Subject: The Blue Velvet Band
From: topical tom
Date: 15 Aug 17 - 03:46 PM

Back in the day(as they say) I first heard this song. There are at least 3 versions and an Irish song entitled "THE BLACK VELVET BAND".

This is the version I first heard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io2tL51UD0c

Here is another version: "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QNYL-3u1E0

As I mentioned, there is also "The Girl in the Black Velvet Band. What other songs have clothing in their titles?

'BLUE BONNETS OVER THE BORDER'
'TOP HAT, WHITE TIE AND TAILS'
'Come under my Plaidie'
'On Ilkley Moor Baht 'At'
'The White Cockade' is more an ornament than an article of clothing, but the same could be said of the original black velvet band!

Just for further information here are lines that I have not found in "The Little Shirt KMy Mother Made for Me "   Then came the day that   we were finally wed...We made a handsome couple they all said...While standing beside my bride in church...I heard a rip. then gave a awful lurch...The people stared and all the bridesmaids fainted...And some were taking pictures I could see...Twas a lucky thing for me that I was wearing...The little shirt my mother made for me.

Coughton Court still has the coat (or a modern facsimile). Sheared dyed, dried, spun, woven and tailored in 24 hours, for a wager. Throckmorton Coat & here too. A modern song by Bryn Phillips
song - the Throckmorton Coat at an event to re-create the "coat in a day" wager.

the Portway Pedlers used to sing a different song with a chorus "how do you like my blue". Their son was director of Chippenham Folk Festival until last year. Can't find the lyrics.

& my song Knittershanty first on list.

An amazingly simple song. The Royal Teens were a one-hit wonder; they never made an album.

SHORT SHORTS
Words and music by Burt Bacharach & Hal David
As recorded by The Royal Teens, 1958.
(Female voices are in parentheses.)

Who wears short shorts?
(We wear short shorts!)
They're such short shorts!
(We like short shorts!)
Who wears short shorts?
(We wear short shorts!)

REPEAT. REPEAT.

A WHITE SPORT COAT
Words and music by Marty Robbins
As recorded by Marty Robbins, 1957.

A white sport coat and a pink carnation—
I'm all dressed up for the dance.
A white sport coat and a pink carnation—
I'm all alone in romance.

Once you told me long ago
To the prom with me you'd go.
Now you've changed your mind, it seems.
Someone else will hold my dreams.

A white sport coat and a pink carnation—
I'm in a blue blue mood.

REPEAT.

The Bonnets of Bonnie Dundee written by Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832)

Come fill up my cup, come fill up my can;               5
Come saddle your horses, and call up your men;
Come open the Westport and let us gang free,
And it's room for the bonnets of bonnie Dundee!

Subject: Lyr Add: BELL BOTTOM BLUES (Teresa Brewer)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 08 Sep 17 - 05:40 PM

GUEST,Richard might have had Eric Clapton's song in mind when he mentioned BELL BOTTOM BLUES, but I found this when looking it up:

BELL BOTTOM BLUES
Words by Hal David; music by Leon Carr, 1953.
As recorded by Teresa Brewer, 1953.

I got the bell-bottom blues 'cause my sweetie is a sailor
And he's sailin' somewhere on the sea.
I got the bell-bottom blues 'cause I'm crazy 'bout a sailor
And I don't know when he's comin' back to me.

I shake my head and refuse when the fellers come a-callin'
And they want to take me on a date.
I got the bell-bottom blues; while the other gals are fallin',
I just sit around the livin' room and wait.

I wonder if he's lookin' at the same moon I'm lookin' at,
Ev'ry night I'm lookin' at the moon.
I know if he's prayin' for the same thing I'm prayin' for,
We'll be together soon.

I got the bell-bottom blues just a-waitin' for a letter.
Heaven knows I'm lonely as can be.
I got the bell-bottom blues and I won't be feelin' better
Till my sailor boy comes sailin' home to me.

[Also recorded by Alma Cogan, and by Ted Heath and His Orchestra, with Lita Roza vocalist.]

TOP HAT, WHITE TIE AND TAILS
Written by Irving Berlin for the film "Top Hat" (1935) where it was introduced by Fred Astaire.
As recorded by Fred Astaire

I just got an invitation through the mails:
"Your presence requested this evening; it's formal, with top hat, white tie and tails."
Nothing now could take the wind out of my sails,
Because I'm invited to step out this evening with top hat, white tie and tails.

Oh, I'm puttin' on my top hat, tyin' up my white tie, brushin' off my tails.
I'm dudin' up my shirt front, puttin' in my shirt studs, polishing my nails.
I'm steppin' out, my dear, to breathe an atmosphere that simply reeks with class,
And I trust that you'll excuse my dust when I step on the gas;
For I'll be there, puttin' down my top hat, mussin' up my white tie, dancing in my tails.

OLD BLUE SUIT
Written by Jerry Rasmussen
As recorded by Jerry Rasmussen* on "The Secret Life of Jerry Rasmussen" (1985)

1. When he was a boy, just sixteen years,
Burstin' at the elbows, wet behind the ears,
Papa called him in and he sat him in a chair,
Sayin': "Son, I think it's time you had a suit to wear."

