Hi everyone

I'm Emma, Michael's wife and I came across this thread by chance and am touched by your kindness and comments. It's been almost three months since Michael passed away. I miss him terribly and particularly his determination and pedantry to get to the real truth, as he saw it. It didn't always matter who was right just that it was discussed, he loved pitting his wits intellectually against anyone. He loved Mudcat and although I didn't ever read or see any of his postings in here I knew he was passionate about the detail and would sit for hours typing away and to-ing and fro-ing about most topics.
I remember whenever there were any comments about his work or fine repuation as a writer, or his You Tube videos, his face would light up with pride and so would mine. Pride that he chose me, pride I was good enough to share his life, and pride because he was the most wondeful man any girl could have. I was the lucky one. His music will live on, so will his love of people and life.

I still miss his presence and his contributions to the many topics we squabble over on this forum. He was truly one of a kind and I, for one, consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to interact with him, if only through a keyboard. May his memory be a blessing.

Hi Emma - glad you made it here to read all about Michael and his Mudcat doings. Whether one agreed or disagreed with him, it was always a pleasure to debate with him. He was full of knowledge - and wit. I disagreed with him on many things - and agreed with him on many others. Whatever our respective positions on any topic, we always stayed friends.

Many of us here miss him, though of course we can never miss him as you do - but, as you can imagine, I'm also checking this post for typos and grammatical errors...

I don't think I ever crossed his path, but that is my great loss.

Michael contributed to many threads with wit and courtesy.

Emma, I hope you come back and read some of the threads he contributed to. There's a lot of stupidity and bile to wade through but you can easily skip this.

You should be able to easily find his contributions by typing his handle in the search box.

MGM.Lion made 14,096 posts since August 2009 & I enjoyed reading the ones I came across. I assumed he had been around much longer.

My friend the distinguished folklorist Bob Thompson [with whom I visited, & collected from Harry Cox - see the definitive Topic "Bonny Labouring Boy" Harry Cox collection] once said to me that he thought the association of seamen with the concertina was one of those bits of 'folklore about folklore', no older than Bert Lloyd's partnership with Alf Edwards; but he changed his mind when I pointed out the concertina-playing pirate in Barrie's 'Peter Pan' [1904], and the ref to sailors 'dancing to the wheezy music of the concertina' in the penultimate paragraph of Somerset Maugham's 'The Moon & Sixpence' [1919]. The concertina is a small but robust, portable but powerful instrument, small enough to fit into a sailor's dunnage without taking up too much of limited fo'csle space, &, unlike the harmonica to which it is so closely related [particularly in its anglo avatar], usable by a singer for simultaneous accompaniment.

OMG thank you all for your kind words and the links to the you tube videos, that I remember recording all 40 odd songs of in 2010 in the space of two months! I'm glad that Michael recorded them for others to enjoy forever.

On the day of the funeral I chose him singing 'Magdelene Green' on the way in so to speak and 'The Tailor in the Tea Chest' when the ceremony was finished. I love both of those songs best for different reasons. Both were from his studio CD which I think was recorded in the 80's or 90's when he was still at his peak vocally. I'm not a folkie at all but I am a musician/singer/songwriter so I appreciate all it stands for and when it is sung well, as i do any genre of vocal music. The nearest I get to listen to are modern folk/pop bands like Katzenjammer who played the Cambridge Folk Festival, but I realise there is a big divide between traditional folksters and what is allowed to loosely be called "folk" music nowadays :) I played their CD to Michael and although not his style, he always equally appreciated a good melody and lyrics.

His concertinas and guitar have stayed in the family so that he can be remembered playing them so well.

Yes I will pop back in now and then, although I don't have anywhere near as much time as Michael had to contribute and read the threads but I will try and learn something from you all.

I refreshed this thread because I was pleased to hear one of Mike's recordings on a California folk radio program this week. I wonder how the radio host got the recording.
