Our second grade will be starting a study of snow in January. One feature of the unit will be Flat Stanley- child-sized paper cut-outs which the children want to send to different locations all over the world. The recipients would take photos of Flat Stanley in their winter environment- they could dress him, pose him, etc., and then send back to our school, with a letter describing "Stanley's" visit. Many of our children don't know anyone outside of Keene, New Hampshire, so I thought that a few far-flung 'catters might really enjoy this project as "back-up" Stanley destinations.
If you would like a Flat Stanley to come to your place for a short visit, please send a personal message to me with your name and address.
Thanks, and happy winter!
Allison

My daughter's class did a Flat Stanley project... the resultant map was very impressive! Personal message to follow - we'd love to help.

Dani

Allison, I know you're looking for more worldly things, but I'd love to partipate. My two boys could have a good time and their teachers would both love it.

Hi Alison. Darn I thought this was about Lester Flatt or Ralph Stanley.

Alison, I'm sure that our school would be very interested, but I don't really understand the reference to snow. Does a Flat Stanley work in the sub-tropics? School doesn't effectively resume here until the start of February, but maybe we could trade Flat Stanleys or even Skinny Ollies in the New Year. Regards, John

There is a children's book called Flat Stanley, about a boy who was... well... flat. It's become a bit of a tradition in some schools for the children to make a Flat Stanley, or their own likenesses out of paper, and send them to various locations around the globe to cooperative participants who then photograph the paper cut-out in the environment of that locale- some people do just that, others go a little crazy and "dress" the Stanleys in local attire, keep a journal for Stanley, send postcards, or whatever they wish. The minimalist approach is all that's needed, tho' we don't object to the expanded approach!
We've chosen to use Flat Stanley to teach 7-8 year olds about winter around the globe. John, the sub-tropics would be ideal! I'm not looking necessarily for other schools, just kind 'Catters who wouldn't mind taking Stanley in, giving him shelter for a brief time, then sending him back to New Hampshire!
The unit begins Jan. 3, assuming we're able to resume school as usual, so let me know if you're interested!
Merriest of everything!
Allison
P.s. I should add that I'm collecting addresses for the children who don't have addies of their own- so far the response is so great I may not be able to send Stanley to you all! You're all so wonderful! xxxoooxoxoxox
