A search of Mudcat forum threads gets a LOT of posts if it is done on Leon Russell's name. The Mudcat membership paid attention to his songwriting catalog. I will leave it to others to link to obits online.

I watch his live "Delta Lady" video frequently. An all time favorite of mine. Also he wrote "Superstar" another classy pop song.

The Carpenters! That tells you I'm not young any more, that I remember the Carpenters! That sibling duo, who were wildly successful and recognized, did a lot to put Leon Russell's songwriting on the map. They recorded "This Masquerade" years before George Benson had a breakout single with it. Karen Carpenter's voice is the one I remember when I recall "A Song for You." That act knew quality songwriting when they saw it. I could guess that back in the day, a lot of people listening to the Carpenters or to MOR slash Musak sounds, would never have guessed what kind of fellow wrote those songs.
