Subject: The Mudcat Barn
From: Allan C.
Date: 07 Dec 99 - 07:02 PM

Y'all gitchersel's ovah heyah ta th' other side o' th' horse stall wheah ah kin see yer faces in th' light o' th' lantern.

Okay, that's about as long as I can keep up the accent. We don't all sound like that, you know.

Now if you take a look around, you'll find that this is not only an incredibly big barn, but it is also outfitted with things you wouldn't normally expect to find. I mean, look at that hand hewn counter top that was built over where that hay rake is parked. That thing is plumb handsome! And behind it is a former tack room which is now fully outfitted with nearly every liquid treat known to mankind - or womankind for that matter. We have a sizable platform built which stands about three feet off the ground. It makes a great stage but also doubles as a handy place under which to store the brush hog. Right next to that you'll see the manger. We cleaned it up a bit and now it makes a pretty good place to keep the instrument cases. There were a whole mess of locust fence rails that were not being used, so they got sawed up and made into some really comfortable chairs which are complete with goose down cushions covered with some of that indigo cloth we picked up over at the co-op. Notice that those chairs are gathered around a bunch of round hay bales. But you can see that they're not those big suckers. No, these are the smaller bales - just right for laying on their sides and putting a nice table top onto. And we put netting around the bales just to keep things neat.

That tongue-and-groove flooring is a new addition too. It suits its purpose pretty well, I'd say - and it wasn't all that difficult to install. The nice thing is that it can be easily pulled out in sections in case there is a need for it.

There's some more surprises over by that big stack of square bales and even more up in the loft. Y'all take a look around. Find a place that suits you and set a spell. We've got a big pitcher of sweet tea all ready over on the counter right next to where the jugs are. The walk-in cooler was behind that door to your left when you walked in. There's all kinds of fixin's for food in there and a full kitchen over next to that. But if you're hungry right this very minute, there's a couple of dinner pails full of fried chicken on this table over here and a big pot of creasy greens on that other one next to it. Help yourselves!

WhoooooYeee!! This looks like THE place to be, alright! Sheesh, Allan, ya really outdone yerself this time! Just one question though, for those of us who like the, um, *earthy* smell of a barn with livestock, well at least horses, maybe you could get one of those sprayers that emits a purrfume every once in awhile, like eau-dew-equine or somethin'?*BG*

Kat, no matter how I try to stop it, (and I don't try very hard) every time the breeze comes from the east, the smell from the paddock filters in. I hardly ever notice it, myself - especially this time of year. In the summer we usually slide open the big doors in the mornings, and you can sometimes catch a whiff of the pennyroyal which grows on the hillside down below the corral. It sure makes the place smell pleasant!

Iced tea and fried chicken...sounds like a Southern girls dream world! I'll just grab meself some of each and have a seat on this nice little bale of straw in the corner. (A good vantage point for the nutty goings on that will doubtless take place here.)
This looks like a nice spot for some barn dancing, too!

ALL RIGHT!!!! A barn dance!!! Let me grab my guitar and fiddle and I'll be right there. We're checking the latest batch of homebrew tonite, so if it's ready, I'll bring some along to share. Maybe we can get some contra dancing going.

All right, Mbo has entered the Bothy! What's tonight's specialty? How 'bout a little of Led Zeppelin's "Hot Dog!" or the Electric Light Orchestra's "Down Home Town"? Or how 'bout everyone cries in their barley malt as I pull out my guitar and join the band for "Goodbye, Old Rover, Goodbye".

Allan, maybe you should get lloyd61 to do the barn dance calls. He's pretty good at that.

Mama KatSW thinks I should busy myself in the kitchen. Boil up some water in the big pot for the corn.
Maybe someone would like to borrow my banjo while I'm doing me chores.

Hey! Love this new place, good work Allan C! Even though I had one hot toddy too many at the Cantina last nite, I'll try some of your homebrew, jeffp. Then I'll join that barn cat up there in the loft where the view is good and watch the games begin! SO who's gonna break in this brand new dance floor??

No projectiles coming from this direction. Zep rocks! "Hot Dog!" is from their last studio album "In Through The Out Door." The song is a riot, with Jimmy Page ripping through hoedown tunes on his axe, John Paul Jones doin' some Honky-Tonk piano stuff, and Robert Plant singing about how his girlfriend left him "She stole my heart, she stole my keys, from in my old blue dungarees..." Check it out, you won't regret it. Also, I think Zep has a legitimate place here. Think about "Friends," "Tangerine," "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp," "Goin' To California," "Hangman," etc. Good stuff!

