Any truth in the rumour that the Music Room in Clecky is closing

They are selling off instruments at really great prices at an alarming rate, supposedly in time for Christmas but who knows, it always was the most expensive shop for everything, this policy may have backfired, Eagle Music, not far away in Huddersfield has always been considerably cheaper for the same things.

You clearly don't understand Mudcat. A rumour here is always preferable to a definitive answer from the source.

If they were closing they might have reason not to announce it.

Which doesn't make rumours any more helpful.

(I would add that they were remarkably unfriendly when I spoke to them at Whitby this year - I've never dealt with them anywhere else).

"If they were closing they might have reason not to announce it."...

and.. GUEST if as you curtly suggest, any joe public were to directly ask a business if rumours are true they are imminently closing down ?

you'd expect a straight honest answer...!!!??? 🙄

Maybe, GUEST needs a cold hard business reality check...

'Closing Down Sale',....????

Well.. if you are privy to such information then why did you not just provide a sensible helpful response to the thread OP selby...????

In the meantime the website still boldly announces it's

"AUTUMN SALE NOW ON!

SELECTED ITEMS WHILST STOCKS LAST"

I understand the present partnership is breaking up but no news onto whether one or other of partners will continue the business. Never been the same since it was Mally's Music anyway.

I pop in fairly often. They sell guitars a friend makes (Reiner) and I go with him to help him rotate stock etc, as well as occasionally buying instruments anyway. Hugh is very helpful.

They have always had sales on. The other year, they were selling off Eastman guitars at half price and I got a good deal. A few months ago, a mandolin at a knockdown price. Obviously they must have a core profitable side or they would have died off years ago. The knockdown prices are nothing new and whilst I have heard of changes in business ownership, I have also heard "going concern" so fingers crossed they remain.

Murpholly (see above ) is quite correct, the partnership is being dissolved, and looks as though its being separated into at least two concerns, one oh which is a specialist melodeon making/selling business, whether the main general instrument business continues remains to be seen.

They have just treated me like shit. Took my money and delivered a cheaper item. Attempts to sort things out just got met with total obstruction. After three days of stalling and rudeness, they have finally admitted that the have not got the stock despite taking my money and confirming the order. I am a past customer and never had a problem. If the regime has changed, the new lot are acting like a bunch of crooks.

They have now said they had no stock (despite confirming the order, taking my money and advising item despatched). N o explanation of why a cheaper model was sent. They said via email that they are refunding my money through paypal. No apology for the shit treatment. They originally told me that they would collect the wrong item and deliver the correct one at the same time. They collected the wrong item rapidly alright, but did not deliver the correct item as promised. I have no paypal account so I responded to the mail with a demand for them to explain how I get the money. So far, no answer. THEY ARE A BUNCH OF CROOKS! From the comment above by GUEST,Rewster; it seems to me that they are liquidating and don't give a fook. Does any one have any information on who the partners are and any contact details?

This quite interesting. They are still offering the instrument I paid for (now stated by them to be out of stock) for sale on their website at the price I paid them. Out of curiosity, I went through the purchasing process, and was taken as far as entering the card details and confirming the purchase. I did not complete of course! How can they take an order and payment for an item they have stated is out of stock and will not be replaced? Seems like a fraudulent attempt to get whatever money they can before they liquidate or simply disappear. Don't buy anything on line from these dubious people. I've given them until noon tomorrow to answer my mail. If they don't I am taking official action through trading standards. I will track them down believe me!!! To add insult to injury, I got an unsolicited mail from them today, trying to get me to buy discounted traditional style ukes!

I have just checked the status of the Music Room with Companies House (it is quite a simple procedure) and the company is listed as dormant with two directors and one secretary / director who also happens to be one of the directors!

If the company you are referring to is still trading then an accurate trading name would be useful in order to ascertain just who is in charge and whether they are trading legally.

The Vat people would proobably be more than interested if there is any skulldugery going on.

Partners: John Turner & Martin Banks. John turner originally had 'sounds Interesting' - a festival only music instrument outlet. Martin Banks still has 'Oakwood' - manufacturing melodeons, and stringed instruments, based in Oakwood, Leeds. They bought ' Dave Mallinson Music' in Cleckheaton from Mally many years ago and changed the name to The Music Room. John & Martin are related by marriage, ( though not to each other )

They sell guitars made by a friend of mine. When I heard, we went together last week to retrieve unsold stock.

Hugh has left.

All rather sad really. I have bought a few instruments off them recently and came close last week to walking out with a BSG baritone guitar.

Now it becomes really strange.
John & Martyn (note the y) are indeed the two directors listed for the company registered with companies house.

It quite specifically shows the company as being dormant and has done for a number of years. So unless someone can come up with an actual trading name from an invoice say then if things are going wrong then it would appear that no redress would be possible from the company listed.

From this, I would suggest that the dormancy of the company implies that the current trading is done in some other form - probably a partnership. Because a company exists does not make it compulsory to use it. Certainly there is nothing on the web site to suggest that the Limited Company is trading.
The sad thing is that they are asking us to ring before going over, as they say that may not have enough staff to open up.

I've always found them very good and helpful in the past. I bought my concertina from them some years ago and I've bought ukuleles from them at Whitby and found them generally helpful. When I bought a banjo uke, it had poor strings with a particularly dead G string and they gave me a replacement set of strings with no quibbles.

I've just ordered a banjo ukulele and a case for it from their sale stock. I'm assuming it's a clearance sale as the prices are a little silly. The order confirmation has come through but I'm waiting for the payment confirmation from Pay Pal. That should come through soon if it's all OK but it's on my other email address so I have to wait for the auto forwarding to kick in.

We'll see.

If you are concerned about the safety of online payments it seems to be safer to use a credit card rather than debit or PayPal

If this is true it's sad news indeed. I have frequently used the shop and bought everything from Guitar strings to a Melodeon and much in between. Autoharp, Guitar, Concertina (twice) dulcimer, Bodhran and yet more strings and plectrums.
I hope everything is sorted out to the satsifaction of everyone.I have never had any doubts they were less than scruplously honest traders.

I do hope I am not proved wrong.
