You can find a recording of this song on the twenty-fifth anniversary album by the Wolf Tones. I don't have the CD handy at the moment, but I can get the lyrics for you off the tape I have of it. I'll e-mail them to you from home tonight. I like the song too, and I'd rather have them in print, But I can't locate them through the net either. It's a popular song here in KC, with the Irish community.

This song and 199 other fine examples are published on a combo tape (sampler)and book published by Soodlum (in Ireland or UK) 100 Favourite Irish Songs Vol 1 and 2. There is a similar collection for Scottish songs. All contain lyrics, music notation, guitar chords and a musical sample of at least the first verse and chorus.

I have searched high and low for mine but cannot find.

In relation to an earlier thread for :Limerick You're a Lady", I believe that this also appears in this collection of both traditional and more contemporary songs.

That’s from memory, so any mistakes, please feel free to correct, and also, it is often sung as a sort of rowdy fight song, which takes away from the meaning, of what I have to remember, thinking of when I first heard it, is a meaningful and lovely song, so please! Try it once, as a softer, more - listen to this, kind of a song, Just once for your old pal in the one Big Union, eh?

I have it by the Wolfe Tones, and it isn't in the Trad nor could I find a thread about it... can anyone fill the little holes in the lyrics? Also, feel free to correct lyrics throughout... I'm making vaguely educated guesses.

Found the old thread. It has a mistake or three, but here are some of the words needed: Chorus, line 7: But when men CLAIM Ireland's freedom, 2nd verse: It was the uniform being worn BY me father long ago, When he reached--- It was the uniform me father wore in that little church--, When OUL' Father Mike ---. Next to last line: And when they bore his body "down the rugged heather braes", they placed---. I have corrected old to oul, and I am not happy with the thread's "the rugged heather braes." Perhaps the word down should be through. I will check my cd (Wolfe Tones "Rifles of the IRA") when I get a chance.

Mrrzy, I found it on "Live alive-oh!, not the "Rifles." "It's just a broad black brimmer, WITH ITS (said very fast) ribbons frayed and torn", is the first line of the chorus. It is CLAIM in the 7th line. In the 1st verse, 3rd line, it is "with feathered PLUME." In line 6, "It's a memory of" rather than In Memory of. Second verse 1st line is "It was the uniform being worn by me father long ago When he reached ..." You are right, "It was the uniform being worn in that little church..." It sounds like "OLD Father Mike" rather than "oul" as in the thread. The next to last line of the 2nd verse still bothers me. It sounds like "And when they bore his body down that rugged meadow braes" which doesn't sound right. Sorry, my ears can't pick up that last one.