Subject: Lyr Add: HOT DOG (Led Zeppelin)
From: Mbo
Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:43 PM

Caitrin, here's the lyrics:

HOT DOG!
Written by Jimmy Page & Robert Plant
As recorded by Led Zeppelin on "In Through the Out Door" (1979)

Well I just got into town today
To find my girl who's gone away
She took the Greyhound at the General Store
I searched myself I searched the town
When I finally did sit down
I find myself no wiser than before

She said we couldn't do no wrong
No other love could be so strong
She locked up my heart in her bottom drawer
Now she took my heart she took my keys
From in my old blue dungarees
And I'll never go to Texas anymore

* Chorus: Now my baby's gone I don't know what to do
She took my love and walked right out the door
And if I ever find that girl I know one thing for sure
I'm gonna give her something like she never had before

I took her love at seventeen
A little late these days it seems
But they said heaven is well worth waiting for
I took her word I took it all
Beneath the sign that said "U-haul"
She left angels hangin round for more

Chorus

I thought I had it all sewn up
Our love, a plot, a pick-up truck
But folks said she was after something more
I never did quite understand
All that talk about rockin' bands
But they just rolled my doll right out the door

Oh yeah, they just rolled my doll right out the door!

--Mbo

I'll be your partner in I could get untangled from this guitar strap...I don't dance, so you can either show me, or we can freestyle...

Nice spot. I'll tune up the fiddle and start in on Arkansas Traveller. Anyone know a dance to go with that one? *I have officially kicked off the fuzzy slippers and now have on me old barn boots. As long as I don't have to muck out any stalls while I'm here, I'm happy. I did a fair amount of that when I was a girl with a horse (and sheep and beef cattle, pigs, chickens and a few other critters.)

A nice cold pale ale would be right nice during the breaks between dances.

Well, doggone! You have one little toddy and a couple of corn chips and they roll ya right out the door of the Cantina and into the hay barn! Say, this looks like a right nice place...kinda reminds me of them Golden Days when I was a mere wee child in love with equines--most kids knew who Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger, Tonto, and Zorro were--but how many of you young 'uns remember their *horses'* names??

I'm gonna hang my Stetson right up here on this here old harness rack--y'all won't let me forget it if I have a couple too many Lone Stars, will ya? Thankee...

Okay! I got me a chicken wing, a beer, a hay bale--Hey! Arkansas Traveler? That's a good 'un, Susan! Would ya happen to know "I'd Waltz Across Texas With You"? Here, I'll hum it for ya...anybody got a Dobro?

A barn seems the right place to try out my new utriculus, bet it sounds better than my kazoo, ouch, where did it go? I must have had too many rums at the Cantina or too many brandies at the Tavern, as soon as I started to blow it went "Baaa" and ran away. Could it be New Zealand's national instrument?

Diablo was also the name of another TV horse!!! Do you know who THAT was??? Extra credit if you can name the sidekick AND his horse!!! And if you can name the actors who portrayed these characters, you got way too much shit floatin' around in your brain and are in need of serious help. Like me.

And the TV version of Wild Bill Hickok had him riding on "Buckshot" while his comical sidekick, played by Andy Devine, rode "Nellie". Does anyone remember the name of what Roy Rogers' TV sidekick, Pat Brady, rode?

Speaking of riding, if anyone wants to ride, just head over to that building over next to the corral. We just built it to replace the old tack room and horse stalls. It contains 9 stalls and a big, beautiful tack room. Just go in and grab a saddle and the rest of the gear and head on down to the corral. Take your pick from any of the horses we've got turned out there. They all are friendly but spirited. But keep a good eye on that big roan. She's a bit moody and is likely to give you much more of a ride than you bargained for.

Now, I am going to head over to the trout pond and see if I can catch enough of them to share with you fine people. Meanwhile, if any of you could be trying to remember a recipe, I'd be willing to let you give it a go.

Before I go though, I'll grab me a mug of that dark Sumatran coffee and sit here a bit while I sort out my midges. By the way, if anyone wants to join me, they're welcome. Or if a different kind of fishing is your thing, there's a real good spot for catching bass down there where Mudcat Creek runs into the lake. There's some extra tackle in that closet over there to the right of the rear door to the kitchen.

