Subject: BS: Wig Glue From: michaelr Date: 01 May 16 - 03:17 PM I have seen this term a number of times in discussions on thesession.org. It appears to be a British thing, and I suppose it is some sort of putdown. As a US resident, I'm intrigued and would like to know more about it. (Probably opening myself up to abuse...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: keberoxu Date: 01 May 16 - 03:19 PM Right away I thought of Lord Laurence Olivier, but I suppose that is too literal. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Megan L Date: 01 May 16 - 03:26 PM Never going to the session I can't say if it is used as a put down there but it was common when I was young and can still be bought though more people use twig tape these days . Spirit gum was used in both holding on a toupee and in the theatre to add facial hair. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: keberoxu Date: 01 May 16 - 03:30 PM rhymes with igloo? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Stanron Date: 01 May 16 - 05:15 PM All I found on the session with wig glue in the title were two threads. One seven years old and the other five years old. Perhaps you could post a link to a more modern thread. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: michaelr Date: 01 May 16 - 06:41 PM Typing "wig glue" into the search box at the session.org brings up 8 threads, none of which provide any answers, just a sort of "nudge nudge, wink wink" kind of "insider" feel. I want to be an insider too! |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 May 16 - 02:22 AM my first thought when I saw the thread title was the bloke I saw years ago whose comb-over was flapping in the breeze like cocky's comb! |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Senoufou Date: 02 May 16 - 04:28 AM Hahaha Sandra! Our churchwarden has a very long comb-over, and it often flies out behind him leaving his very bald head for all to see. He's also the organist, and sometimes he looks quite mad sitting playing with feet and hands, his hair sticking up just like your 'cocky's comb'. I love Cockney rhyming slang, and it took me a while to figure out 'syrup'. It's short for 'syrup of fig' ie 'wig'. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Noreen Date: 02 May 16 - 07:09 AM "It appears to be a British thing" Though British, I have never heard it used. Perhaps it's just a "thesession.org" thing. Show us where it's used in context and perhaps it'll make more sense? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Noreen Date: 02 May 16 - 07:18 AM Looks like this is where it started Just silliness between people who know each other, I'd say. Worth reading for the following old joke though: Re: Traditional Wig Glue? Man goes into a wig shop; I am interested in buying a wig. Cirtainly sir; we have these in nylon, or these in natural hair. How moch for the natural hair ones ? Sixtyfive pounds plus tax. I wont need the tax, I was going to clag it on. # Posted by Pete Stephenson 7 years ago. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Stanron Date: 02 May 16 - 01:16 PM Again when I type that in I only get five and seven year old threads. If you can't post a link maybe you could post a thread title. michaelr wrote: Typing "wig glue" into the search box at the session.org brings up 8 threads, none of which provide any answers, just a sort of "nudge nudge, wink wink" kind of "insider" feel. Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 May 16 - 05:12 PM Stanron - the best way to search MUdcat is to use a Google site search. Type wig glue site:mudcat.org into google search. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Stanron Date: 02 May 16 - 06:54 PM michaelr wrote: Here you go, Stanron:These threads are 7,5,6,5,5,5.4 and 6 years old respectivly. With possibly one exception they are all contributions by one David Cameron Dudley. It might be a very private joke, and then, bearing in mind that glue sniffing is a disreputable method of getting intoxicated, maybe wig glue contains or contained solvents that can be intoxicating. Why anyone would want to make veiled allusions to intoxication in sessions is beyond me. In sum, it's one man and his rather old and obscure attempt at humour. Not something to worry about. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: michaelr Date: 03 May 16 - 12:18 AM OK. I thought there might be something more to it, but perhaps not. Hmmm... Dudley Glue-Right? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: nickp Date: 03 May 16 - 03:57 AM Nothing to do with Trump then... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Noreen Date: 03 May 16 - 08:38 AM As above, it started with someone being funny about keeping your wig on during enthusiastic playing in a session, 8 years ago. No further general relevance. Unless you know different. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wig Glue From: Stanron Date: 03 May 16 - 10:22 AM It's certainly nothing to do with national characteristics. |
