I imagine both my husband and myself would be regarded as potential 'enemies of the US' as we have both visited Libya and he's a Muslim with a very Muslim name, as well as his being black and a dual-passport holder, all of which would look a bit iffy to the paranoid.
It's a real pity as we did have a wish to visit America one day (never been there before) We've changed our plans now, and have earmarked Australia and New Zealand as possible destinations for the future.

As a school cleaner, my husband has an impeccable record (vetted of course by his employers) It's not right that an innocent man should be viewed suspiciously because he's black and a Muslim, and has dual nationality.

That's reassuring Helen. My husband has always wanted to see Australia, and of course I'd be very happy to accompany him if the opportunity arose. Well we went to Oz just the once, to visit rellies in Perth. We loved Perth and we loved the country, but we did not love the "welcome" we endured at Perth airport, where we were kept waiting, totally static, standing up, no information forthcoming, in the passport hall in humid 90-degree heat for well over an hour, in a room with walls plastered with signs that stopped just short of telling us that we might have our heads cut off if we were found to have so much of a pork chop in our hold bag. Treated like criminals, basically, along with everyone else on our flight, the majority of whom had been travelling for at least twenty hours. Welcome to the colony!

Yes you're right David. I've watched TV programmes about Australia's Immigration and Control, and they quite justifiably protect their agriculture from diseases brought in by travellers in food, plants, dried fish and so on. It's silly of people to disobey the rules; they're presented with a list of banned things, and it's up to passengers to declare/avoid having forbidden goods on them.

I'm not surprised if Trump has resorted to underhand activity to forward his own ends. He strikes me as a thoroughly corrupt and bent individual.

I reckon being black, a Muslim, having dual-nationality (even though Ivory Coast isn't on the banned list) and having a Libya entry stamp on a UK passport might flag up some awkward responses from any visa application officials in USA. Best for us to stay away!

I was on a flight to New Zealand from the U.S. Our entire plane was sprayed down and our luggage gone through which all took some time as it was a 747. My best recommendation to get an unbiased look at Oz is to check out our (government-funded) broadcaster, ABC.com.au/News

As a government funded broadcaster you might think that it is biased towards the government, but our ABC is fearless in presenting unbiased facts. She is affectionately known as Aunty ABC.

An American friend once said that he never knew the half of what was happening in the U.S. until he came here and saw the news in our media.

While I sympathise with your sentiments Helen, we need to remember that not so long ago 49.7% of the Austrian people voted for an Ultra Right party and the only reason Austria didn't proceed America as the first Country to elect such a party is they were foiled by a coalition government.
I'm sure most Austrians are as reasonable as most Americans, but it only takes a demagogue in the right situation to whip up a crowd to allow evil things to happen - Austria, with its history of 'Austrofascism , should be more than aware of that

We do have a very strange political party called One Nation which probably comes under the heading of Australiofascism. It's headed up by a very strange little bod called Pauline Hanson, who unfortunately has enough of a following to find herself back in parliament after we got rid of her first time around.

I don't think Oz is completely safe from fascism, but it seems to be a bit more immunised against it than some other places in the world.

My theory is that because we laugh at everyone, even when we think what they are saying has some merit, it is very hard for any straight-faced politicians - like our friend Pauline - to be taken seriously.

We have the situation here in Europe where the supra-right is taking every opportunity offered to them by the populism that gave us Brexit and Trump - both events have been followed by a rise in racist incidents.
I have a great respect for any national leader who puts the phone down on this moron, but I have to say I'm not entirely happy that it over treating refugees like pawns in a chess game.
As you say, Australia has it's share of right-wing brain-deads, as shown by the Cronulla Riots, but there doesn't seem to be the same level of problem as in Britain or the US.
The irony is that America is made up of the people Trum refers to as "aliens" - if everybody had their own, America would have a Native American Parliament and Australia would have a very different leadership and culture - for better or worse.
Creating and using divisions between different peoples has become a major weapon in the scramble for power.
The thugs are using our greatest asset, our diversity, as a club to set us one against the other.