Now, that reminds me...I know a bunch of songs about sitting next to the water or paddling on it, but not a single one comes to mind about freshwater fishing. Anybody know one?

Been watching "Christmas Story" have you?

Jean Shephard just died this year and I truly loved his stories. We were 15 or so years apart, but growing up in "small town" midwest hadn't changed much and I "lived" a lot of his tales myself. For some pure nostalgia, read "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters," "A Fistful of Fig Newtons, and "In God We Trust,All Others Pay Cash." I miss him already.

'Spaw, my family and I LOVE that movie. We have watched it several times a year since 1989. We've watched it so much we have whole scenes memorized word for word. I too was greatly saddened to hear about Jean Shephard's death. There will never be another humorist like him. We own "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash." We had it out from a library several years ago, and had been searching for it in book stores ever since. We did actually find it at an antique store--we count it as a miracle--that it was put there purpously for us to find! Last summer, I read the book to my family. We LOVE the parts about night fishing in Indiana, and the escapes of the movie give-aways, and the fourth of July rockets. Jean Shepherd had such a rich and descriptive vocabulary, I think he can be put up there with Charles Dickens for the way in which he painted with words. I sorely miss him...

Looks like Jeremiah McCaw has been watching...oh what was it? "Holiday Inn"? My favorite part is when they discover it is starting to snow. They slide open the big doors to look and the dialog goes something like: "This is great!" "Gee, isn't this great?" "Wow! This is great!"

Ah yes! That would have been when Andy Hardy went out west. I'm thinking that was quite nearly the title of the film. It was just such films which were the inspiration for the design of this barn.

I'm afraid I didn't have much luck at the trout pond, so I came back and traded my fly rod for a cane pole and headed down to the lake. I was only able to catch these five little eight-pound catfish and one big ol' bass. I know it isn't much, but they're all cleaned and ready. BarbaraLynn just finished learning a couple of new strums from WyoWoman and said she might give me a hand with cooking up this mess of fish if I promised to teach her another chord. She mentioned something about the possibility of whipping up some frybread to go along with the black-eyed peas I put on the stove early this morning.

Hi Jeremiah
Guess what Mudcat Barn Goers.........I had the great opportunity to meet the honourable Jeremiah McCaw in person last Saturday night at The Acoustic Harvest Folk Club. It was such a treat to have Heather introduced me to him.
I also got a chance to meet some other Mudcatters like Davey Gallagher who is also one of the organizers of the Acoustic Folk Club and Arnie Naiman who is an excellent banjo player. Arnie played a few tunes with his wife Kathy. I even had a chance to hear Rick play a few songs.
I think you guys should definately consider moving to Toronto.

Bonnie, we're working on Toronto. Give us a few years and we'll probably be up there (yup, ANOTHER couple of Americans)

I've brought along a couple of pecan pies tonight, just to follow up on the catfish and skillet bread, and I also have a nice pot of hoppin' John (I'll make it again for New Years if it fits) Don't tell the folks at my vegetarian establiiishment, but I did throw a nice hunk of salt pork into this batch. It does something to those black eyed peas.

Now, I'm up for learning tunes (not too brain dead, I don't think) Waltz Acros Texas hadn't ought to spook that roan too much (Hang on Night Owl) I'll leave the young folks to romp in the hay, just don't stir it up too much or I'll have to take drugs that interfere with my beer drinking in order to keep from sneezing my head off.

(What is it that always makes us smart little cusses smoke in barns? It's the ONLY place I ever smoked, with my buddy Janey McKinny when I was about 13, and it is such a DUMB place to smoke.)

Ah yes, Watlz Across Texas, where were we?

I am about stuffed! I just had a plateload of fried catfish and hushpuppies. De-e-elicious! I 'preciate it! Maybe by the time New Years arrives I'll have room for some of that good ol'hoppin' John I have known lot's of folks who just couldn't properly begin a year without some. But I believe as soon as I finish some of this fine skillet cornbread, I would sure like to have a small sample of that pecan pie. It smells wonderful! But after that I am going to be ready to grab a jug of moonshine and set down on a square bale for a spell and listen to some of this good music.

