Subject: RE: Are there any Folk Clubs in Hong Kong From: Leadfingers Date: 23 Feb 16 - 05:17 AM I was entertaining in a bar in Kowloon in 1974/75 , and met a few local Chinese singers in the contemporary idiom - Bob Dylan , Paul Simon etc . With the Regime change , they probably had no market and would be old men now . Sammy Ho and Bosco Whai , where are yo now ? |

Subject: RE: Are there any Folk Clubs in Hong Kong From: Mr Red Date: 22 Feb 16 - 03:07 AM See if Hardy's Folk Club is still an entity. Basically it was a bar with music, but I did a floor spot. I suspect after 28 year - not. At the time there was a regular monthly thing in the British Embassy or consulate or maybe it was the High Commission, I wasn't there at the right time. What I did see was a Night Street Market in Kowloon (Maybe Jordan Street?) and amongst the traders was a stall with performers doing traditional Chinese Music/Singing. And in a kiddies' play area a lot of gambling going on. An experience, particularly if you are trying to tire yourself so that you can get some sleep eventually. |

Subject: RE: Are there any Folk Clubs in Hong Kong From: Jack Campin Date: 21 Feb 16 - 09:03 AM I would guess any Anglophone residents are most likely to be young people there to make a lot of money and with no connection to the British folk scene. You might get luckier finding places to listen to Chinese music, but it's unlikely to be publicized conveniently for visitors. Do you want me to ask? There is a Chinese traditional music event coming up in Scotland shortly, but the publicity is all on Facebook so I haven't tried to find out more. |
Subject: RE: Are there any Folk Clubs in Hong Kong From: GUEST Date: 20 Feb 16 - 11:40 AM That's a disappointment. CHeers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Are there any Folk Clubs in Hong Kong From: bubblyrat Date: 19 Feb 16 - 06:58 AM I doubt it ; not in the past, anyway. We ( the Guiness Grenadiers" from HMS Eagle ) played there in 1968, but not in a "folk club" per se ; rather in the Jardine Matheson building, where we recorded for Radio Hong Kong.Of course, Singapore was a treasure trove of clubs and musicians ( think Terry Silver "leadfingers"---Tom Lewis---Johnny Collins ---even Los Trios Paraguayos on one occasion !) But with the withdrawal of British forces, I imaine that little remains of BMH, Tengah,Changi, or Seletar , all thriving Folk Clubs in days gone by . |
Subject: Are there any Folk Clubs in Hong Kong From: Bugsy Date: 19 Feb 16 - 01:50 AM Mrs Bugsy and I are heading over to Hong Kong in April for a weeks holiday. Does anyone know if there are any folk clubs still operating there? CHeers Bugsy |
