Truth has many detailed fractal levels but basic truth can be both surprising and true or false.

Answer or not, make your own statements or not.

People glow brightly or dimly. Under low light conditions light can act acoustically with harmonics so invisible light can be seen with the naked human eye. Ergo we can appear to glow to others. true or not

Until Einstein we did not know what made the stars shine. true or not

The big bang was not a massive explosion. true or not.

Taco Bell has real nutrition. true or not

Voltaire said that, true or not

There can only be one truth, fractals can only approximate.

The answer to life is: Yes and No. The answer to The Universe is: Yes and No. The answer to Everything is: Yes and No. Yes and No are represented in binary by 1 and 0. Binary 101010 = decimal 42.

75% say the USA is going in the right direction. true or not
Are you asking whether it is true that USA is going in the right direction?
Or are you asking whether it is true that 75% say that it is?

And is that 75% of Americans, or 75% of the world population?

The idea that something can be both true and false only comes about because of badly worded questions.

Was the line quoted above even a question? It had no question mark at the end.

The problem with truth is:

do you mean the truth or the whole truth? There is a difference in the real world we live in. A court room is not the real world. It is words.

And is Trump facts the hole truth?
And the there is Fakebook.

And then there are half truths - true in themselves but altered in meaning by leaving out some pertinent detail.

The hairsplitting of the subject of truth is fascinating in
philosophy

Truth is unlike a mathematical reiteration in a fractal which is static from micro levels to the largest perspective possible.

In other words truth changes depending upon what size scale you are investigating.

In the broadest possible view our understanding of physics has a similar separation of the smallest scales/laws of "truths" compared to an ultra large view of the cosmos as filaments and clusters or neurons and dendrites. We each are made from the universe and are able to know a part of itself. This only seems to me to be a smart truth

It is remarkable the multiverse knows itself. From our perspective complete truth is still but a wish.

And now snap back to earth and a US president's relationship to truth which are noumenal beliefs and believability alone in which truth is only a flexible manufactured perception.
A very stupid truth in my eyes.

In my misspent youth, when I was studying linguistics and philosophy of language, I could NOT see the point of Tarski's definition:

"'Snow is white' is true if and only if snow is white."

"Well, duh," I thought.

Now the point not only makes perfect sense to me, it's a virtual bumper sticker.

Ha! I studied those two things as well Jackaroodave!! And Moral Philosophy. 'Self-Evident Truths' were never 'self-evident' to me. I was rather timid at the age of eighteen, but I recall sitting in the University tutorials frowning and thinking very hard. I didn't dare say anything, but to me nothing was/is indisputably true.

I love your Tarski's definition - I'd like it on my bumper too!

Professor: "Now is this proposition is self-evident or not?"
. . .
. . .
. . .
. . .
. . .
. . .
. . .
. . .
"Yes, it is self-evident."

In fact, one of my stats teachers' favorite questions after proposing a theorem was, "Is this obvious, or not?" It always was, but impenetrably, until he pointed out why.

Well, yes and no. What, after all, is Truth (cf. John, 18:38)? If it is as Descartes would have it, it is whatever I want it to be, and yet I can't run through a stone wall even if I think it is airy matter (apparently the wall thinks better than I do and therefore has more existence). Whether all this is true or not depends upon your point of view, perhaps.

We could make this a musical thread

CHO
Let me take you down, because I'm going to Strawberry Fields
Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about
Strawberry Fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me

CHO

No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't, you know, tune in but it's all right
That is I think it's not too bad

CHO

Always, no, sometimes think it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think, er, no, I mean, er, yes, but it's all wrong
That is I think I disagree

Thanks Mr Lennon :-)

Steve, if I did it was unconscious just like the colonization of Africa thread was intended to be about the movie Black Panther.

Jackaroo, I was introduced to semantics in grade school. In fact my dog was named Semantic.

In my 20's I saw the evil of cults like Scientology and other religious extremes using hypnosis. As a hypnotist I found practically no one demanded a 'defense against the dark arts'. Everyone was most interested in combating addictions.

People who latched onto a cult were not interested in changing. They felt they had discovered a truth and were unwilling to let go. I used the phrase 'let go', a great deal in hypnotic sessions in those days.

While being the exact opposite of an L Ron Hubbard, I shared a knowledge of hypnosis and an appreciation for science fiction.

The truth of Scientology was awarded with riches but my version of truth was tossed in the garbage. Such is the power of money and lies.

There is a million ways to be, you know that there are you know that there are