Of course, after a while, we could do a little more seasonal music if anyone was interested. Or, even though a bit late, I found some pretty neat songs for Hanukkah we might try singing.

Now I need to resort to fiddle and bow again because I am too hoarse to sing. I have my throat coat tea here by the computer and am listening to some Archie Fisher in order to setle in for the night (I also had a cup of real coffee before the concert, I am a wee bit wired.)

Gee Allan, we may need a bigger hay pile, given the activity over there.

well, I'll raise my mug o' tea and tune her up. How about Ashoakan (sp) farewell played a bit lightly so that folks can do a nice light waltz. (Nothing too rowdy or I'll be up all night, and I have to make a LOT of lasagne tomorrow)

Here's the promised lasagne. We've got pesto lasagne with fresh tomatoes on top, or artichoke heart lasagne with puttanesca sauce. Oh, and I happened to have a cabbage, so here's my version of coleslaw, helmans mayo, vinegar, onions, and lots of black pepper and dill. No sweet stuff for me until after dinner.

Bert, Vance didn't sing Contry and Western Rap. He did come by the Kitchen today for lunch, and sat and chowed down and talked for about half an hour. Neat man, and what a lot of fun. He actually did a lot of pretty serious songs last night, but the patter literally had me doubled over laughing.

Bill, I really do know Ashokan's Farewell, so let's get to it. I find that if folks are dancing, it's a great time to learn a tune, 'cause you play it over and over and over and . . .

It's clammyu and cold, and our sudden snow (eight unpredicted inches yesterday) has settled into a heavy wet blanket. I should have gone out and made a snow something in our yard, but had to cook instead. So is it warm here? Is it beer and Tee shirt country? If not, I'm heading for that hay stack with my down comforter and my fiddle will just be sticking out from under things a bit.

Susan A-R, not unlike the original Mudcat Tavern, climate, current weather, temperature, etc. are all subject to where on the farm you would like to be at the moment. The Barn itself is climate controlled. It has to be. The body heat from all those people dancing (and frolicking in the hay,) actually set off the air conditioners! The dancing became especially joyous after we all learned of Caitrin's acceptance to UNC-Asheville. Now if you're concerned about what is happening outside, well, it felt like early autumn over near the trout pond. But I was told there was someone playing around in a foot of snow up in the high pasture. That might have been LEJ but I didn't get up there to look yet. If you want to check on him, you can get there by taking that other road.

I am going to grab a quick taste of this lasagna and then I'm heading back over to the fire circle to listen to some more stories. I heard that Kat and Aíne were sharing some good ones.

Arise! Arise! My army! No one dares to attack Marechal Mbo, The Icicle of Doom! His fort is impenetrable! His moat is uncrossable! His ice chevaux-de-frixe and sheer walls cannot be negotiated! His army hurls snowballs with frightening accuracy! Do you hear the his Imperial Minstrels blaring out his piobaireachd--his war note--as he runs back and forth, encouraging his fighters with fiery words, spurring them to complete and total VICTORY?! **feels splat on head** Blast the Snow General Caitrin! That was my favorite merry chapeau! Fag an bealach & full speed ahead!

I have a big thermos jug of hot spiced wine, and am ready to roll. Now no ice in those snow balls children. Let's start a nice big pile of snow, pack it down a bit, and build it up so we have something solid to do our construction from. Ah, this is perfect packing snow, as we call it, just wet enough to hold together, but not too heavy to move around easily. See, you can roll nice big fort blocks like this.

Now I am not picking sides. I'm just travelling back and forth as a consultant, and if I get hit by a snowball, just remember that, legally blind or not, I've been winghing these things for a LOONG time, and I can aim.

Teach me howl to throw right, Susan! The first and last time I threw a snowball was January 1992!

Ha! You shall never defeat me! I am INVINCIBLE!!!! The world trembles at the mention of the Snow General Caitrin's name! Her victories are the stuff of legend! Her armies follow her as the legions did Caesar! Those who stand against Snow General Caitrin are DOOMED!!! *feels splat on head* Rats. I'd better get building.

Caitrin...feel free to teleport us to your new location anytime.....(after about 100 posts, the threads get kinda hard to load)...an appropriate action for you and your icy legions, I would say...

When you lads & lasses are done playing in the snow, you might want to come back in through the tackroom door. I've stoked the coal stove and its extra nice & warm there.
