Subject: RE: broad blck brimmer From: waltersl@cctr.umkc.edu Date: 21 May 97 - 11:26 AM You can find a recording of this song on the twenty-fifth anniversary album by the Wolf Tones. I don't have the CD handy at the moment, but I can get the lyrics for you off the tape I have of it. I'll e-mail them to you from home tonight. I like the song too, and I'd rather have them in print, But I can't locate them through the net either. It's a popular song here in KC, with the Irish community. Leslie |
Subject: RE: broad blck brimmer From: John Date: 22 May 97 - 12:27 AM This song and 199 other fine examples are published on a combo tape (sampler)and book published by Soodlum (in Ireland or UK) 100 Favourite Irish Songs Vol 1 and 2. There is a similar collection for Scottish songs. All contain lyrics, music notation, guitar chords and a musical sample of at least the first verse and chorus. I have searched high and low for mine but cannot find. In relation to an earlier thread for :Limerick You're a Lady", I believe that this also appears in this collection of both traditional and more contemporary songs. Whoops - have you checked the DT? Subject: lyr req - broad black brimmer - irish From: jmayres Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:06 PM looking for lyrics to Broad Black Brimmer, an IRA song, I think. "It's just a broad, black brimmer with the ribbons frayed and torn, by the carelessness of many a mountain breeze", etc. Thanks! |

Subject: Lyr Add: BROAD BLACK BRIMMER From: InOBU Date: 09 Dec 99 - 02:13 PM There’s a uniform hanging in what’s known as father’s room, A uniform so simple in its style. It has no braid of silk nor gold, nor hat with feathered plume, But me mother has preserved it all the while. One day she made me try it on, a wish of mine for years, “Just in memory of your father, Sean,” she said, And as I tried the Sam Brown on, she was smiling through her tears As she placed the broad black brimmer on me head. It’s just a broad black brimmer, its ribbons frayed and torn By the carelessness of many's a mountain breeze, An old trench coat that’s all battle stained and worn, And the breaches almost threadbare at the knees, A Sam Brown belt, with a buckle, big and strong, And a holster that’s been empty many's the day, And when men claim Ireland’s freedom The ones they choose to lead 'em Will wear the broad black brimmer of the IRA. That Uniform was worn by my father long ago When he reached me mother’s homestead on the run. That uniform was worn in the little church below When father Mac, he blessed the pair as one. And after truce and treaty, and the parting of the ways, He wore it when he marched out with the rest, And as they bore his body down the rugged heather brays, They placed the broad black brimmer on his head. It’s just a...etc. That’s from memory, so any mistakes, please feel free to correct, and also, it is often sung as a sort of rowdy fight song, which takes away from the meaning, of what I have to remember, thinking of when I first heard it, is a meaningful and lovely song, so please! Try it once, as a softer, more - listen to this, kind of a song, Just once for your old pal in the one Big Union, eh? Larry |

Subject: Lyr Add: BROAD BLACK BRIMMER (Wolfe Tones version) From: Mrrzy Date: 08 Jun 01 - 11:19 AM I have it by the Wolfe Tones, and it isn't in the Trad nor could I find a thread about it... can anyone fill the little holes in the lyrics? Also, feel free to correct lyrics throughout... I'm making vaguely educated guesses. Thanks! BROAD BLACK BRIMMER The Wolfe Tones' version as remembered by Mrrzy Anything in parens is shouted by the band; the rest is sung by the lead singer. Chorus: |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Broad Black Brimmer From: Mrrzy Date: 08 Jun 01 - 11:20 AM I should have said any WORDS in parens are shouted. Ellipses in parens are the missing lyrics... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Broad Black Brimmer From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 08 Jun 01 - 11:25 AM If you put "brimmer" in the forum search box you'll get links to versions posted by Big Mick and Larry (InObu). I don't know if these are the right versions. RtS (Ignorance is bliss, that's why I'm smiling) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Broad Black Brimmer From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 08 Jun 01 - 04:33 PM Found the old thread. It has a mistake or three, but here are some of the words needed: Chorus, line 7: But when men CLAIM Ireland's freedom, 2nd verse: It was the uniform being worn BY me father long ago, When he reached--- It was the uniform me father wore in that little church--, When OUL' Father Mike ---. Next to last line: And when they bore his body "down the rugged heather braes", they placed---. I have corrected old to oul, and I am not happy with the thread's "the rugged heather braes." Perhaps the word down should be through. I will check my cd (Wolfe Tones "Rifles of the IRA") when I get a chance. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Broad Black Brimmer From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 08 Jun 01 - 06:12 PM Mrrzy, I found it on "Live alive-oh!, not the "Rifles." "It's just a broad black brimmer, WITH ITS (said very fast) ribbons frayed and torn", is the first line of the chorus. It is CLAIM in the 7th line. In the 1st verse, 3rd line, it is "with feathered PLUME." In line 6, "It's a memory of" rather than In Memory of. Second verse 1st line is "It was the uniform being worn by me father long ago When he reached ..." You are right, "It was the uniform being worn in that little church..." It sounds like "OLD Father Mike" rather than "oul" as in the thread. The next to last line of the 2nd verse still bothers me. It sounds like "And when they bore his body down that rugged meadow braes" which doesn't sound right. Sorry, my ears can't pick up that last one. |
