Okay, that's about as long as I can keep up the accent. We don't all sound like that, you know.
Now if you take a look around, you'll find that this is not only an incredibly big barn, but it is also outfitted with things you wouldn't normally expect to find. I mean, look at that hand hewn counter top that was built over where that hay rake is parked. That thing is plumb handsome! And behind it is a former tack room which is now fully outfitted with nearly every liquid treat known to mankind - or womankind for that matter. We have a sizable platform built which stands about three feet off the ground. It makes a great stage but also doubles as a handy place under which to store the brush hog. Right next to that you'll see the manger. We cleaned it up a bit and now it makes a pretty good place to keep the instrument cases. There were a whole mess of locust fence rails that were not being used, so they got sawed up and made into some really comfortable chairs which are complete with goose down cushions covered with some of that indigo cloth we picked up over at the co-op. Notice that those chairs are gathered around a bunch of round hay bales. But you can see that they're not those big suckers. No, these are the smaller bales - just right for laying on their sides and putting a nice table top onto. And we put netting around the bales just to keep things neat.
That tongue-and-groove flooring is a new addition too. It suits its purpose pretty well, I'd say - and it wasn't all that difficult to install. The nice thing is that it can be easily pulled out in sections in case there is a need for it. There's some more surprises over by that big stack of square bales and even more up in the loft. Y'all take a look around. Find a place that suits you and set a spell. We've got a big pitcher of sweet tea all ready over on the counter right next to where the jugs are. The walk-in cooler was behind that door to your left when you walked in. There's all kinds of fixin's for food in there and a full kitchen over next to that. But if you're hungry right this very minute, there's a couple of dinner pails full of fried chicken on this table over here and a big pot of creasy greens on that other one next to it. Help yourselves!

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: katlaughing Date: 07 Dec 99 - 07:11 PM WhoooooYeee!! This looks like THE place to be, alright! Sheesh, Allan, ya really outdone yerself this time! Just one question though, for those of us who like the, um, *earthy* smell of a barn with livestock, well at least horses, maybe you could get one of those sprayers that emits a purrfume every once in awhile, like eau-dew-equine or somethin'?*BG* |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 07 Dec 99 - 07:26 PM Kat, no matter how I try to stop it, (and I don't try very hard) every time the breeze comes from the east, the smell from the paddock filters in. I hardly ever notice it, myself - especially this time of year. In the summer we usually slide open the big doors in the mornings, and you can sometimes catch a whiff of the pennyroyal which grows on the hillside down below the corral. It sure makes the place smell pleasant! |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: katlaughing Date: 07 Dec 99 - 07:30 PM Sounds lovely, Allan, even without that dusty scent of horsehair and saddle leather which I love so much. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: BarbaraLynn Date: 07 Dec 99 - 07:49 PM Let me see, let me see...what could we begin the fun with...would a rousing rendition of "Tennessee Stud" fit right in here?
|
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 07 Dec 99 - 07:50 PM Iced tea and fried chicken...sounds like a Southern girls dream world! I'll just grab meself some of each and have a seat on this nice little bale of straw in the corner. (A good vantage point for the nutty goings on that will doubtless take place here.) This looks like a nice spot for some barn dancing, too! |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: jeffp Date: 07 Dec 99 - 07:55 PM ALL RIGHT!!!! A barn dance!!! Let me grab my guitar and fiddle and I'll be right there. We're checking the latest batch of homebrew tonite, so if it's ready, I'll bring some along to share. Maybe we can get some contra dancing going. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 07 Dec 99 - 09:53 PM All right, Mbo has entered the Bothy! What's tonight's specialty? How 'bout a little of Led Zeppelin's "Hot Dog!" or the Electric Light Orchestra's "Down Home Town"? Or how 'bout everyone cries in their barley malt as I pull out my guitar and join the band for "Goodbye, Old Rover, Goodbye". --Mbo (has the Cantina moved over to this joint?) |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Little Neophyte Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:00 PM Allan, maybe you should get lloyd61 to do the barn dance calls. He's pretty good at that. Mama KatSW thinks I should busy myself in the kitchen. Boil up some water in the big pot for the corn. Maybe someone would like to borrow my banjo while I'm doing me chores. Banjo Bonnie |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:07 PM Mbo, I think I somehow managed to miss out on "Hot Dog". :) Though it would probably fit thematically with most of Led Zeppelin's other music. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:07 PM Oooh! Can I play yer banjo, Bonnie! I've always wanted to play one. Hmm...it can't be too different than a guitar of violin. I got the "classical guitar fingernails" so I don't need fingerpicks! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:11 PM Caitrin, do you mean you've missed out on hearing it, or missed out on finding it of interest? --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:18 PM Missed out on hearing it...as such, I don't know if I'd be interested. Risking having things thrown at my head, I'll admit to being rather fond of Led Zeppelin. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: TheMuse Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:23 PM Hey! Love this new place, good work Allan C! Even though I had one hot toddy too many at the Cantina last nite, I'll try some of your homebrew, jeffp. Then I'll join that barn cat up there in the loft where the view is good and watch the games begin! SO who's gonna break in this brand new dance floor?? TheMuse |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:25 PM I'm always set for dancing, but I'll need a partner (I would look extremely silly bouncing around the floor by myself). Any takers? And who's gonna start up some music in this joint? |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:25 PM No projectiles coming from this direction. Zep rocks! "Hot Dog!" is from their last studio album "In Through The Out Door." The song is a riot, with Jimmy Page ripping through hoedown tunes on his axe, John Paul Jones doin' some Honky-Tonk piano stuff, and Robert Plant singing about how his girlfriend left him "She stole my heart, she stole my keys, from in my old blue dungarees..." Check it out, you won't regret it. Also, I think Zep has a legitimate place here. Think about "Friends," "Tangerine," "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp," "Goin' To California," "Hangman," etc. Good stuff! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Little Neophyte Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:28 PM Sure Mbo, come into the kitchen, and while I'm getting the corn ready, I'll give you a quick run down on the tuning & basic chords. BB |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Caitrin Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:31 PM I totally agree, Mbo, and I'll definitely check out the song. (All the Zeppelin I have is the early stuff and the BBC Sessions). I'm glad I'm not getting any projectiles yet. :) |
Subject: Lyr Add: HOT DOG (Led Zeppelin) From: Mbo Date: 07 Dec 99 - 10:43 PM Caitrin, here's the lyrics:
HOT DOG!
Well I just got into town today
She said we couldn't do no wrong
* Chorus: Now my baby's gone I don't know what to do
I took her love at seventeen Chorus
I thought I had it all sewn up Oh yeah, they just rolled my doll right out the door! --Mbo I'll be your partner in I could get untangled from this guitar strap...I don't dance, so you can either show me, or we can freestyle... --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Susan A-R Date: 07 Dec 99 - 11:10 PM Nice spot. I'll tune up the fiddle and start in on Arkansas Traveller. Anyone know a dance to go with that one? *I have officially kicked off the fuzzy slippers and now have on me old barn boots. As long as I don't have to muck out any stalls while I'm here, I'm happy. I did a fair amount of that when I was a girl with a horse (and sheep and beef cattle, pigs, chickens and a few other critters.) A nice cold pale ale would be right nice during the breaks between dances. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: sophocleese Date: 07 Dec 99 - 11:34 PM Hey Caitrin, I like Led Zeppelin too. Actually its been years since I really listened to any as the turntable wnet and I haven't got any CDs of theirs. Too much money spent on less well known folks. Maybe with Christmas coming up...I'm thinking. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 08 Dec 99 - 01:03 AM Durn fine wee place ya got. Gee gang, this is a swell ol' barn. Why don't we put on our show RIGHT HERE?! |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Lin in Kansas Date: 08 Dec 99 - 01:27 AM Well, doggone! You have one little toddy and a couple of corn chips and they roll ya right out the door of the Cantina and into the hay barn! Say, this looks like a right nice place...kinda reminds me of them Golden Days when I was a mere wee child in love with equines--most kids knew who Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger, Tonto, and Zorro were--but how many of you young 'uns remember their *horses'* names?? I'm gonna hang my Stetson right up here on this here old harness rack--y'all won't let me forget it if I have a couple too many Lone Stars, will ya? Thankee... Okay! I got me a chicken wing, a beer, a hay bale--Hey! Arkansas Traveler? That's a good 'un, Susan! Would ya happen to know "I'd Waltz Across Texas With You"? Here, I'll hum it for ya...anybody got a Dobro? |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Roger the skiffler Date: 08 Dec 99 - 04:26 AM A barn seems the right place to try out my new utriculus, bet it sounds better than my kazoo, ouch, where did it go? I must have had too many rums at the Cantina or too many brandies at the Tavern, as soon as I started to blow it went "Baaa" and ran away. Could it be New Zealand's national instrument? [Puzzled? see thread on Cleigh and Spaw in literature] |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Banjer Date: 08 Dec 99 - 05:49 AM Let's see, horses names? Roy Rogers rode Trigger, Gene Autry's mount was Champion and The Lone Ranger rode into the sunset on Silver. Not so sure of Tonto or Zorro, although I seem to thing Scout and El Diablo repectively for them. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 08 Dec 99 - 06:05 AM Drop the "El", Banjer, and you be 'bout perfect ('cording to my imperfect memory). Speaking of memory - the memorabilia in this here barn is darned subtle. Imagine - hanging innocently with the rest of the tools is Pete Barbutti's tenor broom! |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Dec 99 - 06:59 AM Hey gang.....Since we're in this great old barn and "horsin' around".....Zorro did ride Diablo, BUT.. Diablo was also the name of another TV horse!!! Do you know who THAT was??? Extra credit if you can name the sidekick AND his horse!!! And if you can name the actors who portrayed these characters, you got way too much shit floatin' around in your brain and are in need of serious help. Like me. Spaw |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Neil Lowe Date: 08 Dec 99 - 07:12 AM ....wow, Allan, greta idea, fixing up a barn like this. I grew up on a farm, so this brings back fond memories ....of mostly illicit stuff, like sneaking a smoke, or underage consumption of alcohol stolen out of my dad's fridge....or stealing a kiss from the farmer's daughter down the road.....the good ole' days. Neil |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Night Owl Date: 08 Dec 99 - 07:19 AM Cisco Kid rode Diablo; Pauncho was his sidekick and rode Amigo. YES??? Thankfully I can't remember the actors!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 08 Dec 99 - 07:22 AM And the TV version of Wild Bill Hickok had him riding on "Buckshot" while his comical sidekick, played by Andy Devine, rode "Nellie". Does anyone remember the name of what Roy Rogers' TV sidekick, Pat Brady, rode? Speaking of riding, if anyone wants to ride, just head over to that building over next to the corral. We just built it to replace the old tack room and horse stalls. It contains 9 stalls and a big, beautiful tack room. Just go in and grab a saddle and the rest of the gear and head on down to the corral. Take your pick from any of the horses we've got turned out there. They all are friendly but spirited. But keep a good eye on that big roan. She's a bit moody and is likely to give you much more of a ride than you bargained for.
Now, I am going to head over to the trout pond and see if I can catch enough of them to share with you fine people. Meanwhile, if any of you could be trying to remember a recipe, I'd be willing to let you give it a go. Before I go though, I'll grab me a mug of that dark Sumatran coffee and sit here a bit while I sort out my midges. By the way, if anyone wants to join me, they're welcome. Or if a different kind of fishing is your thing, there's a real good spot for catching bass down there where Mudcat Creek runs into the lake. There's some extra tackle in that closet over there to the right of the rear door to the kitchen. Now, that reminds me...I know a bunch of songs about sitting next to the water or paddling on it, but not a single one comes to mind about freshwater fishing. Anybody know one?

