Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: punkfolkrocker Date: 07 Dec 17 - 09:15 AM Prague and Budapest were probably amongst the most romantic cities until Brit lager lout stag parties invaded and took them over... |
Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Steve Shaw Date: 07 Dec 17 - 09:19 AM We went to Prague in late October just before it turned into a hen and stag fleshpot. The weather was mild and sunny and it was lovely. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Dec 17 - 09:51 AM There are a few but locally both York and Chester would feature quite highly up my list. I agree about Chicago Donuel - Not been to many American cities but that was by far my favourite. Memphis was great but I am not sure it is a city and it is far from romantic! DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Jim Carroll Date: 07 Dec 17 - 12:33 PM "We went to Prague in late October " I loved Prague even though we were there at the same time as the Russian Troops in 1968 Never been sure I wanted to go back after a workmate told me how he was crossing Wenceslas Square when a young girl (about 14) approached him asked him for money and put her hand in his pocket and began fondling him. This was after 'freedom' came to Czechoslovakia, of course. Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Tattie Bogle Date: 07 Dec 17 - 08:53 PM Could be Edinburgh: where I live now and have done for the last 30+ years, but where I came with my husband before we were even married: little did we realise then that this was where we would settle! Then honeymoon included Dublin and Galway. Other favourites since would include Paris, St Petersburg, Granada, Cordoba, Pisa, Sydney (Aus), Prague, and Talinn. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Steve Shaw Date: 07 Dec 17 - 09:25 PM Ah, strolling around Granada, Cordoba and Antequera in the summer heat...the Alhambra by moonlight then the Generalife gardens the next morning... the Mesquita/Catedral in Cordoba...strolling across the old bridge over the Guadalquivir river... my God, that's what I CALL romantic! |
Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Jim Carroll Date: 08 Dec 17 - 03:48 AM I lived in London for thirty years - at first I hated it's anonymity and unfriendliness, but luckily I hooked up (for life) with a Scots Londoner who regarded London as "her village" and was not afraid to cross the Thames (as most Londoners appeared to be Together we used London just like that, quite often to the puzzlement of my workmates who seldom went outside their own immediate areas. Over seven years I worked as a maintenance electrician in Pubs and was introduced to an entirely hidden side of the City - smugglers tunnels, remnants of cock-pits, a tree growing up through the centre of the bar, a pub cellar that had collapsed into an unused underground railway, a beautiful huge bar-length gilded Victorian mirror which had been papered over during the Blitz and forgotten, only to be discovered while I was working there. I was making my way through a bar once, heading for the cellar, when a customer shouted "mind the ghost" The pub, adjacent to Wellington Barracks in Hyde Park, was said to have a tunnel which had been dug on the instructions of the Duke of Wellington, who was said to have been so unpopular with his men, he was unable to venture out at night for fear of being assaulted Then bricked in, the tunnel was claimed to be haunted by the ghost of a soldier who was flogged to death for assaulting him. London really was a fascinating city, if you managed to survive living there (couldn't afford it now) Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Steve Shaw Date: 10 Dec 17 - 06:27 AM Venice. La Serenissima. How could I have left Venice out! We didn't see a car for four days. Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Mr Red Date: 10 Dec 17 - 06:57 AM Wolverhampton in England Steve, the Gods still don't like you! You are still alive. Which school was it? I was at school in Wolverhampton, but we weren't allowed to see much of it, except on walks on Sunday to Bantock Park in crocodile fashion. It was an orphanage (those who lost one parent) and it was more like a boarding school. Sponsored by the Masons and the Lions. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Tattie Bogle Date: 10 Dec 17 - 07:43 AM I spent 7 years in London's East End: went for a walk with a former boyfriend in a park S of the river. So I always laugh at that line in Ewan McColl's "Sweet Thames, flow softly" - "Kissed her once again at Wapping, flow sweet river flow, After that there that there was no stopping, sweet Thames flow softly", It was only a walk in the park, honest, but how romantic! |

Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Steve Shaw Date: 10 Dec 17 - 08:34 AM I lived for two years in Robin Hood Gardens, a brutalist concrete monstrosity in Poplar, but I was very happy there. Out of my windows was the most amazing view of the entrance of the Blackwall Tunnel and a power station on the bank of the Thames just beyond the biggest scrapyard in Europe. I actually proposed to Mrs Steve in my flat and we lived there for the first year of our marriage. I believe they're preserving a piece of it now! Spent many a happy boozy evening in Wapping and Rotherhithe... My teaching practice in Wolverhampton was done at Deansfield High School, in early 1973. If that school's still there I'm sure it's much better now then it was then. |

Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: Jack Campin Date: 10 Dec 17 - 06:53 PM For me it would have to be Auckland, for rhe same sort of reasons (she had pale skin, freckles, Indian features, huge eyelashes and red-brown hair - apart from all the incredibly atmospheric nooks around the city) but I wasn't sorry to leave and I couldn't possibly afford to live there now. |
Subject: RE: BS: Your most romantic city From: frogprince Date: 11 Dec 17 - 11:13 PM For me, it's hard to choose between Old Quebec and Agios Prokopios, Naxos. Old Quebec has more inherent picturesque romantic flavor. Agios Prokopios is barely big enough to be defined as a village, but, especially if you include the beach, the personal memories are very special. I may have to go back, if only to scatter ashes along the beach. |
