Subject: RE: BS: What do we make of Jordan Peterson? From: michaelr Date: 15 May 18 - 07:18 PM Peterson appears to be lamenting the breakdown of traditional American values. He's not wrong there. The unintended consequences brought on by the internet, social networks, etc. appear to be creating a vast number of unhappy, lost people. I haven't read/watched enough to see what answers he proposes, but I, for one, have no interest in self-help gurus. Others may find him useful. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do we make of Jordan Peterson? From: David Carter (UK) Date: 16 May 18 - 03:58 AM I had never heard of him either. I suspect he makes no impact outside his own country. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do we make of Jordan Peterson? From: Charmion Date: 16 May 18 - 08:57 AM He already has, David Carter (UK). Jordan Peterson is a Canadian psychology professor who teaches at the University of Toronto, and his primary fan base is in the United States. In Canada, he is famous (notorious?) for announcing that he would refuse to use "made-up" (his words) non-gendered pronouns such as "ze", although he had yet to receive any request or directive to do so. His hyper-articulate defence of this position on a PBS talk show provoked a secondary scandal when Lindsay Shepherd, a graduate student at Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Ontario), was punished for screening a clip from it for her tutorial group of freshmen. Their course? "Introduction to Communications Studies". Naturally. Here's a summary of the matter from the Globe and Mail . |
Subject: RE: BS: What do we make of Jordan Peterson? From: Stanron Date: 17 May 18 - 07:43 PM He appears to be doing the rounds of UK TV talk shows right now. As I type I'm watching the repeat of yesterday's Daily Politics on the BBC Parliament channel. He is a guest on this program. I have yet to hear him speak. |
