This weekend British Home Stores has closed its doors for the last time. This means that every store that made West Ealing the main shopping area in the 60s and 70s has either closed down, or moved (Rouses - Woolworths - Marks & Spencer - BHS, and replaced by the likes of Poundland, Brighthouse.

Surely now this means that a line can be drawn under the company's losses brought about by being milked when it was in profit, and mismanaged thereafter, and registered on a mutual basis (crowd ownership), gradually reopening the stores and reinstating the British Home Stores brand, without the burden of the previous debts and liabilities.

That'll be great for the suppliers owed money.

It would be a completely different legal entity, the suppliers would need to lean on Green & Chappell.

Yeah, which is going to happen because they've all got pots of cash to pursue rich capitalist w*nkers through the law courts.

Being a small suppler or sole trader in this fetid amoral midden of a society is bad enough as it is without these arseh*les getting away with this sort of thing.

That's why we need the DTI to be given real teeth so that if necessary they can seize Green a Chappell's assets to cover the unsecured debtors identified by the administrator - either as cash or as reallocation of shares they hold in other companies.

True, and legislation to ensure payments within 30 days to sole traders and small businesses too. It's amazing the debt burden we shoulder for the rich. The directors should be personally liable - Green is little more than a crook.

From a consumer point of view..

our local branch never stocked any clothes in sizes that would fit the more amply proportioned older gentleman..

The male clothing assistant was a tiny skinny young lad who looked about 12 years old,
and probably had a waist size less than Twiggys...

Maybe he was in charge of ordering stock...???

Whatever, the clothes would only fit the young bloke demographic
that would never be seen dead shopping for fashion in BHS.

So conclusion, BHS was buggered from the top down and ground up....????

I'll add before I forget again...

That branch of BHS was slap in the middle of the high street of a large town noted for it's dominant fairly affluent retired community..

Ideal customer base, yet the shop never stocked appropriate sized men's wear...???
