I tried to post this on the established thread
http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=3009
but it didn't post

Just found a version of this from Maine in the Flanders archive, recorded circa 1942. It is listed and sung as the Brave Privateer. It's badly recorded, but I got enough of it to identify it as a variation of Jamie / Jimmy Foyers. In some older versions of the song, he is a "halberdier". Apparently the Maine singer, Jack McNally, heard "privateer" .
There is a reference to "Robert Perry as you stand in campaign"
another line
"I wisht I had some water out of a clear cold well"

The tune is nice

I will post more as I decipher it

YOu can hear it here

It starts at about 30:25

best- Julia