CHORUS: It was his old blue suit, the one he used to wear
With the pants all shiny and the cuffs worn bare.
He never had much but he always bought the best,
And in his old blue suit today they're layin' him to rest.

2. Ev'ry Friday evenin' drivin' into town,
In his thirty-seven Chevy with the top rolled down,
Wavin' at the ladies, give his horn a toot,
A-sittin' there a-beamin' in his old blue suit. CHORUS

3. A wedding or a fun'ral, a party or a dance.
You better brush the jacket; don't forget to press the pants.
Polish on his shoes, Vitalis on his hair,
And he always looked his finest ev'ry time he'd wear: CHORUS: His old blue suit....

4. Down at the feed store only yesterday,
Ev'ryone was talkin' 'bout how he passed away,
And when he meets Peter on the golden stairs,
I guess I don't have to tell you what he'll wear: CHORUS: His old blue suit....

* with Mark Farrell, Tom Legenhausen, Pat Conte & Bill Dilloff.

Also recorded by:
Ann Mayo Muir (with Ed Trickett & Gordon Bok) on "So Goes My Heart" (1985)

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 20 May 18 - 09:02 PM

This song was mentioned by Cool Beans back on 16-Aug-2017. I ran across it today and decided we ought to have it posted here.

BLACK SLACKS
Words and music by Joe Bennett and Jimmy Denton
As recorded by Joe Bennett & the Sparkletones, 1957.

(Br-r-r-r-r!)
Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! Make it cool, daddy-o.
When I put 'em on I'm a-rarin' to go.

When I go places I just don't care.
You would know why if you'd see what I wear:
Black slacks! Take fourteen.
Black slacks! Really are mean.
Black slacks! Make it cool, daddy-o.
When I put 'em on I'm a-rarin' to go.

Man, you ought to see me with my derby on.
I know that you would say: "He's gone."
Black slacks! Mostly in the head.
Black slacks! Well, that's what I said.
Black slacks! I'm the cat's pajamas,
'Cause I run around with crazy little mamas.

Well, the girls all look when I go by.
It's what I wear that makes 'em sigh.
Black slacks! I wear a red bow tie.
Black slacks! They say: "Me, oh, my!"
Black slacks! With a cat chain down to my knees,
I ain't nothin' but a real cool breeze.

Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! (Br-r-r!)
Black slacks! Make it cool, daddy-o.
When I put 'em on I'm a-rarin' to go.
When I put 'em on I'm a-rarin' to go.
When I put 'em on I'm a-rarin' to go.

Black slacks! (Br-r-r!) [REPEAT AD LIB AND FADE]

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 21 May 18 - 12:09 PM

How could we overlook this so long, when there have been constant reminders of it?

You can hear this original recording at The Internet Archive.

BLUE VELVET
Words and music by Bernie Wayne and Lee Morris.
As recorded by Tony Bennett with Percy Faith and His Orchestra, 1951.

She wore blue velvet; bluer than velvet was the night.
Softer than satin was the light from the stars.
She wore blue velvet; bluer than velvet were her eyes,
Warmer than May her tender sighs; love was ours.
Ours a love I held tightly, feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly, but when she left, gone was the glow
Of blue velvet, but in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm a memory through the years,
And I still can see blue velvet through my tears.

Precious and warm a memory through the years,
And I still can see blue velvet through my tears.

[There were significant covers by The Clovers (1955), The Statues (1959), The Paragons (1960), Bobby Vinton (1963), Lawrence Welk (1963), Tony Bennett and k. d. lang (2011), Lana Del Rey (2012), and The Branford Marsalis Quartet with vocalist Kurt Elling (2016).]

Haitian Creole children's song

Mwen soti la ville Jacmel

My hat fell off,
My hat fell off,
My hat fell off,
Whoever is behind me,
Please pick it up for me.

I left the city of Jacmel
I went to La Vallée
When I got to the intersection at Bainet
My hat fell off!

Note: From the folklore surrounding the death in office of Haitian President Florvil Hyppolite (1828 - 1896) and the bad omen of a ruler dropping his crown.

Also heard as, the woman who picks up the hat becomes the man's wife.

Sailin' Shoes
(w&m Lowell George, 1972)

Lady in a turban, that cocaine tree
Does a dance so rhythmically
She's cryin', and a singin' and having a time
Gee that cocaine tree look fine

You've got to put on your sailin' shoes
Put on your sailing shoes
Everyone will start to cheer
When you put on your sailin' shoes

Jedidiah, he's got a dime
Says he catch a more fish, every time
Well I've got a line, you've got a pole
Well, well I'll meet you at the fishin' hole

You've got to put on your sailin' shoes
Put on your sailing shoes
Everyone will give praise
When you put on your sailin' shoes

Doctor, doctor, I feel so bad
This is the worst day, I ever had
He said “Have you this misery a very long time?
'Cause if you hip, I'll lay it on the line.”

You gotta to put on your sailin' shoes.
Put on your sailing shoes
Everyone will start to cheer
When you put on your sailin' shoes

Bob Gaudio wrote "Short Shorts," not Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Gaudio was one of the Royal Teens. They may have been a one-hit wonder but Gaudio went on to fame and (major) fortune as principal songwriter for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
