Subject: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Wesley S Date: 11 May 16 - 09:04 AM In todays paper I see that Budweiser is going to rename their beer during the Olympics. It will be called "America". And printed underneath? "From the redwood forests to the gulf stream waters, this land was made for you and me" Photo here. Your thoughts? |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Steve Shaw Date: 11 May 16 - 10:16 AM It seems that the song is in the public domain, so the company is technically in the clear. If it were me, before I drank any more of their beer, I'd want to know if they had Woody's descendants' blessing. Actually, come to think of it, it's hypothetical for me because I wouldn't drink that shite anyway. 😂 |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 11 May 16 - 10:24 AM I'm sure Arlo would rather see Woody's words on cans of that green stuff they now legally sell in Colorado, instead of on cans of cheap beer. |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: GUEST,Severn Date: 11 May 16 - 02:59 PM we're all sadder, Budweiser.... If "America", in this case, isn't talking about at least North America as a whole, they should rename it United States. We're NOT America, merely one of the countries that's part of it, no matter how pompous we seem to be in thinking we're the whole thing, or at least the only thing that matters.....But wait a minute, the Pompous sounds Argentinian, and they're SOUTH America!....."Splain it to me, Kingfish."...... All I know, is that Budweiser is to beer what the singing group America was to lyric writing.... "Asta never gave nothin' to the Thin Man That Sir Galla hadn't already had.".... (Or however that nonsense went.....) |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Joe Offer Date: 11 May 16 - 03:16 PM Aw, Severn, what so wrong about saying "Americans"? "Unitedstatesians" just doesn't work, and we have to have some name to call ourselves....and some beer we can call our own, national beer - but don't the Belgians own it now? Budweiser is a rice-based beer, and I think I like it best among the mass-produced American beers. If you put a Sapporo or Kirin label on it, you could double the price. It's cheaper than craft beers, and usually lower in alcohol content. It's good with pizza and bratwurst on a hot day, and it beats the hell outa Schlitz. I think the special can is kinda cute, but then I'm not a purist. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: GUEST,Ebor Fiddler Date: 11 May 16 - 07:14 PM It's probably just our European snobbery to believe that true Budwieser beer is still made in Bohemia, the Czech Republic, Chechya or whatever they're calling it this week. (They're still trying to get a snappy name that everyone will immediately recognise, like for instance "America" for the USA.) Love and Fishes, Chris B. |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Joe Offer Date: 11 May 16 - 08:51 PM I had the opportunity a few years ago, so I had to try the true Budweiser. I thought it was a a Pilsner beer, but I may be wrong about that. It tasted kinda like Pilsner Urquell to me. It's good (and better than the American stuff), but it's not a favorite. I suppose that nowadays, I drink mostly U.S. craft beers, and there are many I enjoy. But I grew up in Milwaukee, where it seemed to be a goal to find beer that was as cheap as possible. Most people I knew drank Hamm's, because it was cheaper than the Milwaukee beers. I worked at a summer camp during college, and the tavern next door charged fifteen cents for a 7-ounce glass of Hamm's draft. I've heard people in Central Europe refer to the Czech Republic as simply "Czech." That works for me. Sure is a beautiful place. -Joe-

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Bill D Date: 11 May 16 - 10:47 PM "... best among the mass-produced American beers." Umm.... sorta depends on your criteria for "mass produced". There are any number of 'basic' beers (mostly lagers) which I'd pick over Bud... if I was forced to pick. I remember Johnny Collins, when he was here was here many years ago with Jim Mageean, explaining that in the US (east coast) they usually picked Iron City, because "at least it tastes like something!" I have not tasted Bud for about 30+ years, when one of my wife's relatives offered me a can..... I drank about a third of it and managed to pour the rest in a potted plant. As to the "America" cans, I would be very sad to see such a connection being made.... and I'd hope they would have the same success as "New Coke". |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Wesley S Date: 11 May 16 - 11:00 PM "Can't hear any music in this thread," I guess the point I was trying to make is that sometimes music is used to sell products it has nothing to do with { Carly Simon's Anticipation and ketchup comes to mind } - and that an artist seems to have so little control over his or her music. Esp when lawyers and managers get involved. The quality - or lack thereof - of Budweiser was not what I wanted discussed. But thread creep is also something we have no control over either. I just hope the Guthries or their foundation are making a buck out of this union of beer and Woodys song. Is it really in the public domain? And as far as the quality of a cold Bud? I doubt Woody would have turned one down. As long as it was cold. But I'm just guessing. |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Dorothy Parshall Date: 12 May 16 - 12:22 AM This Canadian gave up the "America" struggle years ago. It is too engrained in the feeble minds of those who think they have the world by the.... Think they are the be-all and end-all when they are actually the..........(your choice). |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Rapparee Date: 12 May 16 - 08:41 AM When I do drink beer I like it to taste like something other than the Clydesdales. Moose Drool is good, Bitch Creek is good, Troutslayer is good, Dead Man Ale is good, Midnight Satin is good...too many GOOD beers to drink Budweiser. |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Mr Red Date: 12 May 16 - 08:53 AM Since we are talkin' alcohol I don't hear no talk of cider - the proper sort, when apple juice gets a sniff of the yeast. I was rather partial to Quebequa ciders, low ABV enough to keep you hydrated and still know how to play badminton (when I did badminton in Ontario). |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Stu Date: 12 May 16 - 08:55 AM Budweiser is pish, plain and simple; US lagers are all pretty bloody awful, apart from some of the craft lagers. It's served cold so you can't taste it. |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie lyrics and Budweiser cans From: Joe Offer Date: 12 May 16 - 03:52 PM Hi, Wesley - The idea of the use of music to sell products is an interesting topic. So, my kid wrote a song titled Me and Guiliani Down by the School Yard - A True Story, and Toyota wanted to buy the song for use in a commercial. They offered $100,000, and the bidding got up to $250,000 by the time my son and his band decided that they just didn't want to go commercial and be known only as the band in the Toyota commercial. So, they passed up the $250,000 and they're still a fairly popular band making not very much money today. But they didn't compromise and sell out to a corporation, and they're proud of that. -Joe- |
