ps.. I've not read too deeply, so my conclusions might not be exactly correct...???

But I'll guess that if projects in progress can only be stored on Avid's cloud,
surely they must enable free users to render finished stereo master tracks
and save them offline onto their own computers...?????

I'm not entirely rejecting it...

The old Pro Tools free over 10 years ago was brilliant.

The catch with this new version is you cannot save projects offline to your own hard drives.

Avid allow free users 500mg cloud storage for 3 projects at a time,
then they want to sell you more cloud storage for a monthly fee.

That's why I wont install and use it in a hurry as a primary recording Daw.

However, If it allows use of cool software instrument and FX that can be output as audio to other recording devices,
then it'll find a place in my toolbox.

There is one serious beneficial use I can think of.

Because it's cloud based, it'll allow musicians on a low budget
to each install the software, then collaborate remotely on new recordings..

Simple dodge which may be possible, each should have storage for 3 projects,
so if 4 members of a band have 3 each...... 😉
that could be useful...

Just remembered - long time ago in the Win 98 era Protools provided a free cut down version for student, colleges, anyone,
to learn the basics of the 'industry standard' software...

It was excellent and easy to use. Then it was discontinued...

Last year they announced they were reintroducing a brand new more powerful free version..

Sounded promising, until it was revealed it was cloud based.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but as I understand, there is no way you are allowed to save projects to your own hardware drives...???

Maybe someone else might be interested in investigating...???

After the 60 days you can still use and update it for free
if you wait as the opening nag screen counts down, then press the 'still evaluating' button.

Or you can pay for it if like Reaper and want to support the developers...

Clarification please - went to download Reaper and it says "60 day evaluation" so how much does it cost after 60 days? As a long time3 Audacity user I was just curious ...

I have Reaper and Audacity on my Win 10 PC. Both run fine. I prefer Reaper to Audacity, it's more complicated but its appearance is much more 'professional' and, as someone else said, there's a lot of instructional stuff on t'interweb.

if it's the one I think it.. is not for many years [15 or more ????]

I did a music tech course 20 years ago when cubase was a midi only sequencer on macs with black and white monitors...

About 15 years ago I tried out most audio recording sequencers to get a feel for them..

eg, cubase, logic, cakewalk / sonar, and others I can't remember the names of...

[the innocent days of 'try before you buy' software release groups..}


All vastly too over priced, highly specced and brimming with bells n whistles for my minimalist needs..

Today, I'd use both Audacity and Reaper,
and maybe any of the free Lite versions of cubase, ableton, sonar.. bundled with affordable USB audio interfaces.

I've not used Reaper but I have used Audacity. It's easy to use and there is a helpful on-line forum.

64bit vs 32bit is a red herring for most applications. It's fine to run a 32bit app under a 64bit OS if - like Windows - it's supported. Indeed I see that Reaper recommend the 32 bit version.

Audacity is freeware, not available in 64bit, but apparently works well enough on 64bit systems like Win 10

Reaper is shareware, but can be used completely for free, even after trial limit. It is 64 bit.
But far more bells and whistles than audacity.

That should kick off the answers and maybe ideas about alternative programs....

Folks,I'm wanting to do some simple multi-track recordings on a windows 10 PC. And I'm looking for software advice. Basically all I need is 4 tracks-Vocal & Guitar plus possible overdub of mando and/or banjo. I've used multitrack reel to reel & Minidisc in the past so I'm not new to this, but I'm looking for some software that doesn't take a weekend of reading and experimenting to do what i need it to do - the simpler the better. Also free or cheap would be helpful. Do any of you have any suggestions or experience with "what's out there" ???