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Dec 99 - 07:40 AM You got the Cisco Kid and Pancho right Owl!!! No cigar on Pancho's horse though. AND...Allen, Pat Brady "rode" a jeep named NellieBelle. Spaw |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Night Owl Date: 08 Dec 99 - 07:45 AM Geeze Allan...that big roan sure sounds tempting...mind if I play with her for a while..is she "moody" or just has a "strong sense of self" ?? (She could probably use a warning if any banjos head this way).....we'll be back by the time the instruments are tuned up. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 08 Dec 99 - 08:13 AM What about Red Ryder's horse? And does anyone know The Lone Ranger's nephew's horse? JL, will a reg'lar old six string played on the lap with a copper slide work in lieu of a dobro? --Mbo |

Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Dec 99 - 08:45 AM Been watching "Christmas Story" have you? Jean Shephard just died this year and I truly loved his stories. We were 15 or so years apart, but growing up in "small town" midwest hadn't changed much and I "lived" a lot of his tales myself. For some pure nostalgia, read "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters," "A Fistful of Fig Newtons, and "In God We Trust,All Others Pay Cash." I miss him already. Spaw |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: jeffp Date: 08 Dec 99 - 08:48 AM How about we stuff some of that trout with a little crab, Monterey Jack cheese, and Old Bay seasoning? Should go just fine with my Lightkeeper's Pale that is just about mature enough to drink. I'll warm up the oven. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Mbo Date: 08 Dec 99 - 08:56 AM 'Spaw, my family and I LOVE that movie. We have watched it several times a year since 1989. We've watched it so much we have whole scenes memorized word for word. I too was greatly saddened to hear about Jean Shephard's death. There will never be another humorist like him. We own "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash." We had it out from a library several years ago, and had been searching for it in book stores ever since. We did actually find it at an antique store--we count it as a miracle--that it was put there purpously for us to find! Last summer, I read the book to my family. We LOVE the parts about night fishing in Indiana, and the escapes of the movie give-aways, and the fourth of July rockets. Jean Shepherd had such a rich and descriptive vocabulary, I think he can be put up there with Charles Dickens for the way in which he painted with words. I sorely miss him... --Mbo |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 08 Dec 99 - 09:19 AM Looks like Jeremiah McCaw has been watching...oh what was it? "Holiday Inn"? My favorite part is when they discover it is starting to snow. They slide open the big doors to look and the dialog goes something like: "This is great!" "Gee, isn't this great?" "Wow! This is great!" |

Fried lightly in butter, please, with a little lemon and herb dressing...uhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Lin in Kansas Date: 08 Dec 99 - 12:43 PM Oh, and Mbo--slide guitar would work just fine on "Waltz Across Texas"--now all I need is a dance partner, another beer, and a right foot to go with my two left ones--not necessarily in that order. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 08 Dec 99 - 01:44 PM Even further back, Allan C. Wouldja believe Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland films? Other stuff: Cisco - Duncan Renaldo Pancho - Leo Carillo Jr. Can't remember Pancho's horse, but Dale Evans rode Buttermilk. |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Little Neophyte Date: 08 Dec 99 - 02:18 PM JL from Ozland, how about we make our own stand selling Aunt Bea's jam? Anyone wanting to steal a kiss from me has to come find me in the big hay stack. (that includes Neil) BB |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: MMario Date: 08 Dec 99 - 02:25 PM BB - did anyone ever warn you I spend my entire summer working in a pile of hay?????? |
Subject: RE: The Mudcat Barn From: Allan C. Date: 08 Dec 99 - 02:29 PM Ah yes! That would have been when Andy Hardy went out west. I'm thinking that was quite nearly the title of the film. It was just such films which were the inspiration for the design of this barn. I'm afraid I didn't have much luck at the trout pond, so I came back and traded my fly rod for a cane pole and headed down to the lake. I was only able to catch these five little eight-pound catfish and one big ol' bass. I know it isn't much, but they're all cleaned and ready. BarbaraLynn just finished learning a couple of new strums from WyoWoman and said she might give me a hand with cooking up this mess of fish if I promised to teach her another chord. She mentioned something about the possibility of whipping up some frybread to go along with the black-eyed peas I put on the stove early this morning. |

It was such a treat to have Heather introduced me to him. I also got a chance to meet some other Mudcatters like Davey Gallagher who is also one of the organizers of the Acoustic Folk Club and Arnie Naiman who is an excellent banjo player. Arnie played a few tunes with his wife Kathy. I even had a chance to hear Rick play a few songs. I think you guys should definately consider moving to Toronto. BB |
