Subject: BS: Mass Rescue of Defenceless Civilians From: robomatic Date: 21 Jun 17 - 07:07 PM Post WWI famine in Soviet Russia: The Hero- Herbert Hoover I'm willing to bet that more Mudcatters are aware of this than not, but just in case, this show, which aired a few years ago, goes into the depth and breadth which might be greater and longer than you were aware of. He lived as a long time ex-President, and in my memory was not a well lauded one. But it cannot be denied he accomplished great things in his lifetime. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mass Rescue of Defenceless Civilians From: pdq Date: 21 Jun 17 - 08:48 PM According to George Nash, Hoover's biographer, "Hoover was really the vanguard of that whole approach that has become associated with America in the last hundred years, namely that when there is a humanitarian tragedy in the world, whether from war or famine or revolution or a typhoon or an earthquake, that Americans will be there to organize the relief." |

It's to a Stanford University newsletter, not to a documentary, as I first thought. It can be read in a few minutes, and it's an eye opener. |

After the First World War, he was in charge of the exchanges of 400,000 prisoners of war between Russia, Germany, and the former Austria-Hungary. Nansen also engaged in humanitarian relief work in 1921, during the severe famine in the Soviet Union. His work on behalf of prisoners of war and starving people earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. |
