Incidental-o, anyone know the origins of this jolly song, The Lark in the Morning, as sung by the Dubliners and basically everyone else in Ireland?

I enjoyed the songs and so on in the Black and White Minstrel Show; however, with black friends now, I'd be more conscious that apparently black people didn't perform on it (and they could have done with the work), but instead it was only white men with their hands and faces painted black in a kind of mocking imitation.

Another song titled UP WITH THE LARK IN THE MORNING has been posted in another thread. This one was written and performed by the British music hall performer Harry Clifton around 1870.

I told my sister that mudcat was the place to get help - you have come up trumps again. Funnily enough in our conversations about the past the 'Black and White Minstrel Show' came up and we remarked that while it is not an 'appropriate' show for today, we just enjoyed the songs and the show.

Was he the guy who used ot sing under the name "the chocolate-coloured coon", in the days when that was less horrifying to decent people than today?

A really old song, only recognized it because an uncle used to sing it. Enjoy.

My sister and I were reminiscing about songs sung at family parties when we were young - a long time ago! One song our father, Michael McCabe, sang was 'I'll be up with the lark in the morning'. It went:

Sleepy head I used to be called when I was just a lad
Sleepy head I used to be called each morning by my dad
But my sleepy days are over and to them I've said goodbye
Soon I'll be in clover and here's the reason why
I'll be up with the lark in the morning with a song in my heart as I roam
I'll be up with the lark in the morning on my way to home sweet home.

We were trying to get a copy of someone singing it to add to our collection but could not find even a reference to the song anywhere.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
