were. Key at this point is to keep track of them and always avoid stupid people in groups :-)

Hmmm..... better to avoid "clever" politicians singly OR in groups #.

Seriously, I'm not sure that being "university educated" is a positive when looking for a political leader.

They need that special ingredient the ability to inspire trust, the common touch, unshakable belief in themselves and the ability to persuade large numbers of people to their cause
This would especially apply to someone who wished to make great changes in society..

Think Bill Clinton. You may not have liked him if you're a conservative, but he has charisma, charm, and is smart. He has feet of clay, but he was one excellent politician. Having not only a college degree but advanced degrees gave him the tools to do the job.

Palin couldn't stay put in one college, she jumped around until someone finally let her graduate, probably making her sign a form saying that if they let her graduate with a BA she would not torment any other institutions of higher education in her "pursuit" of education.

I did not see Bill Clinton as an inspirational leader, although he did have a sleazy charm.....an excellent politician? I suppose Tony Blair was also "an excellent politician"........not exactly a compliment. Both were crooks, devious self serving and completely immoral, egos adrift.

No particular benefit to society.

I suspect that Acme is right- they finally let Palin graduate. From her 5th college, if I recall correctly. She got -not necessarily, earned - a degree in journalism. Not sure what she learned from it.

I don't think of Bill Clinton as having had "a sleazy charm". The man, I think, does have empathy with people. It is too bad that his own little demons were not contained.

I think what we're facing is a world-wide awakening of sorts wherein people are choosing between degrees of authoritarianism and governments that are responsible to the electorate (which is after all what responsible government means).

There is a fundamental difference between the views held by Conservatives/Republicans and those held by Socialists/Liberals that seems to dance between how labour is perceived and whether humans are simply a source of capital. We've seen the beginning of a Conservative return-to-the-drawing-board regarding their philosophy in Canada, but the country has been left in such a deplorable mess after nine years of Conservative corruption that the incoming Liberals have a big pile of doodoo to clean up, and they will be held accountable come the next election in 2019.

I think it likely that Republicans will have to face the fact they do not know what they're doing and let a more rational group of people govern. Who that rational group is will be decided in your (the USA's) next federal election. The voice of the Republicans is out of proportion to its worth. They simply own more media, and that's where today's connected world gets its information from. I doubt the Republican popular vote will exceed 43% simply because Americans are not as stupid as their media shows them to be or tries to convince them they are. Time will tell.
