Hi, Dick - could the song be Welcome Poor Paddy Home? I did find a listing for a song called "Welcoming Paddy Home" that was recorded by the Boys of the Lough, and I'm wondering if it could be the same. Remember any lyrics from the song?

I know it's not the answer to the question, but the song was performed beautifully on what is probably an impossible album to find these days called Dancin' To The Ceili Band, recorded by The Bucks in 1994. The main players on the album were Ron Kavana, Terry Woods and Paddy Keenan. There was some gorgeous concertina playing by (I suspect) Terry Woods. He and Ron Kavana do the singing. The title used was Hurray Me Boys Hurray, but it is the song described above. It's credited to Ron and Terry, but that's Ron for you! 😉

I checked "Welcome Poor Paddy Home" on Harry Fox Agency's songfile.com website. The Website lists the following as "writers": BRIAN PATRICK MC DONAGH, SHANE PATRICK MCALEER, MICHAEL PAUL HOLMES, JOHN JAMES MITCHELL, CATHERINE JORDAN, WILLIAM PAUL KELLY

Harry Fox Agency song code W75011
Publisher: Soundrights Music

Of course, this could be rights to an arrangement and not to the original song, but Harry Fox is usually a pretty good place to start.

Harry Fox also lists a song titled "Welcome Paddy Home," HFA #W61036, by John Murphy, published by Tunecore Digital Music. It was recorded by the Tin Sandwich Band on an album titled By Hook or by Crook.

I haven't had any luck finding definitive roots for this song. I'm guessing it was American-Irish, early 20th century. The lyrics I've found are amazingly similar - all seem to be almost exactly the same as the lyrics in the Digital Tradition. One would think we could find this in a songbook somewhere, but no cigar.
This page (click) says that the song was written by Charles J. Kickham, who also wrote "Slievenamon."

thanks joe, i had suspicion it was either p j mcCall or c j kickham 1828 1882, which would make it mid 19 century

I don't recall a mention in McCall's biography (it has no index, unfortunately). Kickham is a possibility - but my instinct is a bit doubtful.

Regards

If we are to trust the writer/author, whoever it might be, then the song was written most likely in America by an Irishman thinking of home. Kickham did spend time in New York and Chicago. However, unless someone can locate the original first stanza, then we may never know. Kickham was born in Mullinahone, County Tipperary. Locate a stanza that reads "a Tipperary town" and then that may be a place from which to start. (Note to self.)

Kickham, Wikipedia says, was born in "Mullinahone, County Tipperary."

The song may have been in existence in 1881:

Reading [Pa.] Times (Oct. 18, 1881) p.1:

"J. George Seltzer [a local lecturer] concluded by saying,

Oh! Scotland may boast of the thistle,
Old England boast of the rose,
But give to me that sunny bright spot,
Where the dear little shamrock grows."

Hi, Lighter. I think I saw another of the stanzas elsewhere, although not necessarily connected with/to this particular song. Frankly, the song looks a bit scrabbled together.

Might be worth a look.

No mention of the song at first glance.

There seem to be no agreed-upon lyrics for the third line of the first stanza.

WELCOME POOR PADDY HOME 3/4 (Capo on 5th fret)

D      A       G    D
I am a true born Irishman
D         A         D
I'll never deny what I am
D             A            G          D
I was born in a sweet Tipperary town
D             A       D
Three thousand miles away

-Chorus-
D         A       D
So hurray, me boys, hurray
D             A             G A
No more do I wish for to roam
D                A             G       D
For the sun it will shine in the harvest time
D               A      D
For to welcome poor Paddy home

D                A      D
Now the girls they are gay and frisky
D             A       G A
They'll take you by the hand
D               A          G          D
Saying Jimmy mo chroi would you come home with me
D                A       D
For to welcome poor Paddy home

-Chorus-

Well, in came the foreign nation
And scattered all over the land
The horse and the cow, the sheep, pig and the sow
Fell into the stranger's hand

-Chorus-

the scotsman he has the thistle
the englishman he has the rose
And Paddy he has the Emerald Isle
Where his dear little shamrock grows.

now if there are small differences in the lyrics, that is surely part of the folk process

John Moulden on a 2000 thread:

"'Welcome poor Paddy Home' went from Willie McElroy to Cathal McConnell to everybody else."

He mentions songs written "in the past fifteen years," but it's not clear whether he means to include this one.

Elsewhere, Malcolm Douglas located McElroy in "Brookborough, County Fermanagh." He also sang "The Hills of Donegal."

I don't have any "facts" about this, beyond the observation that in the Fenian times (mid-nineteenth century) there were other songs, like "Will You Come to the Bower" which were meant to encourage emigrant Irish men to return and fight for Ireland's independence. This song seems to fit right in to that campaign.
