Oh, Canada!

You've been a formidable opponent and a wonderful neighbor. Your scenery is unbeatable, your common sense the most uncommon in America, your friendliness world-wide, your humor among the best in the Anglo-French world, your freedoms uncompromised.

Even your political cautionary tales (Rob Ford) have been meant in the best of ways.

When my car broke down on the way to Alaska, who stopped for me? Canadians? When I landed my plane at desk on an empty airfield in B.C., who drove over to take me home to tea? Canadians.

And we Yanks won't forget the Canadian diplomats who rescued six of our Iranian hostages.

I promise to look after our Canadian guests, even the Quebecers, and if our people ever vote to invade you again, I will vote against it.

My great- grandparents and earlier generations left Canada to work in the US. Now I wish I could leave it for Canada!

meself, I can get Canadian beer here. Any of it except that made in a bathtub or in someone's basement. Of course, I can easily get Canadian Whiskey -- Indio Spirits makes it in Portland, Oregon. Teas? -- King Cole is available in several flavo(u)rs, so is Red Rose, Murchies, Salada, Maple, David, Lipton, Tetley -- all those Canadian teas. Of course, Canada doesn't seem to have good coffee, except, if you're lucky, Tim Horton's (available in my local stores, along with Dunkin Donuts).

If I really, really want a cup of Canadian tea I'll just put the kettle on and brew some up, eh?

Thank you for the Canada Day greetings. Happy Independence Day tomorrow to you. Speaking of beer, we have some very nice brew-pubs, microbreweries, and liquor distilleries in Nova Scotia. A beer that I enjoy is the Raven Scottish Ale at Paddy's Pub which has locations in Kentville, Wolfville and a new one in Windsor. Paddy's is an Irish themed pub that has lots of Celtic jam sessions. It's lots of fun.
