'Nobody here was maligning tourists, Anonymous GUEST'

There was perhaps the irony of coming to a place as a tourist not wanting to appear one?

Most advertised sessions will be in place to draw in the punters, tourists or otherwise, it's the only incentive for pub owners to have them in the first place.

Thanks, Freddy and Dick :)

(Nobody here was maligning tourists, Anonymous GUEST.

I have many years' experience of playing and singing in sessions in Ireland with friends and relations who run same, and I am looking for something similar now, rather than an event for tourists to listen to and clap along with. While there is some overlap, they are generally two very different animals.

Happy to discuss this concept with you if you put a name to your opinions.)

Newmarket, historically known as Aghatrasna (Irish: Áth Trasna), is a town in the Barony of Duhallow, County Cork, Ireland. It is situated at the junction of the R576 and R578 regional roads
Scully's Bar in Newmarket has been hosting a weekly session on Monday evenings for the past 40 years.

a lot of places in the west of Ireland would be much worse off without the mucxh-maligned 'tourists'

I saw you recommend that in another thread, leenia.
I'm looking for a locals' session though, rather than one aimed at tourists.

Thanks anyway, and thanks all for the input.

When I visited Ireland, I found two good sources. One is the front deks of a local hotel. The other is the Tourist Information Office. Ask if there is any "Traditional" being played.

In Scotland, a poster in the Youth Hostel window led us a wonderful little festival.

I was in Buckleys, Killarney Arbutus Hotel I think a few weeks ago. A place often recommended for good sessions. There was a small group who I believe attend a few nights a week. They were excellent musicians with some great tunes. But when it came to songs they were a big disappointment. They same hackneyed repertoire you'll hear in every tourist bar in the country, whether Temple Bar, Shop street, Galway or Kinsale. Wild Rover, Molly Malone, etc. Finished up with Long Way to Tipperary/Pack up your troubles. I heard only one Kerry song. The singer was very good and I suppose they were playing what they thought the audience wanted to hear, but couldn't they mix it a bit for God's sake.

That's my cranky view of what I think you'll find in a lot of places advertising "Trad". But I have to admit the visitors seem to love it.

If I could get to Dingle, I'd visit O'Sullivan's Courthouse Pub. Owned and operated by a fine singer and guitarist, Tommy O'Sullivan, and his lovely wife (who's from Texas). They feature musicians there every night:

From all you need to know about Kerry website:Would need to confirm first though. It may not be totally accurate by now.

Traditional Music in County Kerry

Visiting County Kerry and stuck for something to do in the evening? You could do worse than head out into a local pub (which, be default, will be an "original Irish pub") and then join a traditional Irish session? Most sessions start at around 9:30 pm or whenever a few musicians have gathered. Call ahead because the days and times may recently have changed.

Ballybunion - "Cliff House Hotel" - every day
Caherciveen - "Park Hotel" - Friday and Saturday
Caherdaniel - "Derrynane Hotel" - Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday
    Castleisland - "Tagney's" - Thursday
Dingle - "Conair Bar" - Monday, Wednesday to Friday and Sunday; "Droichead Beag" - every day; "Skellig Hotel" - Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday
Fenit - "The Tankard" - Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday
    Finugue - "Angler's Rest" - Saturday
Glenbeigh - "The Red Fox" - Wednesday and Friday to Sunday
Glencar - "The Climber's Inn" - Thursday to Sunday
Kenmare - "Kenmare Bay Hotel" - every day; "Lansdowne Arms" - Thursday and Friday
Killarney - "Arbutus Hotel" - every day; "Castle Ross Hotel" - Tuesday and Wednesday, Friday to Sunday; "Gleneagle Hotel" - every day; "Killarney Heights" - every day; "Killarney Tower" - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday; "Lake Hotel" - Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday; "O'Donoghue's Bar" - Friday
Killorglin - "The Fishery" - Thursday to Sunday
Tralee - "Bailey's Corner Pub" - Tuesday; "Betty's Bar" - Friday to Sunday; "Grand Hotel" - Wednesday and Friday
    Waterville - "Butler's Arms Hotel" - Thursday

Indeed, in Dingle I enjoyed O'Flaherty's.
For the cosy atmosphere I could have sat in Curran's for a week or two. And there was a little bit of music there on the couple of evenings I popped in, not till 9.00/9.30 if I remember.

I know it's a distance from Waterville, but o'Flahertys in Dingle is a great place for music. The Boss man is a VERY good musician on Guitar, Banjo, Accordion, Flute and probably others.

Flying visit (well, ferry really) over to County Kerry in June with my (grown-up) children, between Sat 10th and Thursday 15th June.

Main purpose is a long-awaited visit to Skellig Michael, but I'd love to take in a pub session- anyone know of anything going on that week, please?
All information gratefully received.
